I am most grateful to the committee of Blackpool Championship Show for the kind invitation to judge Labrador Retrievers with CC’s for the first time, a breed I have loved and owned for many years. Many thanks to my very able and efficient stewards Geoff Corish & Susan Lanson, your help is most appreciated. A huge thank you must go to the exhibitors for the super quality entry. It was such a shame that the weather was against us, having to move into the tent after a couple of classes. Thank you, to you all for your patience and understanding whilst trying to give everyone room to move their dogs.

1ST BALLADOOLE SKY FALL (MISS K DRUGGAN)

A lovely black babe at just 6 months of age, such a happy and outgoing boy. Liked his overall size and substance, as he has strength but not overdone. Head is needing to break, but with good width to the backskull, and depth to the muzzle. He has a good length of neck, but with a little more dewlap than my ideal. Good flow to his topline, with a good spring to the ribcage and depth to the brisket. Stands on well boned limbs. Moving out with good drive from the rear, all just needing to tighten as you would expect. Shown in good coat.

2ND HARROP PICK POCKET (MS POTTER)

Compact 8 month old black dog. In profile he stands foresquare and moderate all through, with good substance to the body. Preferred his head, it is clean cut and masculine with a lovely dark eye giving a kind expression. Moderate in neck, at the moment standing a little bum high and a little too proud of his tail. Super barrel ribcage, and depth of brisket. Shown in good coat and moves with purpose.

1ST CARPENNY PADDY AT ROCKLEDGE (MR E & MRS A MORLEY)

Promising 11 month old black dog. A proud and upstanding youngster who shows himself off well. He has a clean, sturdy and shapely outline when stood. Liked the balanced to his head, showing good length to the foreface, well placed ears, perhaps like a fraction more stop, with a well shaped eye. Muscular neck of good length flowing smoothly into a firm level topline. His body is deep in brisket and with a good barrel rib. A free and positive mover

2ND BRUADARACH BRAENUTH TAF (C M SMITH)

Such a sweet 6 month old chocolate dog, giving a lot away in this class, but with so much to like. Doing an impression of ‘tigger’ at times, but that was most endearing. Not the maturity of the winner as yet, liked his overall shape and type. He has such a keen and alert expression, so attentive to his handler. Clean neck, well placed shoulders, enough depth and spring for age. Moving out very well, with good width behind and true

1ST BALLADOOLE CAPTAIN TOM (MISS K DRUGGAN)

Much to admire on this 15 month old pale yellow dog. He has a natural presence about him, with strength all through and a lovely flow to his topline. When stood he is well proportioned, with a good length of leg. Masculine head, with strength and length to the foreface, lovely dark eye with an alert and kind expression. His clean muscular neck fits neatly into well placed shoulders, deep in brisket and with a good barrel ribcage. Width to the thighs and a nice sweep of stifle. Shown in good coat. On the move positive and true

2ND LANCASTRIA AXEL (AI) (MRS M D'ARCY)

Compactly built 17 month old black dog. Showing his kindly nature by showering me with kisses! Thought he had a handsome head, clean cut, with a broad backskull, good length to the foreface, and lovely dark expressive eyes. Strong and deep in the body, and short coupled. Not quite the width of thigh of winner, short hock to heel. In good coat and condition. Moving out purposefully.

1ST WYNFAUL WINDRUSH (MRS M A PERCIVAL)

Pleasing 18 month old black dog. An honest and workmanlike, with nothing overdone but showing good substance all through. On the stack has a nice flow to him. Kind head with soft and gentle expression from those dark eyes. Chest let down to the elbow, and a good ribcage. Firm and level back, and short coupled, well angulated hindquarters. Shows good drive in profile, would like him a little tidier in front, moving at one with his handler.

2ND LINJOR WINTER FROST (MRS L HARVEY MAJOR)

21 month old darker yellow dog. Such a kind and gentle expression on this boy, lovely dark eyes and pigmentation. He has balanced overall body proportions, with a good length of neck, deep in the body, but the topline was a little soft today which spoilt the outline, good width of thigh, strong and muscular. Moved out with drive.

1ST ANTONINE ABERCROMBIE (MR R & MRS C WILKINSON)

well made 2 year old black dog. Not a flashy dog, but everything as it should be. He has a balanced head piece, with strength to the foreface, and well shaped dark eyes. Lovely depth to the brisket and development of forechest, correct barrel shape to the ribs. Held a firm topline both stood and on the move. Nicely angulated hindquarters which he put to good use on the move, showing positive footfalls.

2ND MEADOVILLABS BLACK ONYX (MR P & MRS T MCCRORY)

Proud and Shapely outline to this 3 year old black dog, who was very close up to winner, just splitting hairs, but today preferring the precision of the rear movement of winner. Another with a kind and gentle expression. Pleasing length of neck, deep in the body, short coupled and strong hindquarters. Showed lovely movement in profile, driving from the rear

Clean and Smart outline on this 2 year old yellow dog. Liked his overall balance and proportions, as he has a good length of leg and harmonious angles. Having strength to the head, but not overdone, lovely kind dark eye and well placed ears. Nice straight well boned forelegs onto tight feet. Firm level topline, good ribbing and depth. Strong rear showing width to the thigh. Lovely profile movement, a little untidy behind, clean and tight in front.

Happy and outgoing 2 year old mid yellow dog of good type. A pleasing profile and standing foresquare. Well shaped head, and gentle dark eye. Strong neck, well developed forechest, a little tied in at the elbow, lovely barrel rib, firm level topline, strong hindquarters which he put to good use on the move. Shown in good coat

This 3 year old chocolate dog is a real eye catcher, just loved him. He looks an absolute picture on the stack, so balanced and unexaggerated. Thought him to be very typical and sound in construction and type. Having a shapely silhouette and harmonious proportions. Masculine head with good width to the backskull and length and strength to the foreface, eye toning well with the coat colour. Clean, strong and muscular neck flowing smoothly into a firm and well held topline. He has super depth and forechest, the ribs are very well sprung with no excess body weight as he is fit and muscular all through. Strong hindquarters with a good width of thigh and short hock to heel. Shown with a good coat and in lovely condition. On the move he is so positive and true. Wish I had another CC to award, but alias I did not RDCC

3 year old yellow dog with a lovely clean outline, nothing overdone and carrying the right amount of weight. He has a really pleasing outline when stood, honest and workmanlike. Masculine and typical head, so well balanced and in no way coarse. Well placed ears, kind dark eyes, good stop, and strength to the muzzle. He is clean and straight in front well boned limbs onto compact feet. The body is well developed, with well sprung ribs and strong loin. Not quite the hindquarters of the winner. Presented in good coat and condition. He has a lovely ground covering action

This 4 year old yellow dog has a real zest for life and enjoys every minute. Showing all the virtues of a top quality dog. Loved his size, substance and masculinity. He has the desired strength, without excess body. When stacked has lovely body lines. Has such an endearing expression. Strong muscular neck, deep in the brisket and well developed in front. His topline just flows from nose to his well set on and carried otter tail. His angulation is complimentary both fore and aft. Coat dense and of good texture. Powerful mover, with reach and drive.

3 year old slightly smaller framed and compact chocolate dog. He has a pleasing outline, balanced and with strength all through. Appealing head, with the eye colour toning well with the coat, alert to his handler. Liked his strong muscular neck which was clean and flowed well into a firm topline. Well boned limbs and compact feet. Well ribbed reaching down to the elbow. Not quite the width of thigh of winner. Well let down hocks. Coat of good texture. Moving out soundly, a little proud of his tail

Cracking 3 year old darker yellow dog. He is quite the charmer and shows himself off with confidence. Top end for size for me, but oh so lovely to go over, everything is in the right place and flows beautifully. When stood he portrays an image of strength, alertness and agility. His profile is balanced and unexaggerated, standing foresquare with an ever wagging tail. Thought him to be so expressive, using his ears and dark eyes to great effect, one minute giving an intelligent look the next being a muppet! He has a seamless flow from nose to tail, with his strong clean neck, lovely straight front and well boned limbs onto tight feet. Brisket reaching down to elbow, well sprung ribs with good development of forechest. Level and firm back, short loin leading to a strong well muscled rear. Liked his hindquarters which have a lovely width of thigh, well bent stifle and short hock to heel. Shown with a lovely double coat in full bloom. A powerful mover, showing enthusiasm and pizzazz, and being true in all directions. Looked a treat in the group, delighted to see him shortlisted – DCC & BOB

Slightly smaller framed then winner this 5 year old yellow dog certainly knows how to show himself off. Keen, alert and full of beans. Quality dog who stands foresquare, having totally unexaggerated symmetry. Handsome, proportionate and masculine head, with the kindest of expressions. Strength in his neck which is of good length and flows into a firm and well held topline. He is deep in the brisket and with a good spring to the ribcage. Liked his strong muscular quarters, showing a good width of thigh and well turned stifle. Free flowing movement

Upstanding and compact mid yellow dog coming up 9 years of age, and what super condition he is in. Looking a picture on the stack and belying his years. Strong and compact body in super muscle tone. He has such an endearing expression, kind and intelligent. Lovely strong clean neck of good length which flows seamlessly into a firm level topline. Deep in the ribcage, well boned limbs, and super strong and wide hindquarters. He covers the ground effortlessly in his side gait, lost out on BV as not quite as clean in his front action. Another super dog, 8 year old black dog, with so much to like. Of a different stamp to winner, slightly long in body, but still well balanced and masculine all through. Strong neck, deep in brisket and a good ribcage, holding a firm topline to his well set on and carried otter tail. Nicely boned limbs and tight feet. Moving with reach and drive

Her head is very pretty, well shaped and balanced, the dark pigmentation setting off the dark gentle eyes. She has enough depth and rib for her age. Nicely boned and with compact feet. At times standing a little bum high, but that is expected at this age. Good width to her rear. Moving with good reach and drive, just needing to tighten up behind

Loved her head, so feminine, with good width to the backskull, and clean cut, with a well balanced foreface. But those dark eyes, giving such a melting expression. Her clean neck of good length flows into well placed shoulders. Deep in the ribcage with a good spring. Holds a firm topline both stood and on the move. Well angulated hind quarters, which were put to good use showing drive in profile movement. Clean and tidy in front but needing to tighten a little more behind. This 2 year old pale yellow bitch has a lovely outline when stood, proud and keen, showing herself off to advantage. Thought she had lovely body lines, giving her a clean and shapely profile. Neck flowing cleanly into a firm level topline and well set on tail, but tended to fly when on the move. Lovely depth and rib. Wide and well developed thighs. She has the desired substance and yet fit, agile and active, in fact at times a little to active! Her profile is smart, balanced and compact. Liked the flow to her topline, seamless from nose to tail. She has such a lovely feminine head and expression. Good width to the backskull with length and strength to the muzzle, dark soulful eyes. Her clean neck of good length flowing into well placed shoulders, with her legs well under the body. Good development of forechest. Standing on well boned limbs and neat feet. A strong and compact 3 year old chocolate bitch, one who is very self assured and loving life. She has the desired substance yet is still feminine and shown it fit condition. Not a big girl but so balance and in proportion and has lovely breed type. Well proportioned head, with a good toning eye colour, strength to the backskull and length to the foreface. Her strong and muscular neck smoothly flowing into a firm, level topline with the tail coming right off the back which is constantly in use! Deep in the body with the desired spring to the ribcage, short strong loin and well boned limbs. She has an excellent side gait, a fraction close behind. Super coat and condition.

Close up to winner, a very honest and typey 5 year old black bitch. She is of a lovely size, with clean lines and good substance. Everything is in proportion and flowing smoothly from one part to the next. She has such a gentle and kind expression, and a real will to please. Liked her front assembly, well balanced from her strong neck, deep brisket, well developed forechest and forelegs well under her. Holding a firm topline and a well carried otter tail. Moving out well, today just preferring the drive of winner but splitting hairs

Her firm topline flows seamlessly into a well set on and carried otter tail. Well boned limbs and tight feet. An honest, no nonsense workmanlike 5 year old black bitch. Thought her just lovely. She is shapely and has lovely substance all through but not carrying any excess weight. Liked her size, substance, and femininity. Oozing breed type to her unexaggerated and balanced outline. She has the most feminine of heads, which has good proportions of backskull and foreface, lovely dark expressive eyes. Good length of neck, clean and muscular. Liked her depth, with a lovely spring to the ribcage and development of forechest, well boned limbs and neat tight feet. She holds her topline when stood and on the move, and carries her tail straight off the back. Shown is a good coat and moving out so accurately with precise footfall both fore and aft. Delighted to award her the BCC (Advised that this is her 3rd making her a Full Champion – many congratulations)

Just loved the shape, balance, and size of this 3 year old pale yellow bitch when stacked. She has a good length of leg and the desired amount of substance that screams quality Labrador. Losing out today as not as collected on the move behind as winners, but still loved her. Feminine clean cut head, with good width to the backskull, with length and strength to the muzzle, Kind toning eye. Strong neck of good length, depth to the ribcage and well sprung giving the barrel appearance. Flowing topline, firm and level, carrying tail straight off the back. Complimentary angles fore and aft. She has an excellent side gait, showing reach and drive.

Liked her overall size and balance, nothing is exaggerated and carrying the correct amount of weight. Most feminine of heads, dark gentle eyes, strength to her foreface. Well developed through the body, well sprung ribs, chest well let down and tight elbows. Held her topline stood and on the move, otter tail carried correctly and with plenty of action.
