Whippet Bitches

Judge: Cathie Brown

What a pleasure to judge the whippet girls at the Houndshow! If they are anything to go by the breed is in excellent shape. There were plenty of well constructed, correctly moving examples of the breed to choose from. Every class winner and the placed dogs had much to admire about them.

The quality ran deep in most classes. It is fair to say that this has not always been my experience when judging the breed, so it was a joy to find more girls than I expected to whose handler I could have handed the big green card! The happy impression I gained from my entry was that the breed has improved since I last judged. I saw far fewer with serious movement faults. Fronts seemed better, not so many of the straight upper arms and short upright shoulders which result in a whippet toeing in. It was also good to see that rears were more moderate in this entry with fewer examples of weak over angulated hindquarters.

Anyone present on the day will recall that it was roasting hot and that the grass in the ring was long. These two factors affected movement without doubt, and several exhibits were unsurprisingly lacklustre. I made allowance for this and also for tail carriage in such conditions.

A whippet is a sporting dog. They should be fit, well muscled and athletic. Happily I didn't see too many whippets carrying extra lockdown pounds to spoil their figures, but I was massively disappointed to find so many in really soft condition. Whippets love the sofa but they need free running to maintain a sleek, well conditioned physique.

I was looking for examples of the breed that had the beautiful correct whippet outline, both graceful and strong with curves in the right places that flowed seamlessly into each other, without awkward angles where there should be smooth lines.

I don't quote the standard endlessly in my critiques but it can be assumed that my winners fitted it in most respects. By the same token I do not point out a dogs faults, no dog is perfect but they should exhibit breed type regardless of a few imperfections in conformation.

I would like say a huge thank you to all the exhibitors who brought their beautiful whippets for me to judge, it was a pleasure to meet each and every one as the sun beat down on us, and thanks to them it was a memorable and very enjoyable judging experience.
