Breed: Spaniel (Cocker)

Bath Championship Dog Show 31st July 2021 – Spaniel (Cocker) – Judge Richard Morris (Lascoed)

My winners were top draw quality and I was delighted to see my BOB take the Gundog group later at such a young age having won his first CC on the day. It is forty one years since I first judged Cockers at an Open show so this win made judging the breed for the first time at this level even more fulfilling. My thanks to my wonderful stewards.

1. Ellison - Sh Ch Withiflor Rolling Stone JW

Eight year golden of excellent type and quality, beautifully presented, appealing head and expression, good strong bone and firm feet. Muscular neck set into well placed shoulders. Correct gently sloping top line. A typical mature veteran brimming with muscled condition and most worthy of the BV award, congratulations.

2. De Carteret - Bitcon Spy For Derrindee

B/R rising nine years of age, head well balanced though skin slightly loose with aging, pleasing eye colour and shape, ears low set, presented in lovely coat and bloom with attractive feather. Well sprung rib cage, compact build, tail correctly set and carried.

3. Scott - Kalispell Beaspoke JW

Rising eight and a half B/R possessing a more pleasing head for me personally than that of the winner but with aging appeared a little throaty and carrying slightly more body condition than I like to see. Attractive expression, eyes dark brown well set and shaped, good lay of shoulder, correct spring of rib cage with muscled hind quarters and strong second thighs, hocks short and strong, moved well. Three grand veteran dogs.

1. Collier - Pepperbox Back In Time

Eighteen months B/R possessing the most attractive head and expression in the class. Typical cockery appearance, well sprung rib cage, short coupled, the best of fronts with good bone and firm feet. A sturdy and upstanding youngster, full of substance, won the class on the soundness of his movement despite carrying his tail somewhat down.

2. Clifford - Wyncastle's French Quarter Smash with Chamford HJC

Twenty two months B/R with a heavy full muzzle, dark brown eye colour, eyes well set and shaped, correct skull with distinct stop, compact build but I preferred the overall balance of the winner and I considered he moved somewhat close in front on the day. Drove strongly from the hocks with a merry action.

3. Rofe - Villaspaniol Sunny Delight

A compact nineteen months red with attractive outline, muscled neck into well placed shoulders, typical top line, moved with excellent forward reach and rear drive. Tail thick and tapering, well set and carried but did not appear completely settled on the day.

1. Todd & Rahman – Chataway Hijacked

Three and three quarter years B/R, a top draw cocker, brimming with quality and the best of breed type. Stood fore-square all round, upstanding and strong on the hocks. Demonstrated masculine strength throughout but with the essence of the breed in his expression, sturdy build and merry disposition. The most delightful head and expression, muscled neck, excellent forward angulation, straight true front and the best of well padded cat like feet. Correct spring of rib cage, broad, strong across the loins, powerful hind quarters with deep second thighs. An outstandingly sound mover with free flowing forward reach and determined driving rear action. He carried himself beautifully on the move with that additional quality of “star appeal” which is so often illusive. Delighted to award him with his first CC and BOB. He shone in the gundog group and took the top spot convincingly. Congratulations and every wish of a very bright future.

2. Blackley & Salero - Cooleela Operation Dynamo Wightroche

Black four years two months pleasing outline, slight throatiness it seemed presented in solid, mature body condition. Muscled across the loins and short coupled. Attractive dark eye colour, eyes well set and shaped though he did not possess quite the head qualities of the winner nor his forward reach on the day.

1. Craig & Craig - Nicibec Misunderstood JW

Five year nine months B/R sturdy and fully mature with a well proportioned head and delightful breed expression, very well angulated throughout, compact, though needs to carry no more weight in my opinion, well rounded hind quarters, tail well set and carried, coat of excellent silky texture, well presented. Please to award him reserve CC, congratulations.

2. Armstrong - Glenbriar Grand Dezign (Imp Aus)

A younger two year B/R not quite so finished as the winner in body condition of pleasing size, upstanding and well balanced on the best of strong bone and firm feet. Muscled neck into well placed shoulders, correct rib cage and firm sloping top line. Well proportioned with attractive breed expression, hocks set a little back but proved a very sound, steady mover with tail well set and carried straight.

3. Kew – Lujesa Starman at Wylyeview

A quality black, most typical with delightful head and kind expression. Five years and two months with muscled neck, correct top line and lively solid substance on show. The best of muscled hind quarters with deep second thighs, carried his top line well on the move being compact and firm across the loins, driving strongly from the hocks.

2. Davies & Davies – Annaside’s Star Turn

Rising twelve months B/R with a lovely head finish I preferred to that of the winner and an attractive expression, good depth of brisket and correct topline presented in excellent body condition well feathered. Tail well set and carried appeared a bit close behind compared to the winner and not quite her reach and drive showing on the day.

1. Collin & Eyres & Wildman - Oktumi Opalescence

Sixteen months B/R beautifully presented in sturdy body condition compact and well angulated throughout with excellent lay of shoulders and reach of clean neck. Kind intelligent expression would hope her skull fills a little more, firm cat-like feet. Straight and true in front and the best mover in the class with reach and drive on show from short hocks and a merry tail action.

2. Corcoran & Corcoran - Troverothway Analise

Rising seventeen months B/R slightly smaller size than the winner but with more skull head finish though not the fullness of muzzle on show of the first bitch. Correct topline and straight true front, very typical cocker build if somewhat reserved in nature on the day. Good bone and firm feet a very sound mover with excellent drive.

3. Driver & Walker & Driver - Brackenjack Bit Of Allsorts At Beckaby

Fourteen months B/R not yet the head finish of those above her but went soundly on the move carrying her tail correctly and holding a firm topline. Lovely breed expression and character, well sprung ribcage, short coupled and presented in excellent textured coat and feathering.

1. Tavernor - Cachel In The Moonlight At Regaltav

2. Masters & Dott - Manchela Love Heart

Twenty two months O/W not quite the head finish of the winner for me with closer front action but a wonderful bustle and merry spirit on show. Typical topline muscled across the loins well sprung ribcage and body short coupled. Very attractive silky coat and feathering compact build and moving with drive at the rear, not quite the strength of bone of the winner for me.

1. Green & Brian - Cachel Pop The Question To Meloneras JW

Rising three years B/R with a splendid solid front construction and grand sturdy build head well proportioned, ears correctly set strong bone and firm tight feet. Well sprung ribcage short coupled with correct slightly sloping topline lovely muscled hindquarters. The best mover in the class with accuracy and driving power delightfully on show with cocker style.

2. Blackley & Salero - Wightroche Over The Rainbow

Two and a quarter year old black with a body finish I preferred to that of the winner with lovely flanking correct topline, deep muscled second thighs. Well angulated at the shoulder with good reach of neck attractive expression kind with eyes darkly coloured and well set. Stifles well turned and solid hindquarter muscling pleasing tail carriage.

3. De Carteret - Annilann Miss Dynamite With Derrindee

B/R similar age to the second bitch with attractive dark eye colour and shape presenting a pleasing expression, compact construction with correct topline good depth of body though would prefer slightly less spring of ribcage combined with a little less body condition resulting in forward movement which did not quite match that of the winners on the day. Rear action was true with hocks well set.

1. Ellison - Withiflor Fine Romance

Seventeen months black very compact though not on the big side balanced and sturdily built with a solid front well angulated and set, muscled firm loins standing on the best strongly boned legs and padded firm feet in the class. Well constructed throughout lovely proportioned head pleasing soft expression emitted from dark brown well set eyes with distinct stop. Well sprung ribcage moved very soundly tail well set though carried somewhat down on the day.

2. Lundin - Omennes Forever Yours

Rising four years B/R/Tan a bigger bitch than the winner but all proportions correct another attractive well balanced head with correct stop and strength of muzzle good bone and firm feet. Ribcage well sprung strongly muscled hindquarters won her place on super driving movement tail merry well set and carried attractive silky coat and feathering.

3. West - Sheigra Simply A Star JW

Four year old black full of quality and breed type but carrying that little too much body condition for me on the day. Well laid shoulders, compact build good reach of neck. Head nicely balanced with attractive intelligent expression good bone and feet sprung ribcage muscled hindquarters. A sound mover.

LB (5,1)

1. West - Sheigra Stars In Her Eyes JW

Solid sturdy body and build well angulated throughout good depth of body well sprung ribcage loins short coupled. Strong bone and cat-like feet well padded muscled hindquarters short hocks. The best mover in the class straight and true fore and aft with good front extension and rear drive, merry tail action. Lacking slightly in muzzle finish for me but well worthy of the reserve CC on the day, congratulations.

2. Todd & Rahman – Grandtully Gabrielle

Three years four months black typical outline well balanced and compact pleasing head and expression, sturdy build with good depth of body. Strong bone standing on firm well padded feet correct topline and well muscled across the loins. Presented in excellent body condition but I considered a bit lacking in coat in places and slightly sluggish in front movement on the day compared to the winner.

3. McCabe-Bell & McCabe-Bell - Grandtully Eliza Doolittle

Four year old sister I now see to the bitch above a black with typical breed outline attractive head with kind expression correct topline and strong across the loins. Tight firm feet but not quite the strength of bone of the winners. Solid hindquarter muscling tail well set and carried moving steadily though a tad narrow in front action I considered on the day.

OB (6,1)

1. Hillier & Hillier - Coedcernyw Calendar Girl JW

A four year old red looking at her mature best square compact outline clean lines beautifully presented in glorious silky coat and feathering nothing to excess. Neck muscled and well set into shoulders head balanced with melting expression from dark coloured eyes complementary to coat colour good pigmentation. So smart and assured on the move with a merry tail action correctly set and carried striding out around the ring with lovely forward extension and truly determined drive. A top quality presence in the bitch entry and the clear CC winner for me on the day on breed type, soundness and presentation, congratulations.

2. Davies - Kerriglow Honesty JW

Four years four months black notably excels in front construction with excellent fore-chest head well balanced with delightful expression from eyes well coloured set and shaped distinct stop ears correctly placed. Compact appearance well constructed overall with correct topline muscled hindquarters with deep second thighs. Good strong bone and tight feet drove determinedly from short hocks though for me another slight lacking coat finish in places on the day but a lovely breed specimen.

Quality B/R rising four years of age typical breed outline with most appealing head and soft expression correct topline presented in excellent well textured silky coat feather and bloom. Well sprung ribcage with length of ribbing and deep bodied moved soundly in a merry manner. For me not quite the strength of bone of the winners nor turn of stifles.
