Bullmastiffs Birmingham National 26th September 2021
I would like to thank Birmingham National for inviting me to award my first set of CC’s in Bullmastiff's. The hospitality was amazing and were all very welcoming.
The committee have done an amazing job trying to make the first indoor/outdoor Ch show of the year a success and I think they achieved it after what we can only describe as a horrendous past 18 months of the dreaded COVID.
Firstly I would like to thank my stewards for doing a wonderful job.
Secondly I would like to thank the exhibitors for entering. I was amazed at the entry and very honoured that people wanted my opinion on their exhibits on show today.
When I began to judge I had in my head what I believe in what a bullmastiff should be.
Powerful
Substance
Bone
I found some very promising youngsters which looks positive for the breed.
I felt the bitches in the higher classes were much stronger than the dogs overall.
I wasn’t going to mention this part as I would hope it wouldn’t be a problem now but I feel I really need to mention it.
I judged this breed back in 2018 and on that occasion I felt that the breed was lacking in some very important breed points. I found a lot of the following…….
Light eyes
Bad mouths
Body length
Top lines
I can honestly say that today was much better than previous. Still some dogs becoming too long in the back. Mouths are still a big problem in some classes. I did find some with the desired level bite which is always a delight to see.
I think it is vital that breeders and exhibitors need to remember what this breed was intended for! Powerful dogs
Substance
Bone with an overall balance.

MALES
SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG
1st BRYAN MRS N
OKUMA MAXIMILIAN AT TONICBULL
12 months male full off his own self importance today giving his handler a tough time.
His head was large and square, mouth was ok. A good dark eye that gave him the appealing expression.
Thick set neck that was well muscled, his shoulders are developing well. Was short in back and had well angulated hindquarters. On the move he was rather erratic at first but once settled you could see that he had the drive behind him helping him hold held his top line. If I was being a tad critical I would have liked to have seen a clearer fawn colouring.
MINOR PUPPY DOG
1st BEAL
EMSUART ROCKETMAN
At only 7 month old what a lovely balanced outline he had on the stack. The desired head I would like to see at this stage of his growing, well placed ears and the darkest off eyes. He excelled in front end construction with the correct shoulder placement which lead down to straight legs, he stood on fab feet for a baby. Short in the back with good ribs. Hindquarters coming along very nicely and this showed on his easy movement around the ring keeping his top line firm and covering ground. BPD
2nd SMITH,TODD,TOOD
ALONZOBAR RED SKY FOR DELARHIA NAF TAF
7 month old male that had plenty going for him. I particularly loved that he had bone and substance. Head and eye were in proportion and at the right stage in growing. He had a good width to his bottom jaw. Another that made a pleasing shape on stack showing a good body length and good rear angulation also a good tail length. He lost out on his movement today as he was a bit unsteady but got there in the end. Would like to see how he matures
3rd WARREN & WARREN
COPPERFIELD DUBBLEY
PUPPY DOG
1st FRESHNEY C
HYERDUNSCAR RENAISSANCE AT BULLENCA
Striking 11 month fawn male that had one of the squarest of heads today. The desired black pigment on muzzle and around the eyes. His front construction was well developed with his chest broad and his legs straight and great cat feet, longer in back than I particularly like but that didn’t stop him having an easy flow on the go around. I think he’s up on height and would like to see him once filled out. He won this class on his head and mouth.
2nd BROWN
ZANSHINS JIMMY CHOO
Another that had the correct amount of bone. I would have preferred a more square appearance off his head. His mouth could be better and a tad longer in muzzle than desired. Thick set neck front is strong and stood on great feet. Back was ok and had enough angulation. On the move he was steady and striding out well.
JUNIOR DOG
1st POPP, POPP, MYERS & MORGAN
OPTIMUS THOMAS MORSE OF PENYCHEN
14 month old amazing clear fawn, his head is at a good stage in that you can see how he will finish in shape. Correct mouth showing enough width of muzzle with good open nostrils. Slightly longer in body which spoiled his shape. Both correct in front and hind assembly helping him drive from the rear to power around the ring
2nd. BRYAN
OKUMA MAXIMILIAN AT TONICBULL
same as Special beginners critique but I would like to add he was very much more high spirited on the go around which spoiled him and couldn’t asses movement
YEARLING DOG
1st YOUNGS
STAXONOBY HUSSLE N MOTIVATE
23 month old male which came into the ring and just looked straight at me as if to say “I’m the winner!”. He is a lovely rich red male with the correct balance and strength on stack. Large masculine head with the squareness of both head and muzzle and excellent mouth which I was looking for today. I found his ear placement just finished off his expression. Well muscled neck that sat on well placed shoulders and well boned legs finishing off with tight feet. Short and substantial body with well developed rib. Well powered muscular hind quarters and bend of stifle. On the move he drove from behind giving him the power and easy movement which complimented his parallel front movement. He won the DCC and BOB today on his overall appearance and substance, was proud to watch him in the Big ring. Well done on gaining his first CC. Hopefully more judges will recognise this males overall qualities he has for the breed.
2nd HUMPHRIES & LOWTON
LUMILLION SHOW N’TELL (A.I)
18 months old male that has masses of bone and substance, overall he had the shape and balance and typical look at me I’m all male. His head was large and showing good width of muzzle and well placed ears. Strong bone throughout. He over knuckle in front which made him loose his overall shape. He did play his handler up and he was very energetic on the up and down. But overall had he correct substance
POST GRAD DOG
1st PORTER &BOWSER
ARAUCARIA MALUS SYLVESTIS
What a stunning colour this boy is, so striking to look at. Presented a good overall shape for a 2 years old male. His head is still maturing but could see plenty of depth and width in him. Power in his front assembly with good rear angulation. Would have preferred a bit shorter in loin. Moved steady with his handler covering the ground well.
2nd PARKIN
STONEGLAD FIGARO AT MARSHBULL
2 and a half red male. He screams masculinity. Very much the attributes of one but I did prefer height of this male but lost out on movement.
LIMIT DOG
1st SLATER
CHALFS MISTER RED
Looking at this male on first glance, I was like yes! definitely in consideration for top honours
Beautiful red in colour, his head was of correct size and proportion with good muzzle width. He had one of the best shoulder placements of the day, ideal length in body, a good rib and short loin well muscled rear and good tail length reaching the hock. On the move he just glided out with great drive and style. I really thought he would have been one off the main winners but sadly not today. He lost out on top honours due to his size. I would have liked him marginally bigger but still a beautiful dog.
2nd LATTER & LATTER
STONEGLAD DAKOTA
Lots to like about him in that he has bone and substance. Such a dark brindle male at 3 years old he was larger in stature and had more substance about him. Had dark eyes that were set well into his head. He was longer in back than one but still strutted his stuff. He lost out on overall showmanship. Still a very nice brindle male
OPEN DOG
This class had 2 top winning dogs, different in type but still very promising. There is no taking it away from them both, they deserve their wins equally and I applaud them for doing our breed well but today I felt there was one dog in this class that was marginally better.
1st MYERS & MORGAN
OPTIMUS JACK DANIELS (ai)
Litter brother to 3rd place. A worthy winner in his own right.
I have previously give this male a BIS at breed open show and he had certainly came on well
He has matured well with the classic bullmastiff head square and broad with correct mouth, his ear set finished his look. Well muscled neck into developed shoulders and fore chest. Straight front legs with tight feet. Well bodied and firm top line, angulated in rear and firmness that gave him the ultimate drive from behind. Pleased to award him the RCC
2nd DAVIES
CH HYERDUNSCAR ON A MISSION WITH COULBYMOOR JW
A worth CH with the cleanest outline and clearest fawn colouring. At 6 years old he is fully matured, his head is well balanced with well placed teeth. His neck was of good strength and shoulders well muscled. I would have preferred him to be a little shorter in back to make his shape more balanced. His rear drive is powerful and keeps his top line on the move, losing out to one as I thought one had more bone and a slightly stronger head. Another that has done well in the previous years gaining top awards in the working group and BIS level. I applaud you for making our breed stand out
3rd MYERS & MORGAN
CH OPTIMUS DANZY JONES JW
I never done a critique for 3rd in any class but I would like to give this dog a special mention he has done our breed very well in the past few shows since COVID. For me today I preferred the litter brother in his overall head proportions and 2nd to his overall ring presence but this male is a worthy CH and well done for doing so well.
BITCHES
SPECIAL BEGINNERS BITCH
1st HANDS
STAXONOBY FLAWLESS
This bitch won this class on her classic head shape and breed specific points, feminine expression with correct mouth and good teeth. Neck well arched, her front legs were straight and feet were tight. A tad long in loin giving her a longer back. Enough back end angulation helping move with purpose and drive whilst keeping level top line. Best special beginners
2nd YOUNGS
STAXONOBY ENTER THE DRU
Litter sister to first place, very much similar in shape and proportions. Richer red than her sister I preferred sisters head in that it was a lot more square. On the move she still strides out well
MINOR PUPPY BITCH
Lovely class of puppies
1st ROBERTS
JOYBULL MISS DYNAMITE
Just a baby at 6 months old but what a little star. She had the most clearest of fawn colouring. Could see that her head is at the right stage off development with her dark eyes and the darkest of muzzle, helped along with dark pigment around the eyes. Arched neck and well placed shoulders giving her a good front assembly. Her feet needs to tighten up but still a baby. Short compact body on the move keeping a steady gait with her tail carried correctly. Moved sound for a 6 month puppy should finish a nice bitch
2nd LATTERS
SOTARBACKENS MOCKINGJAY STONEGLAD
Another 6 month old baby that made a lovely picture on stack, her head was square with well set ears giving a square appearance. Fore chest broad and shoulders in correct placement. Another where feet need to tighten but also just a baby. Short in the back moved around the ring in style showing correct form of reach which she excels in. Just lost out to one as I would have preferred her to be a clear fawn but still a nice baby.
3rd MYERS &MORGAN
OLD MANILAS TROUBLE AT OPTIMUS (imp nor) TAF NAF
PUPPY BITCH
1st LINDLEY
HYERDUNSCAR PARDN MY FRENCH
11 month old bitch that you couldn’t walk past without taking a second glance. Her head had the most wonderful dark markings around the eyes giving her the desired look this was topped off by her head being square and her ears in the correct position. Had good width of under jaw with correct bite, fore chest coming on with straight limbs and superb feet. She was in excellent condition body wise with well angulated rear end. On the move this is where she got my attention with great foot fall and keeping rock hard top line. RBCC BPIB. I would have preferred a shorter back but that is just my preference, still a quality bitch
2nd WARREN &WARREN
ALLWATCHA THYME OF COPPERFIELD
I liked this bitch when she was on the stack, her head was strong but feminine with one off the best mouths today. Strong thick set neck flowing into well placed shoulders well boned front legs. I preferred her shortness of body than one but she lost out as she was playing her handler up. Another nice baby, given a bit off time she should be a nice girl once matured.
3rd CHARLTON
BULLMISIAS GLORY
JUNIOR BITCH
1st COLLIASS
ENDLESSACRES SYBIL AT OLDWELL
Easy class winner today another bitch that had the desired pigment around eyes that is needed for a clear fawn. She is shaping up to be a nice girl with her head that is at the right stage. I particularly liked her shape and shortness in back that gave her a nice outline on stance. Had enough rear bend of stifle, her movement around the ring was rather nice to watch.
2nd FASCOINE
JADANELLE JESSIE MOON
More substantial bitch than one with more bone and substance, large square head, very thick set neck. Broad chest, great feet. I would have preferred her top line to be more straight on the move she tended to dip behind her shoulders which spoiled her shape on the move.
I preferred the overall picture and shape off one
3rd DOWNS
OPTIMUS MULBERRY
YEARLING BITCH
1st HAND
STAXONOBY FLAWLESS
SAME AS SPECIAL BEGINNERS
2nd TURNER &TURNER
SUNDABISH MANILLA LUZON
Very compact brindle bitch, on first look I thought this was my class winner. I really liked her classic head shape with a really good dark eye and correct shape. Her front end construction was very good with a good broad chest and well placed legs, ultra short in back with a good carriage underneath. Well muscled hind end on the move. She is very confident and had a good front reach but lost out on 1st as I preferred the back end drive off one. But a very honest bitch
3rd SMOTH TODD TODD
ZENA PRINCESS WARRIOR FROM DELARHIA
POST GRAD BITCH
1st HILLARY
OKUMA TENNESSEE WALKER
I looked at this bitch on stack and thought ‘what a beautiful shape and overall balance’ I would have preferred a better head on this bitch but still a pleasant look with the correct bite. Arched neck that was flowing into well angulated shoulder placement with great front legs. Another that has the shortness off body, well muscled rear and well turned stifle. She easily won this class on her movement. Such a positive gait that had the power and drive with her tail carriage that continued on from her steady top line.
2nd BIGHAM BIGHAM MYERS &MORGAN
OPTIMUS EMMALEN AT DAISONVILLE NAF TAF
very honest in shape and construction. There was lots too like on this bitch. I liked that she was very clear in colour and pigment with well set eyes and ears. I would have liked a shorter muzzle to complete the look. Her top line was steady on stack and also on movement. I preferred the overall shortness off body on one and her showmanship
LIMIT BITCH
Super class off bitches with all 4 having something to offer me today with the first 2 bitches that could have changed places
1st LATTER &LATTER
STONEGLAD SHES ON FIRE
Lives up to her name, this bitch was really nice to go over with her having the edge today on showmanship to win this class. Large and feminine head shape with good mouth, excelled in shoulder placement with the broad chest, nice shape to body and nice angles at rear. She stole this class on her overall balance on move
2nd GARRETS
PRIAMBULLS DREAMS OF MAGIC AT MARCHMANOR
More my type of bitch in that she had more bone and substance giving the typical bullmastiff look
She scored on head and had one of the best mouths today. Such power in her neck, well bodied bitch shortness of back and one off the best rear muscled back end. On the move she is so steady and parallel showing powerful reach and drive. Loosing out on first place as 1st performed with more showmanship on the move. A stunning girl who on another day could easily take the 1st spot.
3rd BEAL
EMSUART APHRODITE
OPEN BITCH
Best bitch class of the day without a doubt. 1st to 3rd were all lovely examples and all top quality
1st MYERS &MORGAN
CH PARIS DE L’ARCHE DES LOUPS ANGES AVEC OPTIMUS (Imp France)
What a stunning head this bitch had! talking about being square! She had the most wonderful expression with the darkest of eyes. Another today that had a correct mouth. Well muscled fore chest and good bone in front legs with excellent feet. Enough body length and well ribbed, I really liked her rear end with a good thick tail the reached her hock. She was steady on the move showing good front reach and it complimented in her well muscled and powerful rear. She won this class on her overall look and her head which is one thing that I thought she excelled in. Pleased to award her the CC and BOS
2nd COLLIASS
ROSCOS SARAHAH OF OLDWELL
I thought when I seen her she was going to be my class winner. I thought she is so typical of a lovely bullmastiff bitch. On examination I thought that I would have preferred her head to be a little larger to compliment her overall appearance. In saying that she still had a correct head and super width to her jaw. Another bitch that excelled in body condition on the move she was sound showing that she is well muscled. I thought that she was a lovely bitch and I’m sure she will get her title but on today’s performance I just preferred the overall head size of the winner. Will watch her with interest
3rd LINDLEY
CH HYERDUNSCAR THE BIG TEASE JW IR J CH CJW16
Another one I didn’t critique but must mention as I see she is the mother to my RBCC and BPIB Winner. A prolific Multiple Cc winning bitch that has gone on to produce hopefully a lovely CH I have admired this bitch in the past and was lovely too see her today and finally get to judge. Unlucky to meet the younger girls today but still a worthy CH
