GUNDOG SOCIETY OF WALES CH SHOW

October 15th, 2021

POINTERS

I was honoured to be given the chance to judge the breed again at one of my favourite shows. I was thrilled with my entry & I had deliberately not followed the breed since lockdown had ended, to enable me to come to the breed with a fresh eye. Thanks to the Society for this opportunity & particularly thanks to my steward for keeping me in order. Some appeared longer than the balance I wanted and some were shorter on the leg, again affected my thoughts on the proportions of the breed. Only a couple of mouths that were slightly incorrect, so heads looked good.

MPD (2) 1 Siddle’s Wilchrimane Seasalt, what a lovely puppy to start with. This 6 months o/w is so very together with a lovely head & expression, in profile he keeps a lovely head carriage, up & back is has excellent hind movement, good depth of chest for age, this quality boy is balanced & just right for age. BDP & BP, thrilled to hear he went on to BPIS; 2 Preece & Gilding’s Harvestslade Light Of Peace, typical raw baby of 6 months who now needs to slow down & grow steadily to finish what is a promising outline, still as to be expected at present a bit unco-ordinated in movement but very promising for he is well made & has lovely bone & topline. Didn’t like the cold but coped very well with a busy showground. PD (3,1a) 1 Collins’ Collholme Balthasar, masculine head with a kind eye & good proportions, nice neck into a good topline & well set & carried tail, movement still a bit loose but looked the part in profile, needs to finish to complete the picture; 2 Astbury’s Jilony Bobby Ball at Dorbury, good overall balance & again not clean in movement but still very young, good neck & shoulders, masculine head which needs to finish with a nice neck. JD (6) 1 Philo’s Tenshilling It’s My Party for Salmonmist, o/w who is only just out of puppy but he impressed by his lovely clean lines & masculine head & expression, excellent hindquarters & a good depth of chest, in profile covered the ground with ease but hopefully when he is not so excited his tail carriage will drop to complete the look. Moved steadily up & back on well boned legs & feet; 2 Guy & Tuthill’s Cumbrian Night King at Carofel, masculine head & expression with good neck & shoulders, well boned legs & feet, good width to hindquarters, lovely topline & tailset, this smaller b/w just needs to finish for he moved well with good profile movement; 3 Oliver & Stilgoe’s Teisgol Love Is In The Air. YD (5) 1 Weaver’s Dappleline Chance for Anniezu, o/w who needs to now drop into himself as he has a masculine head & expression with a good neck & shoulders, curvy lines which will improve as he relaxes & sets up to advantage, moved well to take this class; 2 T Love Is In The Air, o/w who needs extension in movement to cover the ground with ease for he has good forequarters with well boned legs & feet, good depth of chest & a good topline & tailset, just in the smaller mould to 1 today; 3 Matthews Sonham Black Eyed Pea. ND (3) 1 Martin’s Sunhouse Banged To Rights, balanced masculine b/w dog who played his handler up on the move! Such a masculine head & expression with a good eye & well set ears, good neck & shoulders, lovely flowing lines on his topline to a well set & carried tail. Lovely hindquarters with a good depth of chest, When he wasn’t being silly I could see glimpses of excellent movement & head carriage; 2 T It’s My Party for S; 3 Booth’s Lundgarth Finch. PG (12,3) 1 Wilcox’s Pipeaway Dreams Afyre in Merynjen, such a free, easy mover, this o/w is a good size but not over large, he is balanced with a lovely neck & shoulders, well boned legs & feet, well set & carried tail, head is masculine with a good eye. Lovely type with potential; 2 Booth’s Lundgarth Teal, another o/w masculine dog who is also a free mover & gave 1 a run for his money, lovely head & expression, a nice type of Pointer of a good size, lots to like & particularly good in profile movement with lovely head carriage; 3 Osman’s Fleurfield Firethorn at Marissolo. LD (9,2) 1 Blair’s Twinhoe Vittorio, loved the balance & flowing lines of this o/w boy, lovely neck & head carriage as he covered the ground in profile with ease & assurance on well boned legs & feet, masculine head with a good eye & well set ears, good depth of chest & width of hindquarters, he is quality & really showed his socks off to take the top quality class & RCC; 2 Layton’s Joneva Born To Thrill, yet another quality o/w who on the day just looked slightly longer than 1 which just affected his overall balance, he of course moved so freely & well & showed good Pointer breed points including a masculine head which is balanced, good neck & excellent shoulders, well boned overall legs & good feet, lovely hindquarters, won his place in this excellent class on quality & type; 3 Watkins’ Ansona Aladdin. OD (6) 1 ONeill’s Sh Ch Chesterhope Thrill of Tchase, thrilled to finally have a chance to judge this quality dog in the breed after doing him so well in groups, I was not disappointed, what obviously appeals is his fantastic free movement & easy forward reach with not a sign of any hackney movement, this quality he is passing on to his children. This o/w has a masculine head which is balanced & carried correctly as he covers the ground with ease & purpose. Thank you for letting me see him in breed & although he is now older, he still sets the standard. CC & BOB; 2 Martin’s Sunhouse Chips Ahoy, o/w mature dog with graceful lines which are so easy on the eye, masculine head & expression, moved well keeping up with 1 with no problem, using his well boned legs & feet to drive round the ring with good head carriage, strong neck & lovely forequarters, today slightly off balance but still from the top drawer & handled & showed well to win his place here; 3 Philo’s Fydal Caprio at Salmonmist.
