Finnish Lapphunds – Judge Karen Anderson

Thank you to the Southern Counties Committee for inviting me to be the replacement judge and the exhibitors for being so gracious with the change. Thanks to my two lovely stewards who kept the ring running smoothly. Temperaments were excellent throughout and although some exhibits were very lively on the day, it just brought out the character of this breed which I know and love. Bites were good in all exhibits. There was a variance of type, size and bone. Seems light bone is increasing in the breed which is not called for in the standard. Some dogs were upright in shoulder and too many lacked the length of upper arm to complete the front construction to give correct front movement. Something to be kept in mind.

Junior Dog 0 entries

Postgraduate dog (8,0abs)

1st Lee’s Kaijartuu Ihmissusi JW. 2 Year old Black W/S. Larger size male and a touch long when viewing from the side. Handsome boy and the cleanest mover in this class. Head still maturing would like more fullness to skull and a broader muzzle. Clean stop and rounded skull. Ears of medium size with good covering. Nice reach of neck. Good lay of shoulder. Would like a bit more length to upper arm. Ample width to chest when viewed from front. Touch long in rib but firm topline. Nice angulation to rear with moderate turn of stifle. Ok all round for bone. Correct tail set. Harsh top coat and plenty of undercoat. Good furnishings to rear and legs. Moved well in all directions with drive and a nice gait keeping a firm topline. Very responsive to his handler.

2nd Samuel’s Oberitz Buoremus 19 month B/Tr. Liked this boy but was very unsettled at first. Gives a balanced view from every angle and has plenty of bone throughout. Lovely head of nice proportions, just needs to broaden out in muzzle a little more. Lovely dark eye and dark pigment. Ears set well and covered. Enough neck. Balanced front and aft with moderate angulation. Nice length of rib, touch long in loin, making him slightly long in body. Feet were well covered and arched. Coat was blowing slightly, but harsh enough with plenty of undercoat. Good furnishings to legs and a plume of a tail. Once settled he moved out well although slightly untidy behind. This improved the more he moved and settled down but it cost him the 1st.

3rd Forsey’s Arianrhod Black Sun Aeon at Muzoku.

Limit Dog (8,0abs)

1st Manley’s Skimarque Talvi Susi – 3 year old Black W/S. Lovely male with good bone all through. Good body depth to leg ratio and slightly longer in length making the right outline. The most beautiful appealing head, full width to muzzle, clean stop and rounded skull, Ears set wide apart, small and of nice shape with good covering. He has such a lovely expression with a dark brown oval eye. Strong neck of good length onto moderate layed shoulder. Good upper arm and strong pastern. Tight oval feet which were well covered. Correct length of back with rounded rib and enough loin. Moderate angles to the rear on low hock. Well coated with dense undercoat with the correct harsh texture to top coat. Lovely, overall shape to him. On the move he was hindered at times, but I saw enough of him once settled. Moved with brisk action and balanced throughout. Please to give him the RCC. RDCC

2nd Critchlow and Sheridan’s Pavoskas Charleston JW – 3 year old Brown W/S. Liked this boy for type. Balanced shape. Head of good proportions, good width to skull. Brown eyes which complimented with his coat. Widely set medium ear. Good pigment throughout. Would like a little more length of neck. Clean front with a good depth of chest. Slightly upright in shoulder. Firm body shape with moderate spring of rib. Moderate angulation to rear on strong low hock. Presented in lovely condition with good bone. Carrying a good coat of nice texture with abundant mane to neck and thick furnishings to legs. On the move, close behind at times, he moved out well in side profile but seemed to favour at leg at times. This didn’t seem to effect his topline.

3rd Woollard’s Infindigo Lintu Miika.

Open Dog (8, 1w/d)

1st – Short’s CH Glenchess Gregory 5 year old Black tri. This boy just oozes quality. Standing back looking at him, he is so pleasing to the eye in balance and proportions. He has the most beautiful expression with his dark brown eyes. Clean head of correct proportions. Small well covered ears. His front construction is excellent, moderate lay back of shoulder, onto correct upper arm and strong slightly sloping pastern. Good width and depth of chest. Clean and well covered feet. Strong back with good spring of rib. Correct length to height balance He was presented in lovely condition with full jacket of harsh top coat supported by an ample undercoat. Movement wise he is so clean in all directions and just floats round the ring. Extends well at the front and parallel when viewed on the up and down. Impressive side gait keeping a level topline all the way round. DCC.

2nd Thomas’ CH Elbereth Tuulenpoika JW 3 year old B/Tri. Another lovely dog. Taller and longer in body than my winner but nicely balanced throughout. Carrying good bone and in lovely all round condition with excellent muscling to rear. Appealing head of good shape with oval dark eye and pigmentation. Defined stop and lovely width of skull. Good reach of neck onto correct front construction with good length of upper arm. Feet arched and of oval shape with good covering. Firm body with spring of rib. Moderate angulation to stifle and strong hock. Coat of correct type and texture and of good length. Moves well in all directions, covering the ground well. A little untidy on rear movement at times going round the ring.

3rd Samuel’s Oberitz Upponalle.

Special Beginners (2,0abs)

1st Rudd’s Infindigo Lintu Henkka. 3 year old Wolf Sable. Reserve in the limit class but he settled a lot more in this class to show himself off. Such lovely type with plenty of bone. Balanced throughout, again a little longer in the body. Lovely headpiece with defined stop and medium well covered ear, set wide apart. Eyes of good shape, would prefer a little darker. Strong neck onto moderate lay back of shoulder. This boy is built well with excellent angulation front and back. Coat of good texture with abundant furnishings to finish the picture. Moves well with drive and in this class very tidy from all angles. Delighted to hear afterwards that this boy won Group 4 in the Special Beginners group. SPB.

2nd Sisley-Smith’ Tabanyaruu Qtamo Onni. 4 year old B/Tr. Larger size dog whose handler gets the best out of. Excellent presentation. He’s a little long in body and taller in leg than I would prefer, but is balanced in his angulation. Head of nice shape, touch longer in muzzle to skull and needs a bit more width overall. Well covered ears which were used well. Eye lighter brown which spoils his expression slightly but good dark surrounding pigmentation. Short in neck. Presented in good coat which had the texture I was looking for. Plenty of undercoat. Moves out well and looks nice in side profile. A tad close behind moving away.

Veteran (5,0abs)

1st Meikle and Henderson’s CH Marymead Muskateer ShCM. 9 and half year old Brown W/S male. Rather out of coat today but meant nothing was hidden. This boy has a lovely shape. Nothing is overdone with him, just a pleasing outline which shows balance from all angles. Head piece of lovely proportions and width. Eye colour harmonising with coat and good pigmentation. Strong neck of good length. Depth of chest and generous width throughout. Correct lay of shoulder, ample upper arm on sloping pastern. Feet were tight and well covered. Moderate rear angulations and strong bone throughout. Moved well in all directions with active brisk action. Lovely boy. BV

2nd Treasure’s Infindigo Riemu Emmi ShCM VW. 9 year old Wolf Sable bitch. This girl looked like she could go all day and unlucky to meet winner on the day. For all round condition she was the best in this class. Toned and muscled throughout. Ok for bone. Head shape of nice proportions, would like a bit more width to muzzle and a darker eye. Well covered medium ear. Slightly longer in the body but clean construction with correct lengths and angulations. The right width and depth of chest. Moderate spring to rib. Presented in good coat with the top harshness required. Plenty of undercoat. On the move, she extends out well and presents a lovely side gait. Clean and parallel at the front. Can be a touch close behind at times. Very in one with her handler.

3rd Lock’s Bridus Pikkumimmi JW

Good Citizen Dog Scheme (3,1w/d)

1st Bright’s Thistleglen Fred. 6 year Brown male. Nice shape to this boy. Just would like more of him all over but good throughout with bone. Head has good width to skull. Would like more width to muzzle and a stronger stop. Slightly heavy in ear. Eye of correct colour matching his coat. Strong neck. Angulations front and back are ok. He has the right depth of chest to just above elbow and width throughout. Would prefer a bit more length to upper arm. Coat of good texture, would like more furnishings to rear and legs. Tight oval feet, well covered. On the move he has clean paces from all angles but seems a little lethargic and needs to speed up to fully extend the gait to enable the reach and drive from behind.

2nd Proctor’s IR CH Bridus Ihana with Cathbri ShCM. 8 Year old B/T bitch. Head of nice proportions with good width of skull, defined stop and good length of muzzle. Dark brown eye. Good length of neck, shoulder slightly upright and a touch short in upper arm. Good depth and width of chest. She has plenty of bone throughout, moderate rear angulations and strong short hock. Nice body/leg ratio but touch long in rib. Coat has good harshness with soft undercoat. Today, her movement let her down. Seemed unsettled so her front was a little erratic and very close behind at rear moving away.

Special Beginners Bitch (1,0abs)

1st Sisley-Smith’s Tabanyaruu Wihta Kuu Lapsi (AI) 22 month cream. This little girl has such a lovely shape about her when viewed from side. Nice headpiece with dark brown, oval eye setting it off, giving such a lovely expression. Small, covered ear completing the picture. A little light in bone throughout. Front construction is good but needs a little more depth of chest. but she’s still young. Nice body proportions, slightly flat sided in rib. Rear of moderate angulation with good turn of stifle and low hock. Coat was on the change but could feel some harshness. Moves well in each direction, could do with a little more front extension. Parallel when viewed from front and rear.

Puppy Bitch (1,1w/d)

Junior Bitch (3, 0abs)

1st Jackson’s Elbereth Huurrehuntu. 12 month old Black W/S. Presents a nice balanced shape when standing. Head of nice proportions for age. Just needs to broaden and fill out which will come in time. Clean scissor bite. Dark brown oval eye. Needs to grow into her ears, but of nice set. Well off for neck into moderate shoulder. Front angulations are good, Chest still needs to come on in depth but where I’d expect for her age. Nice body length and rear angulation. Would like a little more bone throughout. Well off for coat with correct textures. Handler got the best out of her on the move as she was a little live wire but eventually settled into her paces. Brisk movement and clean paces from all directions. A bright future I’m sure.

2nd Woollard’s Infindigo Onnekas Kielo. 16 month D. Pretty head, broad in skull and good width length of muzzle. Defined stop and clean rounding of skull. Ears a little large and too highly set. Good reach of neck. Shoulders are slightly upright but good length of upper arm. Tight oval feet. Ok for bone throughout. Little long in body but good spring of rib. Would like a little more rear angulation to stifle. Coat was on the change and lacked the amount of undercoat normally desired. Top coat was a touch soft. Moved cleanly front and side. A little untidy behind.

3rd Clark’s Lumikoira Sanaleikki Kassi.

Post Graduate Bitch (8, 1abs)

1st Robinson’s Tappekko Aamuaurinko. 2 year old Brown W/S. Liked this girl for type. Head of nice shape, just needs to mature and fill out. Eyes complimenting coat of oval shape. Good pigmentation. Has a lovely expression to her. Ears set correctly of good size and shape. Ample neck. Nice front construction, just a little flat in chest at the moment but good depth. Correct length of rib and loin and balanced at rear. Ok for bone throughout. Coat was of nice condition, just needs a fuller undercoat. On the move she took a while to settle into her pace, but once there, she is clean and extends well creating a lovely side profile. Did eventually raise and put her tail over her back to complete the picture. Sadly not so in the Open class which cost her a place.

2nd Arianrhod Hallatar. 21 months B/T. Such a lovely youngster of good shape and type. Gives an all round balanced view from all directions. Head developing well with good ratios of skull and muzzle. Dark brown eye, medium ear set correctly. Has a lovely expression. She has good front and rear angulations with good bone throughout. Short hock to rear. Depth of chest and good width front and back. Her coat was in lovely condition and of good length. On the move she has a good brisk action and tidy in all directions. Extends well and drives well from behind. Very promising.

3rd Smith’s Rajarani Christmas Rose.

Limit Bitch (6,1bs)

1st Critchlow’s Pavoskas Ceili JW. 4 year old W/S. Very striking girl. Loved her for her overall shape and type. Presented in excellent coat and condition and has a lovely outline. She has good bone throughout and excellent tone and muscle. Such a pleasing head, full with good width and depth to skull and muzzle, defined stop. Dark eye and small well shaped ear. She has such a beautiful expression. Strong neck onto good lay of shoulder. She has ample upper arm down onto strong pastern. Oval feet which were well furnished. Body shape I was looking for with strong topline, enough spring of rib and length of loin. Good rear angulation to stifle, sat on low strong hock. Once focussed into her stride she has a brisk gait. Clean and parallel on the front and drove well from the rear. In the challenge, she took it up another gear and excelled on the move and couldn’t be denied the CC. This was her 2nd and I was delighted to see her gain her crowning CC at the Club show later that day. BCC. BOB

2nd MacVicor Collingwood’s Elbereth Lumenlumo JW. 3 year old cream. Another lovely bitch I liked for type. She has an outstanding, balanced outline when viewed from the side. Coat on the change but the texture I was looking for was there. Everything is in proportion with this girl. I would just like a bit more of her but she more than meets the standard. Good head proportions and with her dark oval eye and dark pigmentation along with her small well shaped ear, she has such a gorgeous expression, so pretty. Good depth of chest and enough width throughout. Moderate lay of shoulder, good length of back. Nice front and rear angulation. Ok for bone. Correct tail set. Full tail of good length. Lovely little mover in all directions with clean paces. Tail carried well over back.

3rd Manley’s Rajarani Winter Rose.

Open Bitch (5,1w/d)

1st Critchlow’s Pavoskas Disco JW. 3 year old Black W/S. Larger size bitch, full of quality. Has a good side profile, slightly longer cast in body. Head of lovely proportions. Clean scissor bite. Good breadth of skull, muzzle full with enough padding, defined stop. Dark oval eye. Ears set wide apart of good size and shape. Appealing expression. Strongly made all round with good bone. Good depth of chest with enough width. Balanced in front and rear angulations. Presented in good coat, with ample furnishings to rear, legs and feet. A very tidy mover in all directions, straight on the up and down and had a nice side gait and lift to her. Would just prefer a little more drive from her. RBCC

2nd Forsey’s Pikkuihme Kuukivi at Muzoku. 3 year old B/Tri. A bitch that needs to be gone over due to her excessive coat which spoils her overall outline on first impressions. Head of nice shape and enough length to muzzle. Dark oval eye. Small ear but set too far to side of head. Good reach of neck. Her shoulder is slightly upright and would prefer a bit more upper arm to front construction. Has a good depth of chest and good width throughout. Body shape is sound with spring of rib and enough loin length. Ok for bone. Top coat was hard to assess as she seemed covered in some sort of product which left her coat feeling crisp and brittle. Enough dense undercoat. Moved out nicely at front and side gait was ok but very close behind when moving away and around the ring.

3rd Robinson’s Tappekko Aamuaurinko.
