British Bulldog Club

Sunday, 21st November 2021

I wanted to first thank the committee and members of the British Bulldog Club for inviting me to judge this most prestigious event. I was truly honored.

The stewards were first rate and provided a seamless transition between classes. Very efficient. It was much appreciated.

I found a lovely group of well presented, sound dogs, all very obviously highly thought of by their owners and handlers.

Coats and eyes were all clear and healthy.

I put them through their paces and did not have any dogs noticeably panting.

Quality was generally average to good, with a few standouts. I did see quite a few narrow jaws which surprised me at an English show, and not quite as many of the high quality heads as I had come to expect.

Many dogs had lovely, straight tails, although quite a few were too high set.

As in all countries, the classic front assembly, particularly the “tacked-on” shoulder, the muscled outer forearms the and correctly placed elbows have become somewhat elusive.

Hopefully breeders can recognize this and work to improve it.

And as always, toplines as a worldwide group continues to require better focus.

Class 1

VB (3 2)

1-#14- Collins and Gillingwater Linfordpride Juno Eclipse

8 year old white bitch of correct size and good condition with a lovely, happy attitude. Correct square head with a high and well broken up forehead. Ears set far from the eyes, accentuating her long skull. Large nose with good nostrils. Wide and true jaw with good length. Lovely slanted shoulders. Correctly set and placed elbows with good legs, strong pasterns and good feet. Deep body with good rib spring. Rear legs correctly made. Sound moving. She was very lively going around the ring and really enjoyed herself. Always a joy to judge the vibrant veterans.

Well formed back legs. Short hocks. Moved soundly. This lovely pup went on to win Best Puppy Dog

2-#101- Steele- Chayo White Knight at Chelseapride.

White with red (pied). Excellent size, with age-appropriate substance. I feel this is a very promising pup that will benefit from maturity. Well-shaped head with a flat and well furrowed forehead, correctly shaped ears placed far from the eyes, showing good length in back skull. Dark well-placed eye with good pigment. Large nose. Wide jaw with good turn. Brisket well filled. Well placed elbows. Good legs, straight pasterns, good feet. Good neck showing a good arch. Good depth of body with good rib spring. Rose ears placed well away from his eyes with good width between them. Lovely dark pigment with dark round eyes. Large nose. Good chop. Wide and true jaw with good depth and upturn. Good dewlap. Chest had good depth and fullness. Slanting shoulders. Legs well formed with good pasterns and good feet. Good depth of body with good spring of rib. Good shape to his topline. Tail was shorter than what is considered ideal but the set was acceptable. Good rear construction. Good rear muscle tone. Sound mover. He had a happy and very pleasant attitude.

2-#58-MacDonald-The Bone Collector at Winenbru. Reddish fawn colored pup of good size. Square head showing appropriate immaturity. Rose ears set well. Will improve with age. Round dark eyes. Thick chop. Jaw showing good turn up but not showing significant width. Not as thick through his chest and body. Not uncommon in a puppy in this age group. Reasonable shape to his topline but showing a tail set higher than what is ideal. Sound moving with a confident attitude.

3- #70-Nash Smoochabull He Got Game

Class 4

JD (6 1)

1-#96- Pleat’s Platinum Edition. White dog with red head marking. A well proportioned dog with correct size and appropriate substance. Square head with good width and flatness between his correctly placed, rose ears. Dark and well placed eyes with excellent pigment. Large square frontal bones created a good stop and corresponding clear furrow. Large nose. Lovely full chop. Jaw was true, however teeth were narrow between the canines and not straight. Shoulders showing some slant, good turn to his forearm. Well placed elbows. Inner legs remain straight with well formed and slightly out turned feet.

Depth of chest was shy of where it might likely be at full maturity. The formation of the entirety of his front was keeping in good relation, point to point. Good depth of body from the side. Looking down, well sprung ribs created a good pear shape. Good topline. Good tail, well placed and carried. Sound rear construction. Short hocks. Sound mover.

2-#9- Brooks-Mighty King Arthur. White dog of good size. Large head with good width between his ears. Dark eye. Large nose. Jaw wide and true with good depth. Good depth to his chest but similar to the first place dog with the need for more slant to the shoulder and a better placement for the elbows. Strong pasterns and good feet. Chest wide, deep and full. Strong slanted shoulders with elbows set correctly. Strong, well formed legs with good muscling to the calves, strong pasterns and good feet. Looking in profile, I found all the beautiful curves. From the well arched neck to the lovely formation of his topline; slight fall close behind the shoulder, graceful rise to the loin, ending with a straight tail that was set fairly low, and carried correctly downward, even while moving. Corresponding to the well arched loin, he has a lovely tucked-up belly. Body was capacious with well sprung ribs. Hind legs correctly made with good muscle tone. I would prefer a shorter hock.
