Thank you for a lovely entry, it was a thrill to award my first set of CC’s in Golden Retrievers and being the first show post lockdown it was made even more special, it was great to be back! I had a lovely entry and in most classes I found what I was looking for, unbeknown to me, until I saw the catalogue, a number of the principal winners came from the same kennel.
In the junior, yearling and graduate classes the effects of no shows for 18 months were clear, many dogs were a little unsure when being gone over, so I gave the exhibits the benefits of the doubt.
My principal winners came from the postgraduate class with the DCC being awarded to THORNYWAIT SPACE COWBOY AT LOVISSA JW and the RCC to OUSEVALE TOBERMORY. Best Puppy Dog was QUAKERHALL MASTER MARINER AT BLUEWATERS. Best Junior dog was PUTJADE PUSH THE BUTTON. Best veteran dog SH CH THORNYWAIT CRACKERJACK AT LOVISSA and Best Special Beginners dog WYLLOH LOST IN TRANSLATION.
My co-judge Pat Tuck and I agreed on all the joint awards, BOB going to the young dog THORNYWAIT SPACE COWBOY AT LOVISSA JW in a very close decision with the bitch. BOS went to CH DRUMKILTY HIBERNIA, who I thought was beautiful but was just a little tired on the last run round so we agreed to send the dog forward to the group. Best Puppy was the very charming CHERRYGOLD STORYTELLER who I thought was lovely, good luck with her in the future. Best Veteran went to the dog SH CH THORNYWAIT CRACKERJACK AT LOVISSA, Best Junior went to the Bitch PANDREFT QUITE A MELODY and Best Special Beginners was awarded to WYLLOH LOST IN TRANSLATION.
The only two general comments I would make are: Firstly, please watch your fronts. I found a number with short upper arms which gave a rather unbalance outline and an untidy front action. The other concern was that some were a little straight in front and over angulated behind, while this can look flashy, they did not have the reach and drive that is called for in the standard.

1ST BALSAMINA BEACHCOMBER AT DARTHILL (MISS C BAWDEN)
Smart pale boy, 7 months old and not over done in any way, very clean in outline. Masculine in head, good balanced proportions. Decent neck and front assembly. Standing on well boned legs and neat feet. Good depth to chest for his age and ribs springing nicely. Quarters developing well. Puppyish on the move today but he will soon find his feet.
2ND THORNYWAIT SAVE MY SPACE AT LOVISSA (MRS M C & MRS L LOVEROCK & WALDRON-SMITH)
Just six months and very much a baby in the class but lots to like about him. Head developing as it should, clean neck into well set shoulders. Body of good proportions and standing on good legs and feet. Quarters are well made with the correct amount of angulation. Needs to find his feet on the move and once he does, he should do well.

1ST QUAKERHALL MASTER MARINER AT BLUEWATERS (MRS J WILD)
I thought this a very smart young dog put together well with good balanced angles fore and aft. His headpiece is developing nicely and has correct proportion, correct eye shape to give an appealing expression. Decent front assembly, strong neck, standing on well boned legs and tight feet. Body of good proportions with ribs springing nicely. Quarters well made, moderate bend of stifle. Moved out well, good in profile. Hope he has done his growing already as I wouldn’t want much more of him. A promising puppy who should do well Best Puppy Dog.
2ND IPCRESS ORACLE (MR M R & MRS S BROWN)
Upstanding dog with a good outline. He has a pleasing masculine head with a clean reach of neck. Decent front assembly and good overall body proportions, ribs well sprung and good length and strength to loin. Quarters well made with a good bend of stifle. Coat was in good condition, would just have liked a little more finish. Movement was good but not as positive as the winner today.

1ST PUTJADE PUSH THE BUTTON (S A & S LOACH & ZUBAIR)
I really liked this young man and kept him in for consideration in the challenge. 13 months old and developing in all the right ways. Presents a picture on the stack with that balanced outline that I was looking for. Super head piece with a masculine expression with a lovely dark eye. Clean neck in to well set shoulders, standing on straight legs with correct bone. Shoulders correctly placed with good elbows. Body of correct proportions, ribs springing nicely, level topline. Quarters well made with stifles well bent. On the move he just came alive and won the class with ease, accurate fore and aft and in profile. One whose career I will follow with interest.
2ND KULAWAND SKYWALKER (MR & MRS R S & MRS P LANE & LANE-RIDYARD)
Good outline on this chap. Head is pleasing. Decent front assembly on him, shoulders well placed, and an adequate reach of neck. Good overall body proportions, excellent spring of rib and length of loin. Would have liked a better finish to his croup. Quarters well made with a good bend of stifle. Coat was in good condition. Movement was positive and with drive, not as tidy as the winner as he came towards me.

1ST BERRYMEADE COEUR BLIMEY AT BUSHEYHALL (K J WILLIAMS)
I liked this young man. His head is pleasing, masculine with a good length of foreface to give a pleasing expression. Good overall proportions, balanced with quarters well made, stifles well bent. On the move this boy came alive, best action in this class. On the stack he had a habit of sinking into his shoulders and losing his shape which nearly cost him the class. Please practice with him as he is a really nice type of dog.

1ST LAMYATE ACER AT AMBERLAND (MRS P ARNOLD)
Smart dog with a good outline. He has a pleasing masculine head with a clean reach of neck. Decent front assembly and good overall body proportions, ribs well sprung and good length and strength to loin. Quarters well made with a good bend of stifle. Coat was in good condition. Movement was positive and with drive.
2ND LADY SUE COME TOGETHER AT STRETTONHILL (IMP HRV) (MISS C & MR M TAYLOR & TENN)
Another well-made dog just not as developed as the winner but giving away a lot in age. Pleasing head shape with a kind eye, giving a masculine expression. He has a decent front assembly with shoulders well placed. Well boned legs and tight feet. Body proportion correct giving a balanced shape. Good quarters and bend of stifle. Moved out well.
3RD FENPINQUE MAGNUM OPUS AT MOLESTREAM JW (MRS S NORRIS)
Post Graduate - Dog

This class gave me the biggest headache of the day, some really young top-class boys in here and it was a thrill to judge. The final placings were very much on performance on the day, the first three could easily have taken top spot and I will expect to watch them tussle with each other for placings over the coming shows.
1ST THORNYWAIT SPACE COWBOY AT LOVISSA JW (MRS M C & MRS L LOVEROCK & WALDRON-SMITH)
He came in with attitude, his handler struggled with him initially, but he got his act together and just flowed round the ring with the required powerful gait. Straight fore and aft, he had the best footfall of the day. I liked his overall shape and size, not over done or over angulated in any way. Clean neck into a well laid shoulder. Great bone on straight legs and super feet. Body of good proportions, short coupled with ribs well sprung, top line level. Quarters well developed with stifles well bent. Coat in good condition with good feathering. In the challenge he was in my mind, but I was conscious that he was still young, but he just constantly captured my attention and the final run off clinched the CC for him. His first, I wish him well in the search for the other two tickets.
2ND OUSEVALE TOBERMORY JW (MRS CLARKE-GEAR)
Not a big one but totally in balance, head is very appealing, not over done in any way. He has a clean neck into well angulated shoulders. Stands on well boned legs, good depth of chest, ribs are well sprung, and he has a firm loin giving a level topline. Quarters well angulated with stifles well bent. Coat in lovely condition. Moved out well, with a good action in profile, plenty of drive, just a tad untidy as he came towards me, which cost him the top spot. Called him back in to the challenge and put in a super performance and took the RCC. As with the winner of the class, I think he has a bright future ahead of him.
3RD SANSUE KEEP THE MAGIC JW (MRS S, MR J W I & MRS H BIRKIN GREEN & GRIPTON)
I must also mention this chap who pushed the first and second very hard, but just wouldn’t settle on the move today.

1ST THORNYWAIT FULL MONTY AT TREBETTYN (J WILLIAMS)
At first walk round the ring, I didn’t notice this dog but when I got my hands on him, he handled so well. This chap is now rising four years, and it transpired he won well under me as a youngster. I admit I didn’t recognise him but clearly, he still impressed. Very striking in outline, His head is pleasing, a good shape and balanced. Neck muscular, with a good front assembly. He stands on well boned legs with neat feet. Ribs well sprung and correct length of loin. Quarters well developed with stifles well bent. On the move, he needs to tidy up his front action but drove from the rear and had a super side gate. He was so very close for top honours today and if he carries on in this form, I don’t think that they will be too far off.
2ND LAMANCHA MAGICAL MOMENTS JW (MISS M MCDONALD)
Very different style of dog to the winner, 4 years old, not a big one but balanced. Presents a very striking outline on the stack which took my attention. His head is masculine, with a kind eye. Clean reach of neck, decent front assembly, would have like a little more return of upper arm. Good depth to his chest, stands on well boned legs. Good through the body, ribs well sprung and held his topline well. Super rear on him, good angles and stifles well bent. Moved out well but not quite the front extension of the winner, which cost him the class.

1ST SH CH THORNYWAIT SAN VALENTINO JW SHCM (MR A TRINDER)
This dog was BIS under me when I judged the Southern club show a few years back, when he was a yearling. Since then, I have followed his career with interest as he won his title and many top awards. As he entered the ring, I saw him as the mature adult. I still like him very much. His head has refined and is pleasing and masculine. Muscular neck which led into well laid shoulders, stands on well boned legs and good feet. Body of good proportions, ribs well sprung with good depth. For my taste he was carrying a little more weight that I liked. Super coat which was in excellent condition. Well-made quarters with stifles well bent. He moved out with accuracy in his footfall and had enough drive to take the class. In the challenge he just threw in the towel which was a shame.
2ND PUTJADE PAY THE PIPER AT MALENBROOK JW (MR S E & MRS H I MALE)
This chap won puppy dog under me at the same Southern Club show and he has really come along. He has dropped into his angles and has got that masculinity that he lacked before. Headpiece is well developed with good finish, clean neck into a decent front assembly, body of good proportions, ribs have a good spring on them. Quarters well developed. Moved out well with a good profile action. Gave a lot away in maturity to the winner and I thought needed a bit more finish, on that point stood second.
3RD JAYMARDY INDIGO PACIFIC JW (MRS J GERHOLD)
Special Beginners - Dog

1ST WYLLOH LOST IN TRANSLATION (MRS S RILEY)
Smart dog that stood fourth in the competitive maiden class. Lots to like about him, just 14 months. He has a super clean outline and good overall balance. Pleasing head and expression, clean neck in to well set shoulders, I would have just liked a shade more return of upper arm. Good overall body proportions and quarters well made with a good bend of stifle. Best mover in the class, good action and drive.
2ND HAYDENGOLD TIME TO SHINE FOR SUNANDAIR (MISS P ARCHER)
Stood third in the junior class. Just over fifteen months and progressing in the right direction. Pleasing outline on the stack, expression masculine. He has a good front on him with a decent lay back of shoulder, stands on well boned legs. Ribs springing nicely and firm loin, holds a good level topline. Well made quarters. Moved out well, just a tad untidy as he came towards me today and a little proud of his tail.

1ST SH CH THORNYWAIT CRACKERJACK AT LOVISSA (MRS M C LOVEROCK)
What a grand chap this boy was, certainly enjoining his day out. He has a super head piece, well-proportioned with a lovely kind eye. Strong neck, a decent front assembly with good depth to his chest, just a shade long in loin. Stands on well boned legs and neat feet. Ribs well sprung and quarters well developed with well bent stifles. Moved well in profile with drive, just flagged a little in the challenge. Delighted, with my co-judges agreement, to award him Best Veteran.
2ND SH CH RAMCHAINE FABULICIOUS JW SHCM (IMP NLD) (MRS J GERHOLD)
I judged this chap as a youngster and he did well under me then, very happy to see him here again today and that he has his title. He is a pale boy with a masculine head and expression. Clean in neck and a decent front assembly. Ribs well sprung and firm though the loin, which gave a level top line. Moderately angulated quarters. He had drive on the move, just wasn’t as accurate as the winner in rear movement today.

1st SYLAHRA SUPER MOON (MISS T & MISS J L WEEKS & BROWN)
Stood alone in the class, 23 months old chap who was fifth in the junior class. Pleasing head shape with a kind eye giving a masculine expression. He has an OK front assembly, would like a little more lay back of shoulder. Well boned legs and tight feet. Body proportion correct giving a balanced shape. Well-made quarters with a super bend of stifle. Moved out well.
