British Bulldog Club

It was a real honour and pleasure to judge the British Bulldog Club’s championship show and special thanks to the Secretary, Commitee and expert ring Stewards for making the show run smoothly. 

Although I had done this abroad it was the first time in the UK in bulldogs that a student judge had graced the ring and I can honestly say it worked very well. I had the pleasure of working with Mrs Emma Lee and I am sure she enjoyed the chance to go over such quality dogs. It didn’t interfere with my judging procedure at all and the feedback I have received has been all positive so let’s hope other clubs and judges will continue with it.

For the current climate, I had a great entry with a lot of the top dogs in Europe present and the quality of my open classes was exceptional. My open dog class especially excelled in quality and was with out doubt the best class I have seen since the last Crufts and I would go as far as to say that every one of them could be a cc winner. I purposely went out to judge for type as I genuinely believe this country is lacking true type and perhaps so much emphasis has been put on health and pendulum like front movement some have forgotten about the importance of other characteristics of the breed. Yes, a dog should be healthy but not at the expense of type. A dog can be very healthy and still meet the current standard and this was made apparent by my first five placings as all were foreign dogs but notably most with English bloodlines in them ! This tells me that we have the ingredients here in the UK to produce quality but perhaps lack or choose to ignore the knowledge and tools available. More attention to jaws especially width as many narrow and spooned and also top lines need addressing. In profile a bulldog should be a compilation of curves and I tried to reward as many of these exhibits as possible and was very pleased with my main winners - all portraying excellent breed type.

Rounded cheeks, overall a good expression, square front, strong bone with neat feet, enough brisket for age, nice body shape, good topline, excellent rib, free moving tail, good hindquarters. Moved well. 

2. Rudd’s MYEISHA DESTINED TO BE NEWS, 6 month standard size r & w, clean head with enough wrinkle, good sound dark eyes, good depth of stop, wide nose with open nostrils. Good turn of true underjaw, nice expression

Good tacked on front, good turn of shoulder, nice rib, straight bone, neat feet, good body shape, nice topline, free moving tail, good angulation just a little unruly today.

3.Steele’s CHAYO WHITE KNIGHT AT CHELSEAPRIDE

Puppy Dog

1. George’s AVAWORD DEXTER, standard red 8month, good head with a flat skull, nicely placed thin rose ears, sound dark eyes, excellent wide open nostrils, good width of true jaw, rounded cheek, all giving a good expression. Good spring of rib. Good square front, strong bone, neat feet. Nice profile enough neck. Tail not this dogs virtue but still enough quality to win the class, moved well

2. Nash’s SMOOCHABULL HE GOT GAME, Brindle&white standard size male, clean headed dog with a long flat skull, nice thin rose ears, good sound dark eyes, good turn of true under jaw, tacked on shoulders, deep brisket, good ribs, strong bone, neat feet, good top line with a nice reach of neck, well set good tail. Good rear angulation. Little shy today.

Junior Dog

-1. Stothard’s BRUNO AT CARRNAZE BRIGHT, red, long flat skull, good turn of true under jaw, nice round sound eyes, neat rose ears, good depth and width of fore face, front a little wide but square enough, strong bone and neat feet. Nice top line with a lovely reach of neck, short backed, good ribs, nice angulation, free moving tail, moves very well.

2, Eaton’s RICATORI ULTRA EGO, Red and white standard size with a nice head, flat skull, well defined and deep stop, open nostrils on a large nose, good turn of under jaw, rounded cheeks, giving a nice expression. Little tighter in front than 1, straight bone, neat feet, good reach of neck, nice free moving tail, good angulation, moved well.

3.Simpson’s PLEATS PLATINUM EDITION

Novice Dog

1. Cunningham’s SARRIENNA GYPSY KING, R&w, good broad flat skull, neat rose ears, good length from ear to eye, well spaced clear dark eyes, good width of fore face, good broad nose with open nostrils. Good turn of true jaw, nice tacked on front, good strong bone to neat feet. Good short back, Nice reach of neck, excellent ribs, nice top line, free moving tail, good turn of stifle, moved soundly.

2. Brooks’ MIGHTY KING ARTHUR, White, good broad flat skull. Good dark eyes, neat rose ears, large black nose. Good turn of underjaw but not as wide as 1. good ribs, strong bone, neat feet. Good length of back, good rear angulation moved well.

Undergraduate Dog

 1. Ironmonger’s BRITANIC LUCKY LUKE, r&w flashy male, nice clean head with enough wrinkle, flat skull, neat rose ears, rounded cheeks, clear eyes, large black nose with open nostrils, good turn and width of true under jaw, good front with a nice turn of shoulder, enough brisket. Good top line with a lovely reach of neck, good tail , good angulation moved exceptionally well.

Post graduate

1.Morley & Winfield’s MYSTIC POWER OF JASON AT ALANABULL, r&w standard male, pleasing head witha flat broad skull, well placed rose ears, fine wrinkle, good depth of stop, well spaced dark eyes, good turn of true under jaw, little short in neck but a good length of back, good ribs, nice light back end, moved very well

2.Stead’s CHEZZASBULLYS MOUNTBATTEN . Red, clean cut dog, good clear dark eyes, flat skull neat rose ears, good turn of true under jaw, good width of fore face, strong bone to neat feet, just enough brisket, good reach of neck to a nice top line, healthy tail, good rear angulation moved very well.

1. Livingstone’s JACOBELLA CAPTAIN FLINT, Red and white larger dog but well balanced, lovely brick shaped head, excellent flat skull, neat rose ears well placed on the skull, nice fore face, good turn of true under jaw, round sound eyes, excellent front, correct shoulders, strong bone, neat feet. Nice profile with an excellent reach of neck, a nice topline, good straight tail very well set, moved very well.

2. Murphy’s WEMBOLT SIMPLY RED r&w more standard size than 1, with a good broad flat skull, neat rose ears, clear dark eyes, good width of under jaw, nice front strong bone, good short back, nice ribs, nice light hindquarters. Sound but a bit reluctant on the move. Won his placing on type.

Rey’s FAT PUPPYS YOUVE THE POWER, Just what I was looking for - outstanding white male of great type, in excellent condition, well balanced throughout, broad flat long skull, neat rose ears, nice round dark eyes, good depth of stop, excellent large black nose with open nostrils, good broad fore face, good turn of true under jaw and rounded cheeks creating an excellent expression with the darkest of pigment. Good turn of shoulder. Strong straight bone to neat feet, good ribs, good brisket . Superb in profile, lovely reach of neck, excellent top line nicely curved over the loin to a free tail correctly set, lovely turn of stifle and nice pronounced hocks creating good angulation. An all round lovely dog who is a worthy champion in great condition please to award RCC and RBIS

Nice tacked on shoulder, straight bone to neat feet. Good profile with a good reach of neck well ribbed, good rear angulation, free tail. Well handled and moved well.

Strong hindquarters excellent turn of stifle, well pronounced hocks, moved well.

Excellent pigmentation, large black nose with open nostrils, true wide under jaw, nice shoulders, straight bone, neat feet, good reach of neck, nice top line, light hindquarters, excellent turn of stifle, well pronounced hocks, moved well.

Lovely front good turn of shoulder to good straight bone and neat feet, nice brisket, Super profile, good reach off neck. Correct length of back. Excellent ribs, well placed free tail.
