Breed: Spaniel (Field)

FIELD SPANIELS

Thank you to the hardworking committee for allowing me the honour of judging my beloved Breed at his friendly show. Thank you too, to my very jolly steward, who kept the ring running smoothly with patience and good humour. No CCs on offer, so I was delighted with my entry at this midweek show, and was treated with some lovely exhibits to go over.

Puppy D/B (1)

1st: Houseman’s FlyenPyg First Sight. Liver dog, 9 months. Sturdy lad, very puppyish in head at the moment, correct bite; kindly eye and expression, good ear set. Well off for bone, A really happy wiggly youngster, with a super temperament, who delighted in giving his handler a hard time. Moved ok once settled. BP

Junior D/B (2)

1st: Porter, Russell & Palm's Bogdogs Brynnyth at Winsbrook. Striking looking Liver dog, just 12 months. Up to size, well off for bone and well muscled. Masculine head with decent length of muzzle, wide open nostrils. Eyes conveying a kindly expression; framed by correctly set, well feathered ears. Good angulation fore and aft allowed him to move with drive, the ground clearly suiting him. One to watch. RBD

2nd: Hardings Kingsmist Firedance, sweet black bitch of just 12 months super head and expression, neck of good length, into well placed shoulders, ok for bone. Showed herself very well on the move..

Post Graduate D/B (6, 2a)

1st: Adams and Lewis Irisbel Cherish You. 2.5 yrs Black bitch that I last judged as a puppy. Good head, chiselling now evident, giving added refinement. She has the gentlest of expressions, with a fleeting twinkle of mischief! Everything I liked about her as a puppy, still holds true today. Straight front, good depth of chest, length of rib and back, strong loin and holds her topline well. Made her handler work hard, but once settled she showed how well she can move.

2nd: Moore’s Nadavin Yaling for Gemelbet pretty 2 yr old Liver bitch. Super head, good length of muzzle, well defined occiput, almond eye with sweet expression Lovely shape, good proportions and well balanced all through. Moved OK. All the essentials but needs time to mature.

Limit D/B (2, 1a)

1st: Harding’s Kingsmist Miss Marple. Smart Black bitch with pleasing head proportions, and a melting expression. Good reach of neck, super lay of shoulder, well off for bone, straight front with good depth of chest, ribs moderately sprung. Shown in hard condition, held a firm topline. She presented a lovely outline, and although she stood alone, never stopped showing herself off. Another that seemed to relish being outside, and covered the ground well, with a steady stride. RBB

Open Dog (1)

1st: Adams and Lewis Sh Ch Nadavin Yaden at Irisbel. 2yr old Liver. Beautifully put together - best of heads - correct length of muzzle, eyes of correct shape, with tight fitting lids. Benign yet slightly haughty expression, as befits nobility. Low set ears, of good length and nicely feathered.. Well muscled neck, super lay of shoulder. Straight front with flat bone, deep chest and moderately sprung ribs - giving plenty of heart room. Strength in loin, and well muscled rear. Moderate turn of stifle and hocks well let down Shown in gleaming coat and condition, he owned the ring as he covered the ground with drive. No hesitation in awarding him top honours. It was a pleasure to watch him later in the BIS ring, where he gave another good account of himself. A real showman. BOB

Open Bitch (2)

1st: Bebb-Sutton’s Cochen Flamenco. Last judged this Liver Bitch 3 years ago, when she was in Limit, and everything I liked about her then, still applies today. Typically feminine head, which couldn't be mistaken for anything other than a Field Spaniel - oozes nobility. Outline still pleases, as do her proportions. Smartly turned out, shown in hard condition, she didn’t disappoint on the move. BB

2nd: Harding Kingsmist Lady in Black, another I have judged before and done well. Beautiful head, plenty of chiselling, good length of muzzle, well set ears of good length and the kindest of eyes. Slightly taller than 1, but in proportion. Good bone, another in hard condition, but not quite the positive movement of the class winner today.
