Worcester & Malvern Canine Society Open Show

11th January 2020

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

I offer my very sincere thanks to the Committee and Officers of Worcester & Malvern Canine Society for inviting me to judge our beloved breed and for the very warm welcome that I received throughout the day. Thanks very much to Karen and Pat who stewarded super efficiently and looked after me so well on the day, keeping everything moving effortlessly. I am very humbled by the entry for this show in terms of quantity, and most importantly, quality. I had CC and RCC winners, a champion dog and absolute beginner pups to go over and I thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to do so. There were some very close decisions today made on the finest of margins. As for teeth, there were no major faults which is pleasing to note. In terms of numbers the Stafford entry was second only to Labradors and I am delighted to note that my Best of Breed today went on to take Group 3 in the Terrier Group and that my Best Puppy took Terrier Puppy Group 3 which says a lot for the high quality in the Staffords on show today. Congratulations!

Puppy Dog/Bitch (9, 2) Some promising young Staffords here with various stages of maturity, some giving 6 months away which is a lot at this stage of development.

1st Powerpack Tam O’Shanter; Black brindle with a white foot and white sock. This young boy is simply excellent. He has a strong head of depth and width with perfectly set rose ears and round, dark eyes giving a piercing expression. His muzzle balances his head perfectly and houses a correct scissor bite with big, gleaming white teeth. Great muscle mass for his age is apparent due to his level of fitness and close, short and gleaming coat. Plenty of lift to his straight front with his brisket to elbow. His rib is developing nicely and leads into a well tucked up loin; he has a well-muscled back end with excellent angulations enabling him to drive along on the move and he held his level topline throughout. With strong pasterns and neat feet, he was up on his toes showing himself off the whole time.

2nd Hamason To Be Frank at Karjaydan; Red with white chest and a black mask. A standard sized boy with a broad chest, good depth of brisket and short, strong neck. His head is developing nicely with round, dark eyes giving a pleasing expression. All is correct in his mouth. He is close coupled with well-developed muscle and plenty of bone. Moved well and maintained his level topline, driving from his well angled and strong hind quarters.

Junior Dog/Bitch (7, 1)

1st Powerpack Tam O’Shanter (see 1st Puppy).

2nd Gazstaffs Black Velvet at Skyestaff; Black brindle bitch of standard size in very fit condition. Her head is strong enough but retains femininity and with well-set rose ears and round, dark eyes. Clean in the muzzle with a scissor bite and gleaming white teeth. She has a short back displaying a level topline, straight front and good angulations allowing good movement. Her level topline was maintained as she moved along. She nicked 2nd place over 3 (her brother, as it turns out, and a seriously nice, quality dog) due to the hardness of her muscle, particularly through her hindquarters.

Post Graduate Dog/Bitch (4, 0)

1st Boldstock Gee Tar Man at Sharmara; Black brindle dog with white toes. Of standard height and in super fit condition, he has a strong, well-shaped head with well-set rose ears and round, dark eyes. His clean muzzle houses a correct scissor bite with big white canines set in a strong underjaw. Plenty of nasal capacity. With a straight front, barrel rib and close coupling, his condition and muscle mass is shown beautifully by his short and gleaming coat. His powerful and well angled rear quarters drove him along the mat, moving very well indeed and maintaining his level topline.

2nd Powerpack Alura Finvarra JW; Standard sized black brindle bitch with a beautifully shaped feminine head and very clean muzzle with tight lips. Fitness and good, firm muscle tone in evidence throughout. Her straight front has the appropriate width to balance her height and her brisket is level with her elbows; plenty of rib. Good angulations and a level topline allow her to move freely.

3rd Elitebull Destiny

Open Dog (4, 0) A class of four super dogs, each of a slightly different type. Tight decisions for placings here.

1st Powerpack Kilgobnet JW; A superb, upstanding and athletically built dog of excellent proportions. He has everything required and absolutely nothing overdone. He was fit, well tucked up in the loin and well-muscled, apparent due to his close, tight coat. In profile, his outline is very pleasing to the eye and he doesn’t disappoint when assessing his virtues hands on. His head is clean as a whistle with tight lips, good eye placement and well set rose ears all giving a very typical expression. Head proportions are excellent, with a strong, purposeful muzzle and a strong underjaw housing a correct scissor bite. He has large, white canines and they are spotlessly clean. Standing on tight, neat feet and strong pasterns he is well off for lift and with plenty of bone. He has ample width of chest and a straight front with a proportionate brisket and rib cage. His strong neck tapers into tight, well placed shoulders and on through to a level topline which he held standing and on the move. Strongly muscled hindquarters drove his movement which was a pleasure to watch. His movement was the best of the day and got him over the line in this class. I would be delighted to have owned or bred this boy, it was my pleasure to award him Best Dog and then Best of Breed. He subsequently went on to Terrier Group 3. Congratulations.

2nd CH Elitebulls Challenger JW; Another upstanding dog and with a powerful head, broad and deep through. Well placed rose ears and round dark eyes give him a piercing expression. He has a scissor bite and large, clean canines housed in a strong underjaw. He was in supremely fit condition from his straight front with deep brisket, along his back to his well tucked loin and strong hindquarters. His short, tight and shining coat showed his muscle mass perfectly. He was perfectly handled and moved well when required. A very worthy champion, it was a pleasure to go over him, thank you for bringing him.

Open Bitch (5, 0)

1st Lackyle Banrion Uasal at Jewelstaff; Standard sized and athletically built black brindle of real quality and with a real spark. She has a feminine head of excellent proportions with an ideal length of muzzle for balance housing a correct scissor bite with big, white canines, spotlessly clean. Dark, round and well set eyes with plenty of fill under them and nicely set rose ears give her a very appealing expression. I really liked this girl a lot. She is so well proportioned throughout with enough length of well boned leg, a straight front with brisket to elbow and well-muscled shoulders. She has ample spring of rib and her short back and well set on tail, which she carried correctly on the move, give her an outline which is very pleasing. She was in fit condition and, when she settled, moved very well maintaining her level topline throughout. This is the bitch that I would have chosen to take home and it was my pleasure to award her Best Bitch and Reserve Best of Breed.

2nd Siriustaff Heart of Glass at Skyestaff; Another standard size black brindle, very similar in type to 1. She also has an athletic construction and was in fit condition with a firmness of muscle. Her head is strong enough and discernibly feminine with a good scissor bite of clean, white teeth. Her well placed eyes and ears give her a typical and pleasing expression. Her pigmentation is spot on. A good front, level topline and strong back end add to her virtues. Her coat was tight and shining. She moved well and maintained her level topline throughout.
