Cotswold & Wyevern Labrador Retriever Club
Cotswold and Wyevern Labrador Retrievers Club
Open Show
29th February 2020
It was indeed an absolute pleasure to judge this Club’s show and I would like to thank the committee for the very kind invitation. A new venture for the club as the venue share with Mid-Western Gundog Club seemed to work very well and I hope that both clubs benefitted. I was delighted with the entry and it gave me much to think about in many of the classes. Sportsmanship was of the highest and must be congratulated.
Quality was prevalent throughout and I found myself splitting hairs on more than one occasion. I was delighted to note that excessive fat was in the minority with may fit, firm dogs being shown.
All in all, a very enjoyable day.
Dogs
Minor Puppy
1: Carpanini’s CARPENNY POLDARK, delightful black baby with everything in the right place. I liked his expression, being soft and intelligent. To go over, he has everything in the right place. Super bone and feet. His coat is super, and he has a great tail. On the move he is precise and covers the ground. Liked him a lot and he has a future.
2. Metcalfe’s BAILEYKIN SMARTIEPANTS FOR BAILEYDALE, 7-month-old yellow baby who was very close up. His outline in profile is super as his angulation is totally balanced. Another with a super head and expression, sound bone but just needs to firm up in foot. On the move he is sound, precise and keeps a strong topline. Excellent coat and tail. Liked him too
3: Wiles’ MAMBRINOS ANGUS AT RICHBOURNE
Puppy
1: Bailiss’ TISSALIAN HI CHAPERAL, 10-month-old yellow with the most breathtaking shape in profile. His head is masculine but not over done with the softest of expressions. Won the class today on front as he has the perfect angulation of shoulder. Barrel ribbed and in good coat. Super tail. Moved well in profile but could possibly benefit from being moved a tad quicker perhaps. Champion in the making for sure BPIS
2: Coode’s WARRINGAH’S THE BLUFF JW, 10-month-old black who scores in head and expression. Solid topline and well ribbed. He has the most fantastic tail too. His coat is exceptional. Looks good in profile but he was a tiny bit erratic coming towards me today and this is what cost him. Sound bone and in excellent condition.
Junior
1: Lesley’s SLEDDARWOOD SAKO FLYER OVER STEELEIGH, yellow boy all male and in good condition. Pleases in head and expression, won the class on front and feet. Moved well in profile and had slightly more forward reach than 2. Slightly longer cast but well angulated
2; Perkins’ CARROMER TEGULIA BY KEENINSPIRES, Yellow with a gorgeous head and expression. In profile he has a completely balanced outline and is shorter coupled than the winner. He has good bone and a firm topline and his coat is good. Not quite the forward reach of the winner today and I would have preferred a more compact foot. But he’s got a lot to like about him and he was extremely well handled.
Yearling
1: Hodge’s NAIKEN ELITE ENVOY JW IR JUN CH, gorgeous chocolate boy. His balance is superb. The most delightful head and the softest of expressions. Strong neck into firm topline and well-set correct tail. Coat of excellent texture . Moves on the right track with an easy gait covering the ground and could keep going all day without tiring. Really rate him and he has a title in front of him without doubt, in the challenge he continued to impress me and on that final go around, he really stepped up a gear to be rewarded with RBD over the superb yellow Ch dog.
2: Lesley’s SLEDDARWOOD SAKO FLYER OVER STEELEIGH
3: Meredith’s TWEEDLEDUM OFF THE RECORD
Graduate
1: Chapman’s DAISYPATCH JELLY TOT JW, yellow boy with a very pleasing outline in profile. Short coupled and strong topline. Strong neck of decent length. Pleases in head and expression. Good layback of shoulder but would possibly prefer just a tad more return of upper arm, which would give him a little more reach in front. Excellent coat and tail. Moves precisely on the out and back but would benefit from just a tad more animation. In super condition.
2: Lesley’s SLEDDARWOOD SAKO FLYER OVER STEELEIGH
3: Perkins’ CARROMER TEGULIA BY KEENINSPIRES,
Post Graduate
1; King’s LINTHWAITE EXCALIBUR JW, yellow boy with a delightful outline in profile and a really pleasing head and expression. Strong neck, firm topline and well-set tail. Liked his front assembly and this is what clinched him the class. Balanced behind and moved out well. Good coat and tail.
2: Stewart’s STREAMANDA ARAMIS, yellow who also scores in outline, but he was little distracted and on his toes today. Would prefer a more padded foot but with his mind elsewhere, this didn’t help this. Pleases for head and soft expression. Good topline and coat ok. On the move he was just a tad erratic, but with his lack of concentration, this was to be expected. He’ll have better days I’m sure.
Limit
1: Hodge’s NAIKEN EAST MEETS WEST, black boy, fully mature and in the most fantastic coat. His head is masculine, and he has the softest of expressions. Strong neck in to firm topline leading to a fabulous tail. Good to go over being well angulated and well ribbed. He moves with an easy stride and keeps his outline. Good one.
2: Britton’s LLANSTINNAN LOUIS LEWIS BOWSTONES, black boy who, if honest, I possibly preferred his head shape to the winner, and he has a beautiful expression. Balanced in outline and a firm topline. Not quite the coat or tail of the winner but I can see them changing on another day. Moved out well in profile.
3: Jury’s TIBBLESTONE SEA SALT
Open
1: Jayes and Casey’s SANDLYLANDS HIT THE ROAD, yellow who has the most breathtaking outline in profile. His head and expression are to die for. Strong neck, firm topline and well-set tail which is used all the time. Big ribbed and beautifully angulated. Still young but he totally fills the eye and he is presented superbly. It was his compactness in loin and precision going away from me that clinched it for him today. Really top-class Lab who will title with ease and this is not the last we’ve heard of this one. Loved him. BD & BIS
2: Wiles’ SH CH RICHBOURNE LONDONER, another absolutely beautiful yellow boy who also has the most beautiful head and expression. His neck and front are super, strong topline and well ribbed. Superb coat and tail. Just a tad erratic going away from me today and this is where it cost him. But a really beautiful dog who will change places on another day and I will not argue with that. The most delightful temperament
Veteran
1: Stewart’s SH CH STEAMANDA TO KNOTCH, 10-year-old yellow in the most fantastic coat and condition and not looking his age at all. On the move he can show some of the youngsters how it should be done, and he is a real credit to his owner. Pleases very much for outline and balance. Liked his head and soft expression, strong topline and ever wagging tail. In great muscle and well ribbed. Decent one indeed. BVIS
Bitches
Minor Puppy
1: Metcalfe’s BAILEYKIN BARLEY SUGAR FOR BAILEYDALE, very pretty 7-month-old yellow with a gorgeous head and expression. Completely balanced in outline, she is beautifully angulated and muscled. Her coat is super, and she has a great tail. Strong in neck, firm topline and well ribbed. Moved out well in profile and has precision on the out and back, nice prospect. BMPIS
2: Carpanini’s CARPENNY BERRY, 7-month-old black who scores very much for type and honesty. She too has complete balance in outline and has a fabulous coat. So good to go over, just feel she needs to finish in head and then she’ll be hard to pass. On the move she is totally sound.
3: Lesley’s STEELEIGH LOVER AFFAIR
Puppy
1: Harvey-Major’s LINJOR SANSA, dark yellow girl with a very pleasing outline. Sweet head and expression, strong neck and well-set tail. Excellent coat . To go over she has everything in the right place and won the class today on front and feet. Moved out well and keeps an outline in profile.
2: Bailiss’ TISSALIAN HI CLASS, yellow girl with the most delightful head and the sweetest of expressions. In profile, there is very little to change and she screams type. Her topline is strong and she is in decent coat. Just felt she needs to tighten in front and feet as she was a tad erratic coming towards me today and this is what cost her. However, with maturity I can predict a title in front of her I’m sure.
3: Smith’s RUDIDALE LUCKY BUG
Junior
1:Braddon’s TRENDLEWOOD BACK TO BLACK, very decent black girl with the most pleasing outline. She has a pretty head and expression, flowing lines and strong neck into topline. Superb in angulation and this shows in her movement where she has a long and easy stride. In good coat and correct tail. Very nice bitch that I liked enormously.
2: King’s LINTHWAITE SAFFRON, pretty yellow with a delightful head and expression. In good coat. Compact and strong in topline. Just felt she didn’t quite have the precision out and back of the winner today, but a typy young bitch.
3: Lesley’s SLEDDARWOOD TIKKA TAKE AIM AT STEELEIGH
Yearling
1: Bailiss’ TISSALIAN HI SOCIETY JW, absolutely beautiful yellow bitch . Her head and expression are divine as you can look into her soul. She has a strong neck which flows into superb front assembly and firm topline. Superb coat and tail. She is well let down behind and is well muscled. On the move she has reach, drive and a free and easy gait. Superb Labrador bitch with an assured future ahead of her. Simply loved her BB & RBIS
2: Hodge’s NAIKEN ETOILE, chocolate bitch with so much to like. Pretty head and expression and she screams femininity yet retains substance. Super for neck and front, compact and she is well angulated. On the move she covers a lot of ground with an easy and efficient stride. Very close up today, it was just the sheer beauty of the winner’s expression that swung it for me. Champion quality without doubt.
3: Hodge & Lapper’s NAIKEN EVITA
Novice
1: Miles’ LLANSTINAN BITW BACH, 11-month-old black with lots to like. Pretty head and expression, balanced in outline and strong topline. Excellent coat and tail. Just need to strengthen in front and she’ll be away. Moved out well in profile.
2: King’s LINTHWAITE SAFFRON
3: Stewart & Coode’s WARRINGHAH’S ORA BANDA WITH STEAMANDA
Graduate
1: Braddon’s TRENDLEWOOD SIMPLY THE BEST JW, beautiful yellow bitch just about holding onto her coat. Her head is gorgeous with the softest of expressions. Totally balanced in outline and angulation. On the move she covers the ground and keeps her topline with a perfect tail carriage. Champion quality for sure. RBB
2: Wiles’ TRENDLEWOOD PRIVATE DANCER AT RICHBOURNE, another very beautiful yellow who is so similar to the winner but then looking at her breeding I can see why. She was a complete nightmare for her patient handler and not easy to go over as she just wouldn’t keep still and so determined to throw any chance she had away. However, if she can start to keep 4 feet on the ground, she can easily carry a title .
3: Chapman’s DAISYPATCH DOLLY MIXTURE
Post Graduate
1: Jayes and Casey’s SANDLYLANDS HIGH TIME, beautiful yellow bitch with a classic head and expression. Complete balance in angulation. She has a good neck , well laid shoulder and strong, firm topline. In good coat. On the move she excels where she has reach, drive and an ease of stride. Champion quality for sure. In the challenge she tended to slope in topline just slightly and this cost her today.
2: Carpanini’s CARPENNY PHILLY, another beautiful bitch, this time black. Her outline is fabulous, just a smidge longer cast than the winner. Her head and expression are absolute beautiful, in super coat and completely balanced to go over. On the move she is sound and here was another example of those that could easily change places on another day. Another with champion written all over her
3: Minchella’a ABBEYSTEAD HOPE
Limit
1: Miles’ LLANSTINAN MACAROON, interesting class. This bitch won the class on her classic outline and femininity. She pleases for head and expression and has a great neck and topline. Balanced in outline, she moves on the right track but could just have a bit more oomph about her.
2: King’s LINTHWAITE LOUISIANA JW, another yellow who is in superb coat and condition. On the move she moves out with enthusiasm but just was a tad erratic coming towards me. Head shape good but I just felt she was not as feminine as the winner.
3: Smith’s RUDIDALE STORY TELLER
Open
1: Hodge’s SH CH NAIKEN DANCE RHYTHM JW IR JUN CH, delightful black bitch with a super outline. Super head and sweet expression, strong neck, firm topline and well-set tail. Excellent front assembly and balanced behind. Moves out with an easy stride. In excellent coat. Liked her very much
2: Britton’s BOWSTINES POLKA, yellow bitch with the sweetest of expressions, another who is balanced in outline. Just lost her topline slightly today in profile on the move and she was not in her best dress, which was a shame.
3: King’s MIKMAQLABS CHEYENNE
Veteran
1: Braddon’s TRENDLEWOOD LOVE CHRONICLE, 10-year-old yellow in full coat. Please very much for type and she has the sweetest of expressions. Delightful outline and sound for her age. A credit.
Brace
1:Boulden’s pair
2: Jenkins’ pair
both very well-matched pairs. It was the type of the winners that swung it their way.
