Pug Dog Club

Pug Dog Club – Open Show 1 March 2020

My sincerest thanks to the Pug Dog Club for the invitation to judge their show, it was a great honour and I was very satisfied with the entry and the winners. Overall, I was very pleased with my entry and found, in my main winners, examples of the breed that fit my interpretation of the breed standard perfectly. I have always enjoyed judging pugs and my hope is always to find exhibits that are ‘multum in parvo’ as described by the breed standard.

I had no serious concerns about the health of any of the bitches I judged, all were shown in good condition and their temperaments were wonderful.

Best Bitch was Lunam’s Anzhela Heaven Scent. This bitch fits the breed standard ideally, in fact the first sentence of the standard is a perfect way to describe her “Decidedly square and cobby, it is ‘multum in parvo’ shown in compactness of form, well-knit proportions and hardness of muscle”. She is well balanced and well-constructed, moved with typical pug style, steady and purposeful with a gentle roll in her hindquarters, she was true coming and going. Her head is quite lovely, round and proportionate with a short and square muzzle and round expressive eyes. Level topline with a high set and tightly curled tail. I just loved her and was thrilled to hand her the Best in Show rosette.

Reserve Best Bitch was Swinge & Saffer’s Ragemma Saucy Suzie at Balthazar JW. I judged this bitch when she was a young puppy and was enchanted by her then, she has matured nicely. She is correct for size, cobby and compact, square and balanced. A real dynamo, she owns the ring when she moves using her well angulated hindquarters to drive her forward and in profile her front movement is ideal, putting her legs well forward. She has an ideal head, round and proportionate with a short and square muzzle and well-defined wrinkles and large and dark eyes. With a strong neck, she carried her head proudly. Level topline. She went on to take Reserve Best in Show.

Best Puppy Bitch was Ellis’ Eastonite Saucy Sue. A very classy bitch, thoroughly sound and well-constructed, she commands attention when she stands and moved. Square and well bodied with well-sloped shoulders and level topline. She has a round head with well-defined wrinkle and large, dark eyes. She moves with purpose, maintaining a level topline and has the typical pug roll in her hindquarters. Her tail is high set with a tight curl. I agreed with my co-judge to make her Best Puppy in Show.

Best Veteran was Truelove’s Grosvenorpug’s Peach. Correct for size and shape, she moved reasonably with strong drive from her hindquarters. High set and tightly curled tail. Round head with clearly defined wrinkles and correct pigmentation.
