Boston & District Canine Society

Breed: Irish Red & White Setter

I should like to extend my sincere thanks to the Officers and Committee of Boston & District Canine Society for inviting me to judge at this show.  It was a very enjoyable day and I very much appreciated the opportunity of this appointment to assess some lovely dogs.

I would particularly like to thank the exhibitors of the Irish Red & White Setters for the lovely entry and for trusting me with their dogs – thank you.

Irish Red & White Setter:

Puppy Dog (1):

1ST Mrs A B & Mr S H Catton & Cook, Daithi Shadow Dog With Ferngate TAF, NAF (IMP POL): A dog of 9 months of age – I really did liked this dog who was presented and shown very well. Very good head slightly domed with prominent stop, ears correctly set, square muzzle with dentition that was correct, clean and complete. Strong neck which was slightly arched into well placed shoulders and corresponding return of upper arm, deep chest of good width, good bone all through, well ribbed back, good hindquarters which were used to advantage on the move where he moved soundly and accurately whenever asked. Best Puppy.

Post Graduate Dog (3):

1ST Mrs B Stevens, Corranroo Clooney Of Annagh: Very pleasing overall type of dog and at 4 years of age should now be coming into his best. This dog is extremely well balanced and has good quality bone all through, of good size and proportions. Super head and expression with round eye without haw. Dentition, correct, clean and complete, ears set level and lying close to head, strong muscular neck into excellent forehand assembly, deep chest of good width, well ribbed back, strong loin, muscular hindquarters with well bent stifles, nice feet but nails could have been a little shorter. Moved accurately in all profiles with effortless gait.

2ND Mr M I & Mrs W E Taylor, Laoirebay Monte Carlo: Another very nice dog of good type and quality only losing top honours in this class because of the more natural and free gait of the first exhibit – perhaps the ring size and surface inhibited him and his handler. Slightly taller that the first placed dog but still balanced in all areas, very good head and expression, square muzzle strong underjaw with correct, clean and complete dentition, strong slightly arched neck into good forehand assembly, just could have a fraction more length to upper arm, chest deep and of good width, ribs well sprung, strong loin, powerful hindquarters, nails could be shorter, moved soundly and accurately.

3RD Mr R Mapletoft, Roanjora Tanqueray

Open Dog (6):

1ST Miss T Gardner, SH CH Alanea Game Reserve With Danwish: A dog of 3½ years of age, won a very good class on overall balance and quality all through. Excellent head and expression with correct clean eye. Dentition correct clean and complete, strong underjaw, well placed and set ears, strong neck clearly showing slight arch into powerful forehand assembly, chest of good width and depth with elbows free, well ribbed back into short, strong loin, and powerful hindquarters with well bent stifles. Good feet with nails at optimum length. Moved accurately and effortlessly whenever asked. Best Dog, beaten for Best Of Breed by a truly outstanding bitch.

2ND Mrs M & Miss P Knox & Jakins, Terne Des Coris Qalimero At Coolfin (IMP BEL) JW NJK BJWNL18 AJW18: This dog I found to be very well balanced and free from exaggeration. I liked his head, which was broad and in proportion to his body, clean square muzzle, correct, clean and complete dentition with strong underjaw, strong moderately long neck into well placed shoulders, strong bone all through, deep chest, loin of good length and strong, well muscled hindquarters, stifles well bent, moved well. Reserve Best Dog.

3RD Mrs L R Ward, Cornadore Argyle With Copperwhite (IMP POL)

Special Beginners Dog (1):

1ST Mr R Mapletoft, Roanjora Tanqueray: Sometimes when Judging, one comes across an exhibit that has obvious potential but that potential is not being capitalised upon – this is the case with this dog who proved very difficult to assess to the dog not knowing what was expected of him in a show ring. Masculine head not coarse in any way and kind expression, good stop, dark eyes, ears set level with eyes, correct, clean and complete dentition, neck of moderate length and slightly arched, deep chest of good width with moderately sprung ribs, stifles well bent. Nails need to be shorter to enhance the feet. At best, I can only say that this dog is sound as due to his lack of understanding of ring procedure could not be moved successfully to his full potential. I would urge his owner to ring train him properly so that his potential is not wasted.

Junior Bitch (1):

1ST Mrs L R Ward, Cornadore Bia Becomes Copperwhite (IMP POL): A very pleasing bitch, free from exaggeration, excels in forehand assembly with prominent breastbone. Feminine head and kind expression, good stop, dark eyes, ears set level with eyes, correct, clean and complete dentition, neck of moderate length with slight arch, deep chest of good width with well sprung ribs, strong hindquarters moderate bend of stifle, moved soundly and well.

Post Graduate Bitch (4):

1ST Mrs G O’Connor, Dalcross Dancing Queen With Caispern: A well balanced bitch who was presented in fit muscular condition, very workmanlike in outline and balanced. Balanced head with soft expression and dark eye, dentition correct, clean and complete, strong neck into good forehand assembly, very good depth and width to chest, well ribbed back into strong, wide muscular loin, well bent stifles, moved soundly and accurately. Reserve Best Bitch

2ND Mr N & Mrs S Winterburn, Roanjora Laurent Perrier: A bitch of just 2 years of age who left her full coat behind today. Extremely feminine head and expression, dark eye, well placed ears, dentition correct, clean and complete, good width to chest but chest needs to deepen, correct forehand assembly, strong loin, well bent stifles, moved and shown well.

3RD Mrs R E A Barney, Romaunt Carry On Regardless With Verrami

Open Bitch (5, 1abs):

1ST Mr G & Mrs J J Bayne, SH CH Corranroo Consort: Absolutely outstanding bitch of 3½ years of age. This bitch presented the template that I was looking for with this breed, she is strong, powerful and yet so refined, athletic and feminine. Well balanced head with good stop, correctly set ears, Dentition correct clean and complete, Strong neck of moderate neck and slightly arched into excellent shoulder placement and corresponding return of upper arm, deep chest of good width and well sprung ribs, strong hindquarters and good turn of stifle, not in her full coat. Neat feet. She was accurate both fore, aft and in side profile showing an effortless long gate. Best Bitch and Best Of Breed

2ND Mr R G, Mrs A D & Miss R MCDONALD, Roanjora Montepulciano: An extremely feminine bitch of 3½ years of age. She is well balanced and of a pleasing type but she is marginally fine in bone for me. Balanced feminine head with soft expression, dentition correct clean and complete, neck of good length and clean into well placed shoulder, well ribbed back into strong loin, moderate bend of stifle, neat feet, moved well, accurately and soundly.
