Birmingham National Dog Show – Papillons

My sincere thanks to the committee of the National for the invitation to award CCs in Papillons for the first time. I was thrilled to have such a bumper entry alongside the breed club’s Championship show. Many of the exhibits and exhibitors were on their first outing post-lockdown and just getting back into the swing of things, so there were a few naughty or slighty-nervous dogs, I was forgiving of this and wanted to give them as much chance to relax back into the experience.

Overall, I was very happy with my main winners, top quality examples of the breed that would be storming the ring in any year. I found it a little difficult to find a consistent type throughout the classes, there’s some quite considerable variation, particularly in heads which is such an important feature of this lovely breed, often I could find some features but not all together. The standard calls for a slightly rounded skull, with well defined stop, 1:2 proportions, ears heavily fringed and set at 45 degrees; combined these give the correct distinctive image of this breed.

Put simply, she is dainty, balanced in every way and spot on for size and overall shape. Front on, her head and ears with excellent fringing give the requisite appearance of a butterfly’s wings.
