British Utility Breeds Association

Breed: Boston Terrier

BUBA BOSTON TERRIER 04.12.21

Firstly, Thank You to exhibitors for a strong numerical entry. This was much appreciated and I considered the entry a representation of how the breed stands at the moment in the UK.

Good points are that breeders are clearly trying to get some uniformity in basic body proportion. There were still a few longer bodied exhibits, mostly immature puppies or young adults but generally speaking we are not having as many dogs that are looking extremely long bodied. We must be careful that whilst aiming for squareness of shape we do not encourage upright rectangles; a dog can be ‘too' square, and this brings its own issues.

Undoubtedly the drags of the breed presently are toplines, tails (both set and carriage), incorrect eye and expression, and ears. All of these are essential aspects of breed type and we really need to work on sorting these issues out.

There is no real uniformity in head type at present.

Movement also was very varied and some exhibits that really pleased me for overall breed type just did not balance this with correct breed typical movement on the day which I suppose is the big challenge in the breed. There were no unsound dogs present but there were not a lot of exhibits with bang on breed typical movement.

Temperaments were in the main very good, and presentation throughout was of a good standard. Sportsmanship without exception was, as always, excellent.

MPD (2,1)

1st Kennedy's POPINIX MR BRIGHTSIDE. Real baby of 6 and a bit months. Very raw but with lots of promise. Basic proportion is good. Head is typical with nice balance of muzzle to skull. Eyes are round, dark, well placed and he has nice expression. Nose placement correct and he has the makings of a very good head. Ears well set and when he stops teething the curl in one will straighten. Neck correct for length, and nicely arched. Front assembly is good, with nicely boned forelegs and neat feet. Topline as yet not totally firm but it is almost level and he is good in croup and tailset. Rear nicely angled and when he settled he moved freely with the action of a puppy his age. Lovely temperament. Has promise.

PD (3,1)

1st King's KINGSLINE MUSKETEER. 9 month old brindle and white dog. Very compactly built youngster. Head is masculine and well proportioned. Nice for brow. Eyes are good for shape and colour. Nose placement ok. Very good width and depth to muzzle. Has strength of underjaw with correct chin. Bite good. Will finish nicely in head. Front assembly ok with reasonable width and depth to chest. Nice quality bone and good feet. Well ribbed. Topline could be more level. Loin short. Croup and tailset good. Rear well angled. Needs to strengthen in hock. Movement a bit unsettled. Overall a nice type of dog and I will look forward to seeing him as an adult. Won the class on breed type.

2st Winrow and Greaves’ JAYNEZE HUGO. 11.5 months old and a consummate showman. Medium sized dog having a bit of a lanky stage. Strikingly marked. Topskull flat between well set and carried ears. Eyes almond shaped and slightly light in colour. Really nice width and depth to his muzzle. Nose healthy. Clean in flew. Very good in neck. Wee bit straight in shoulder, as majority on the day were. Nice length of leg. Immature in chest as yet but plenty of time to come on there. Topline is good. Loin a wee bit long. Tail is set well, fine for length but carried slightly high when in motion. Movement as with class winner a bit uncoordinated. He needs time to mature on and grow into himself. Best of temperaments and very well handled and presented.

JD (4,0)

1st Bennet’s WILDAX LIVERPOOL LAD AT BOXBOS. A lot to like about this youngster. Nicely marked brindle and white coat in spanking condition. Basic body proportion is good, he is square in appearance and his angles both ends are complimentary. Head is masculine and square in appearance. Nose placement very good. Eye and expression is good. Ears well set, of pleasing size and carried correctly. Muzzle has width and depth, with decent strength to underjaw. Neck correct for length and good to see a smooth transition into withers. Shoulder ok but a tad short in upperarm. Good length of leg with nice bone and neat feet. Topline ok but not really enough curve to croup and tailset is too high. Rear end angled well, neat little hocks and he moves with correct reach and drive. A tidy dog with a lovely temperament.

2st Parker and Martin’s OLLEYVILLE MR OTHERSTON. Nicely proportioned dog and although still immature he is basically square in appearance. Beautifully marked dark brindle and white coat. Head presently needs a bit more work all through but he is masculine in this respect. Good in topskull. Ears well set and carried. Eyes are light and consequently his expression could be better. Lovely neck into one of the better forehands of the day. Nice bone and substance. Topline could be more level but with time and more body this will improve. Rear correct for angle with tidy hocks and he moved well.

3rd Rankin and Price's WILDAX JURGEN KLOPP

YD (1,0)

1st Kemeny's APRIKA DAVY CROCKETT. 22 month old brindle and white male. First impression is that he needs time. Slightly longer cast in body. Nicely headed dog, with lovely eye and expression. Muzzle in proportion to skull. Ears set well, carried correctly and are of pleasing size and shape. Nose placement good. Pigment excellent. Could be a wee bit flatter in cheek. Depth of muzzle ok and flews are clean. Lovely neck. Shoulders good. Lovely straight front with nice bone and neat tidy feet. Chest has room for development. Well ribbed. Loin a tad long. Topline almost level and he is very good in croup and tailset. Too much tuck up presently. Rear well angled. Moved soundly and a willing showman.

PGD (4,1)

1st and RDCC Sabri's HILLTOPS SKEPTA BOY KNOWS (IMP USA) A smart, well proportioned, neat dog of smaller size. Has some lovely breed typical attributes. Totally square in appearance. Head classically typical. Flat in topskull with the neatest of perfectly set ears. Eye correct for shape and colour and although I would prefer them slightly larger, his expression is good. Nose placement ideal. Muzzle very well balanced and in total harmony with his skull. Good in brow. Flat in cheek. Neck a tad short but not so much as to imbalance him. Shoulders good. Lovely well boned straight legs and the best of feet. Chest has width and depth but I would prefer a smidgeon more forechest. No dip behind withers. Excellent level topline flowing into a really nice croup and tailset. Rear angle in harmony with his front and when his handler got her act together he moved as his structure dictates. Coat is beautifully fine and close lying. Overall a dapper little chap with lovely breed type. If I could make any suggestion to his handler, please work ringcraft and build your comfidence, he is worth the effort. Pushed hard for DCC.

2nd Gracie's SUMMERGATE DOM PERIGNON. A substantial young brindle and white dog shining with condition. Squarely proportioned. Head is masculine and fairly square all through. Not the quality of expression of the class winner. Correct length of neck. Bit forward in front and needs to drop in chest. Slight dip behind the withers. Topline fairly level thereafter with a curve to croup and a low tailset. Could use more strength in hock. Moved ok. Willing showman with a happy disposition.

3rd Robinson's NORWILBECK LACOSTE

LD (5,1)

1st Hamlin’s ROSPARQUIER SMALL TALK FOR DEVOTOBLAZE. Mature mahogany brindle and white of larger size presented in excellent condition. He is longer bodied than I would like. Topline excellent; level from his withers to his croup both static and in motion. Head is all male and very square all through. Ear set is fine, would prefer them to be stronger. Eyes round in shape but a wee bit light in colour. Front assembly is good but he does have a tendency to overstretch himself which I attributed to his eagerness to please his handler. Excellent quality of bone. Very well ribbed. Longer in loin. Rear strongly made and his movement won him the class. Presented in first class order.

2nd Jefferson and Smith’s LOVEWELL BORN TO BE MY BABY. There is always one dog that infuriates the life out of you and today this was that dog. First impression is of masculinity and type. He is squarely proportioned. His head is fairly well balanced and square in appearance. Very well marked. Ear set and carriage good. Eyes show a tad too much white but his expression does not suffer unduly. Nose placement good. Muzzle wide and deep. Clean in flew. Neck and front assembly good. Chest well filled and lovely bone. Slight dip behind the withers and I would prefer his topline to be more level. Rear has strength to it but he had a tendency to stand with a sickle hock. Movement was fairly erratic, and despite his handler’s best efforts he just did not seem to want to pull himself together and get on with the task at hand.

3rd Rankin and Hale's WILDAX SCHUBERT

OD (6,1)

1st DCC and BOB. Harrison and Stoner's Ch. EAIRYCOR CELTIC MANXSPIRIT. Judged him as a youngster and didn’t think that much of him at all. Fast forward a couple of years and maturity has been very kind to him. Medium sized dog of considerable breed type. Square in appearance. Head masculine without a hint of coarseness. Best of ears. Eye and expression good but being picky, which I am, I’d like them a bit larger. Lovely flat cheek and a really tidy finish to muzzle. Nose placement very good. Has an abruptness to his brow. Topskull flat. Neck ideal for length and nicely arched. Front assembly good. Bone and substance commensurate with his size and he stands on neat feet. Withers and topline very good. Smooth transition all through from his neck to his tailset. Ribbing good, correct moderate tuck up. Rear I’d like a smidgeon more angle but he moved accurately with correct reach and drive for the breed. Beautiful sparkling fine coat. He was presented in excellent nick and his temperament and showmanship is a credit to him. Very well handled to a deserved BOB.

2nd Rankin's Ch. Wildax The Real Thing. Overall impression of this dog is HONEST. Nicely sized, well balanced example of masculinity without coarseness. Square in proportion and compactly built all through. Head is all male. Pleasing in topskull. Ears are good and he uses them well. Eye and expression ok. Width to muzzle very good and his quality of lip is also good. Bite good. Neck proportionately correct, nicely arched, and leads to a very soundly made front assembly. Bone commensurate for his size, with good feet. Very well ribbed and strong through his short loin. Rear again has strength to it and his hocks are very good. Topline static, slight slope. Topline in motion, slope gone and topline level. Tailset is good. My thoughts are that the accurate shape of this dog is shown when he moves rather than when he is strung static. Movement very sound. An interesting dog to get your hands on and despite pushing the winner hard, I just preferred the winners overall type. Well presented exhibit in the best of condition.

3rd King's KINGSLINE COLONEL MUSTARD

MPB

1st BPB AND BPIB. Jefferson and Smith's LOVEWELL LETS MAKE IT BABY. This is the one I’d have taken home. The rawest of babies at her first show and although being a wee bit overawed, her type and quality could not be denied. Beautifully feminine in outlook and proportionally she is almost square in body. Head has real quality. Lovely dark round eye of correct size giving a beautiful expression. Neat little erect ears bang on top of her flat skull. Nose placement ideal. Cheeks flat. Muzzle nicely proportioned and in balance with her skull. Bite good. Lovely neck into a very sound front. Balanced leg length. Topline although babyish is very good and she held it well both static and in motion. Her rear angle compliments her front and her tail, tail set, and carriage is correct. Moved as a baby should. A very pretty little bitch and with time and maturity should mature into something very tidy.

2nd Ward's FRENBOSEN ROCKABY LULLABY. Another very tidy baby and much of the same remarks apply. A larger and more substantial puppy than the winner. Lovely mahogany brindle and white coat. Basic proportion is good and her quality of bone is excellent. Head obviously immature but has scope to finish nicely. Lovely neck and front assembly. Chest maturing well and she is true all through. Withers and topline really smooth and her ribbing and loin is good. Tail set a bit too high. Rear angle very good and for a baby she moved very well. Another promising puppy.

3rd Murphy's WINDMIX-N-ISC ALONG BEACHES OF ISLAY naf (IMP POL)

PB (6,1)

1st Moscicka's HONEY CUTIE PIE IMPERIAL ERIADOR WITH VIVAESPOIR naf. Another lovely baby with a ton of promise. Feminine and typical. Square and compact in shape. Short, fine coat in great condition. Head is maturing well. Eye and expression good. Ear set slightly low. Skull has strength and muzzle is in balance. Nose placement excellent. Nice flat cheeks. Neck good. Front assembly very sound with good width, depth and fill to chest. Bone and feet good. Body short and compact with good ribbing. Topline could be more level. Croup good and tailset low. Rear has adequate angle. Needs to strengthen a bit in hock. Moved tidily and held her shape well. Nice temperament and a willing showgirl.

2nd Winrow's JAYNEZE CANDY CANDLAND. Another smart little bitch of a very similar make and shape to the class winner. Attitude in abundance, and quite the little showgirl. Square and compact in shape. Well ribbed, short in loin, correct tuck up. Really nice for neck and her shoulder and front is good. Rear angled well. As with first place she too needs to strengthen a wee bit in hock. Not quite the quality in head of the winner, but hers has a cleanness to it that appeals. Lovely, neat ears and she uses them all the time. An attentive showgirl and an interesting exhibit.

3rd Barclay's JANGAR SHOOTING STAR.

JB (6,2)

1st Walker's ZIOST REBEL COMMANDER SNIPS. Very smart dark brindle and white of just over a year old. Very compactly built. Headpiece has quality. Eye and expression good, as are ears. Nice squareness to her skull. Lovely abruptness to her brow. Muzzle has width and depth and is proportionate to her skull. Neck can look a bit short due to markings, but hands on tells you it is actually proportionate. Front straight and chest maturing well. Well off for ribbing. Correct tuck up. Topline slightly sloping. Tail set is good and her rear is well muscled with neat short hocks. Moved soundly. Lovely temperament.

2nd Hayhurst's WYNELE WHOS THAT GIRL AT KEYCHARM. Medium sized beautifully marked brindle and white. Squarely made, with nice substance to her. Nice neck seamless flowing into a really very good topline, ending with a correct croup and tailset. Soundly made in front and rear and she moved very well. Head is cleanly made. Nice ears. Eye and expression ok. She moved well.

3rd Monk’s OLERIA OVER THE RAINBOW.

YB (4,0)

1st Rodaway’s MARANN'S THE PROTESTER AT DEMORACE. Ultra smart brindle and white larger sized bitch with lots to like about her. Has strength all through but retains femininity. Slightly longer cast in body. Head balanced. Eye and expression good. Ears a smidgeon low set but carried correctly and she uses them all the time. Adequate length of neck. Front is lovely. Topline very good. I’d like her a bit shorter in loin. Rear is well made and she moves very well. Lovely temperament and she was shown in fabulous nick. A nice bitch.

2nd Mason's APRIKA DALLAS. 22 month old dark brindle. Many of the same remarks apply to her as to first place. Nice for size, and as with first place, she too is slightly longer cast in body. Head is clean and feminine. Nice in front, straight and true with adequate bone. Good feet. Slight dip behind the withers, thereafter topline ok. Ribbing good, but a bit too much tuck up. Rear angled well. Moved a bit close in rear. Happy temperament.

3rd Pellowe's BOSPELTZ EARTH ANGEL.

NB (7,1)

1st Schfaild’s ESANGEE NORTHERN SOUL STAR AT VICKVALLY. Almost 2.5 year old dark brindle and white of medium size. Lovely bitch for type. Compactly built and very well made all through. Nice bone and substance, tidy neat feet. Head feminine but with strength. Lovely abrupt brow and topskull excellent. Eye and expression good. Ears slightly low set and I would like them a bit smaller in size. Neck has enough length for balance. Very well ribbed. Topline not her fortune. Rear adequately angulated and she moved ok.

2nd Dunkeld's ELEMI SPARKS WILL FLY. 4 and a bit year old brindle and white. Similar for size to the winner. Wee bit longer bodied. Head feminine, eye and expression good. Muzzle in proportion to skull. Neck nice for length. Front ok. Topline almost level. Croup and tailset ok. Too much tuck up. Rear angle good. Moved erratically which cost her the class.

3rd Allen's BUTTERBANK TOP BOOTS.

PGB (4,1)

1st and BCC. Schfaild and Harrison's VICKVALLY LOVE AND DESIRE. This was a new one to me. Smaller brindle and white bitch and all of a piece. Square in outline, square in head. Feminine in outlook and animated in temperament. Head has quality. Eye and expression good. Ears excellent. Muzzle wide and deep. Flews clean, evident chin. Bite good. Nose placement good and cheeks flat. Neck nice for length, not too short nor too long, shoulder good, forelegs straight with bone and substance to suit her size. Very good in topline. Very well ribbed. Loin short and strong. Croup and tailset good. I’d like a tad more angle behind. Hocks short and strong. She moved with determination with moderate reach and drive and she has an animated and keen disposition. A very tidy bitch. Happy to award her the CC.

2nd Hunter and Spenser's WILDAX LITTLE MIX. Nicely marked bitch of a larger size. Honest as the day is long. Very well made all through. Slightly longer cast than class winner. Not the head of the class winner but she has a strength and squareness to it. Neck strong, front assembly excellent. Topline good and rear is very sound. Moved well and handled to her best advantage. Very good temperament. A very sound bitch.

3rd Rees and Scott's SONDURIYA ITSU BLACK FOX AT TALKACCUTUR.

LB (4,0)

1st and RBCC. Kennedy's ESANGEE MY SHINING STAR OVER ANTRIX. Strikingly marked well made bitch of 2.5 years old. An honest sort with some really nice breed qualities. Basic proportion is good. Head very typical. Square in appearance. Eye and expression good. Ears set well and carried correctly. Muzzle correct for balance, bite good. Lovely neck of moderate length. Front assembly pleasing. Well boned forelegs with good feet. Ribs well sprung. Topline could be smoother behind withers but it ain’t a dealbreaker. Loin strong. Croup and tailset very good and rear moderately angled. Neat little hocks. She moved well fore and aft, had a lovely temperament and her quality and type earned her the RBCC.

2nd Rankin and Price's WILDAX PENNY LANE. A smart looking bitch of just over 2 years old. I found on the day to lack some maturity in body, but what is there is pleasing. Compact in outline, very good in topline. Has some curve to croup and tail is set well. Front assembly is where she needs to mature on a bit. Well arched neck of proportionate length. Head is feminine with some strength. Eye and expression good. Brow good. Balance of skull to muzzle good, with plenty of work in it. Ears a bit low set and slightly soft. Moved soundly with correct reach and drive. Shown in good nick and handled well.

3rd Gill's SHAWMUT I AM LADY LIBERTY AT SIMBERFOUR JW

OB (7,2)

1st Costello's EAIRYCOR CELTIC FAIRY MIST AT BURTELLOS. Best head of the day on this bitch. If you want to see squareness of head, balance of skull to muzzle, with correct eye and expression, take a good look at her. Bodywise she is short coupled all through. Front assembly is ok, but she needs more depth of chest. Ribbing is good. Topline almost level and croup and tailset good. Bit too much tuck up. I’d prefer more angle behind. Let herself down on the move today. Overall a beautifully typey bitch with a lot to like. One of a few really tidy exhibits that on the day just wasnt giving of their best.

2nd Kane's FERRISHYNS SANDINISTA. Another uncooperative madam that shares the qualities of head of the class winner. Two beautifully headed bitches and this one lost out to the winner on body proportion. Eye and expression is textbook. Nose placement ideal. Brow ideal. Topskull ideal. Muzzle in total harmony with the skull and her bite is good. If I am being picky I’d like slightly neater ears that are a smidgeon higher set. Nice neck into a very sound shoulder assembly. Well boned legs and neat feet. Ribbing good. Topline has a dip behind the withers and she could be squarer in body. Croup and tailset bang on and her rear is muscular and strong. Like the first place winner, she decided to be uncooperative on the move. A sound bitch, that evidently knows her own mind too well.

3rd Mason's Ch APRIKA CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' JW

VB (2,0)

1st Kane's Ch YAKEE ANGEL OF HARLEM. 10 year old bitch put down in spanking condition and easily among the best moving exhibits of the day. Flashily marked and eyecatching both static and in motion, she certainly belies her years. Body is slightly longer cast than ideal. Topline is very good. Front and quarters are sound. She moves very well on neat and tidy feet and her enthusiasm for the task at hand is admirable. Steady in temperament, a consummate professional and an excellent example of enduring soundness.

2nd Schfaild’s VICKVALLEY MY DEAR HEART JW. Another lovely old dear still retaining some really nice aspects of breed type. Altogether a lovely head, with beautiful eye and expression. Body short and compact and her front and rear are sound. Clearly she is a lady who lunches a tad more than she should but God love her she deserves it.

Two nice bitchess and I appreciated going over them.

SBB (1,0)

1st Svitanova, Skubal, Svitan's VALBROWN’S FATGIRL SLIM RIN-TIN-TONYA naf (IMP HUN) A smart baby. Body developing on the right lines and her basic proportion is good. Head very immature at present, and ears need to strengthen, but she has bags of time. Neck, front and topline all good and her rear facilitates sound movement. She needs lots of time but she has promise.
