The Newfoundland Club Championship Show 26/09/21

I thoroughly enjoyed my day despite the later than anticipated start. It is always an honour to judge a breed club show and I want to thank the club for inviting me and every exhibitor who entered and accepted my placings in a sportsman like manner. Both my stewards were excellent and kept the proceedings moving along in a timeous manner.

I had some good quality males and a fantastic choice of top-quality bitches which augurs well for the future of the breed. A few placings could easily change in the future some dogs were definitely tired and disinterested after such a long day which was evident in a lack of enthusiasm on the move.

The Newfoundland based on my interpretation of the breed standard should be a well-balanced dog without exaggeration. Today I found a number dogs with excessive rear angulation and several overweight and lacking any muscle tone. On the plus side mouths and ear set/size have improved since my last judging appointment. The standard of presentation was excellent.

MPD 1st McDonald Newfangled Frute Looney a well grown black with adequate bone he is developing well in body and has a good depth of chest head is promising and clearly masculine with correct eye shape 2nd Steels Nurburgnewf Ironman a tall and he is less developed in head and body than the class winner he has time on his side his movement today was uncoordinated

Both entrants in this class are at a transition stage of development PD 1st Leech Aquatoriya Kelvin Y’Aimiti Spirit TAF black with adequate bone, good length of foreleg and excellent feet his head is promising with really dark eyes topline could be better on the move and I would prefer a longer tail super coat which was well presented 2nd Payne Newettas Lets Party at Squestpaws white and black well marked with minimal ticking coat of correct texture and well presented at the tall and rangy stage his head just needs time his movement was sound, free and coordinated

Two excellent veterans of different type both obviously loved and cherished and in super coat and muscular condition VD 1st Sayle Ch Baranova Top Gallant hard to believe he is a veteran a stylish quality dog and most worthy champion his head has not coarsened with age retaining a kind gentle expression so typical of the breed balanced angulation on the move he was able to cover the large ring with minimal effort 2nd Danson IR/INT Ch Newruff Centurions Army at Alcaro ShCM impressive large black with excellent bone and general substance not quite energy on the move as the first place but he was sound with an excellent topline and tail set

JD 1st McIntyre Shirebears Enchanter for Edbear medium sized black with adequate bone and substance typical head broad skull moderate stop correct eye shape and colour body is still developing in depth and width rather steep in upper arm firm top-line beautifully presented straight double coat I would prefer a longer tail

YD 1st Black Gunnersnewfs Black Desire for Blackcoast large black male of impressive size and substance enviable bone and super large feet very masculine head I would prefer less depth of muzzle and tighter flews balanced angulation fore and rear easy, free and powerful mover excellent topline, tail set and carriage super double coat of correct texture really well muscled 2nd Hietschold Newfangled Playing Coy medium sized black with such a super head and kind gentle expression strong bone and super feet he is well constructed with balanced angulation unfortunately he lost his topline on the move today correct double coat 3rd Hunter Newfangled Fezziwig of Teamstar

PGD 1st Mycock Zentaur Hot Diggity (AI) medium sized with a masculine head correct muzzle to skull ratios strong neck well laid shoulder broad back strong well boned forelegs and large feet he was beautifully presented, conditioned and muscled won this class on his powerful free movement 2nd Chapman Vodahond Prince Charming different head type to the winner I preferred the smaller ears of the winner correct shoulder angulation heavy bone but rather weak in pasterns which clearly affected his front movement well developed body excellent hindquarters which were well-muscled 3rd Cotton Tom’s Tender Moments Vom Burgseeli (IMP NLD)

MLD 1st Crosier Nurburgnewf Cayman a workmanlike black super profile balanced and unexaggerated masculine head broad skull correct width and depth of muzzle good dentition dark expressive eyes strong neck moderate lay to shoulder good topline and tail set moved soundly super coat and condition 2nd Hunter Bridgestone Knokin It Stiff of Teamstar smaller white and black attractive type today he appeared a little out of sorts and did not show well he will have better days

LD 1st Hudson & Bone Newfangled Bone Idle large black adequate bone and substance masculine head small neat ears dark eye full correct dentition correct length of foreleg deep well-developed ribcage broad back rear angulation could be better sound mover if a little close behind well-presented double coat of excellent texture 2nd Hughes Bridgestone Kings North for Bodrhonyn white and black harmonious conformation correct shoulder angulation strong well-muscled hindquarters very fit a free and effortless mover correct straight coat more substance generally would enhance

OD 1st Chapman Merrybear Jenson mature and workmanlike black of ideal size and substance masculine head kind gentle expression strong neck excellent length of foreleg large feet adequate depth of chest broad back good tail set and carriage moved soundly correct double coat 2nd Milburn Gunnersnewfs All About Me at Dawnstarbears quality smaller black with a most attractive static profile nicely proportioned head well angulated shoulder excellent bone and substance large feet strong topline which he retained on the move well-handled and in superb coat and condition

CHD 1st Springthorpe Ch Millthorpe Mr Rochester JW ShCM ShCEx OSW DCC, BBIS & BOB mature medium sized black who was on top form today I last judged him as a puppy and thought him full of potential today he could not be denied the top spot his profile is ideal and on the move his footfall was exceptional masculine head with a or kind gentle expression excellent substance throughout his well-developed body broad back super topline, tail set and croup heavily boned forelimbs with correct large feet he powered round the large ring effortlessness beautifully presented and handled to advantage 2nd Ch Sandbears On The Money JW black in his prime super head with typical gentle expression masculine without any hint of coarseness good depth of chest strong broad back excellent topline and tail set presented to advantage unfortunately today he was not moving freely

SOB 1st Latham Disoranto Diplomat In Morrelham mature black in hard muscular condition attractive head dark eyes correct width of skull short muzzle muscular neck strong topline broad loin balanced angulation excellent reach and drive on the move handled and presented to advantage

SOBR 1st McPhail Spirebear Golden Barley large and fully mature with adequate bone and substance broad skull carrying a little extra weight which affected him on the move beautifully presented 2nd Wilson Sparkybears Tiny Temper tall and rangy adequate bone coat of correct texture and rich colour his movement was erratic today

SOL 1st Groves Bridgestone Loch Lomond (AI) RDCC, BLIS & RBIS eye-catching white and black well marked with minimal ticking impressive profile well balanced without exaggeration masculine head muscular neck strong forelimbs with correct pasterns and large feet level topline his movement is powerful, free and effortless movement beautifully presented and at one with his handler 2nd Payne Newettas Lets Party at Squestpaws see PD

Two absolutely top-quality champion bitches both are soundly constructed but with different head types CB 1st Cameron Ch Nandobears I’M What I’M Camnoire JW ShCM (IMP DEU) I have previously awarded her a rescc a few years ago now in her prime she won this class as I prefer her more feminine head and expression and hard muscular conditioning gave her the edge when moving round the large ring as always beautifully presented and at one with her handler 2nd Mercer IR Ch King Of Helluland Keep Distance at Larkharbour a large black whom I have admired from the ringside many times ideal size, excellent bone and feet soundly constructed moved freely but could not match the winner for power and drive

Lovely class of top-quality bitches all will so much to commend and offer the breed SOB 1st Arkell BCC Camnoire Ghost Kato with Cannark JW a smaller black but this did not detract from her quality, type and construction today she was on sparking form and could not be denied the top award beautiful balanced and feminine head correct dentition strong neck harmonious angulation well boned limbs super large feet excellent topline and tail set strong loin her movement was light and effortless beautifully presented 2nd Baldock Ch Gunnersnewf All Or Nothing JW larger black with a feminine head dark eye and gentle expression excellent bone and substance super depth of chest well sprung ribs correct tail carriage and set sound powerful movement presented and handled to advantage 3rd Farrar Disoranto Juliana Blue at Darkpeak JW (IMP Pol)
