LEEDS CHAMPIONSHIP DOG SHOW

SPANISH WATER DOG

Judge: Mrs Jane Eyeington

I would like to thank Leeds Championship Show for their kind invitation to judge, at what turned out to be our first ‘imposed restriction free’ show. A well laid out showground, unfortunately our ring was on rather a slope, but the SWD exhibitors coped admirably. I must thank the exhibitors for their entry, some lovely dogs to judge and a nice atmosphere around the ring.

What a super start to judging the breed! Loved this 16 month old white & brown dog. He is such a sturdy and robust dog who shows all the desired breed traits. Masculine head, which is well proportioned, strength to the foreface, and a lovely dark eye. His neck is strong and muscular flowing very neatly into a firm and well held topline. Liked his depth and spring of rib. Angulation both fore and aft, is as required, moderate. Shown in tip top condition and fabulous coat. Moving out true and with drive. The bitch pipped him to the post with her sparkle in the final challenge for BOB. But so delighted to have been able to award him his first CC and BOS

Oh my what a sweet babe, this 12 month old black dog is very raw at present but has all the elements to mature well. Loved his cheeky nature, so alert, attentive and a bit of a fidget! He has such a kind expression from those dark oval eyes. Strength to his neck, enough depth and spring to the ribs for his age. Straight forelegs and tight well knuckled feet. Shown in a shorter coat, but you could see the curl coming through. Just needs time to settle

A pleasing outline on this 22 month old brown & white dog. Liked him for his overall balance when stood, as he is rectangular in appearance and sturdy all through. He just needs to gain a little more confidence to show himself off to full advantage. Well balanced head piece, with correct ratios, showing parallel planes and a dark eye. Strong short neck, holds a firm topline. He stands on well boned limbs. Moderately angulated, loved his strong and wide hindquarters, which he used to drive around the ring

Lots to like about this 3 year old brown and white dog. He gives the impression of being a robust and rustic looking dog that could work all day. Would perhaps like a fraction more length to the leg for complete balance. He is all male, with strength to his well proportioned head without being overdone, eye toning well with the coat. Muscular neck flowing well into a firm topline, lovely depth and spring to the ribcage. Strong and muscular hindquarters. Correct curl and texture to the coat. Showing reach and drive on the move.

2nd: 4622 RUTHERFORD, Mr M & HODGKINSON-RUTHERFORD, Dr K Ferrylands Invisible Man At Chanderhill (Imp Nor)

Another pleasing black dog, with much to admire. Liked his balance when stood, giving a shapely outline. He has a well proportioned head, with parallel planes, and a melting dark eye to give such an appealing expression. Strength to his neck, and with a deep brisket, a fraction wider in front. Hindquarters having width and a moderate bend of stifle. Nice short hocks. Moved a little close behind but showed good driving action.

Impressive profile to this black 2 year old dog, looking a picture when stood. He is very balanced all through and shows good body proportions. Gives the impression of being sturdy and robust. Masculine and well proportioned head, lovely dark oval eye. Strength to his neck which flows seamlessly into a firm topline. Liked his depth and spring of rib. Complimentary angulation both fore and aft. Well muscled hindquarters, and short hock to heel. A powerful mover, a fraction close behind, lovely in front and his side gait is a pleasure to watch. Shown with a good curl to his coat. Pleased to award him RDCC

No one has told this black dog, who is just shy of his 10th birthday, that he is no longer a puppy! He had an endearing mischievous manner to him today. His profile shows him to have a rectangular outline, with a good length of leg. Masculine head, with strength to the foreface and lovely dark eye. His expression was alert and keen. Good depth to the brisket. Moved close behind, but moved with enthusiasm and pizzazz, showing super drive.

1st: 4614 GLAYSHER, Mrs C & DONALDSON, Mrs F Kurlibears September Aurora

Most attractive 10 month old brown & white bitch, so feminine throughout yet still retains the robust quality. Her outline is of the correct proportions. Nicely balanced head, which showed parallel planes, well toning oval eye gives a soft intelligent expression. Her short strong neck flows well into a firm topline. Brisket is well let down with a nice spring to the ribs. Strength to the hindquarters. Clean in her front movement, a shade close behind, lovely drive when seen in profile. Correct coat texture and showing a good curl - BP

2nd: 4629 THOMPSON, Mrs K Kurlibears September Truffle (TAF)

Litter sister to winner, with much to admire, just needing time. She has a pleasing outline when stood, nicely balanced and in proportion. Feminine head, with an oval eye of good colour. Strong neck, firm topline. Not quite the depth and forechest of her sister at present. Liked her width of thigh and short hocks. Coat a little loose at present and tended to carry her tail a little high. Really strode out on the move, showing power from her hindquarters

Pleasing head, and mischievous hint to her dark eye. Liked her depth of brisket and nicely developed forechest. Forelegs showing well boned straight limbs. She holds a firm topline both stood and on the move. Good width to the thighs along with a moderate bend of stifle. Shown with a good curl and woolly texture to the coat

Very smart 2 year old white bitch, liked her flowing lines which combined robustness and feminine elegance. Shown in lovely coat and condition. She has such a balanced outline. Her head is well proportioned, with strength to the foreface, and kind oval eye. Depth to the body, with brisket well let down and nicely developed forechest. Firm topline held on the stack and when moving. Strong hindquarters gave purposeful movement. She was in the mix for top honours

2nd: 4626 SEARLES, Mrs V Adormidera Apache Rose

19 month old brown & white bitch, who has a pleasing outline when stood, nothing is overdone. But unfortunately, today lacked the sparkle. She has a balanced head, with kind eye toning well with the coat. Enough depth through the body and held a firm topline. Correctly angulated fore and aft. In a shorter coat, but enough to see the curl and texture. Just needing a little more enthusiasm on the move

Now coming into her own at 3 years old this brown & white bitch looks a picture when stood. She is shapely yet robust, having the desired body ratio for unexaggerated symmetry. So feminine throughout. Lovely head, which is well proportioned, having strength to the foreface, slight stop and flat skull. Her well toned eyes giving such a gentle yet alert expression. She has a strong short muscular neck, which flows to her firm topline. Pleasing depth and spring to her ribcage. Strong hindquarters, with a good width of thigh and short hocks. Presented with a coat with a good curl and woolly texture. Moving in harmony with her handler with correct footfall fore and aft. Delighted to award her RBCC

Of a different stamp to winner, but with many fine qualities and close decision. Well built and robust brown bitch, at 4 years of age has matured nicely. Hard to believe she is now in veteran, I have always admired her and thought her a full of quality bitch, with many fine attributes. She didn’t disappoint today as she showed herself off with confidence, displaying her balanced and unexaggerated outline. Typical in her silhouette and displaying the correct coat curl and texture. Her symmetry both standing and on the move is lovely to see. She shows power reach and drive when asked to move with the positive footfall, and that extra little sparkle to be awarded BCC and BOB against a lovely young dog who pushed her all the way.
