Newfoundlands:

My thanks to the LCCS committee for the invitation to judge and to the Southern Newfoundland Club for supporting the classes. All of the dogs presented had super temperaments, correct coats and there were no loose eyes or excessively jowly lips. What the entry lacked in numbers it made up for in quality.

P (1, 0a). 1. Farrar’s Disoranto Moonlight Shadow At Darkpeak (Imp Pol). A pretty Black bitch only 6½ months old and still in puppy coat. Lovely outgoing friendly temperament and very feminine with correct dentition and dark eyes with no looseness. Good bone for this age and well put together, especially impressive rear angulation with great turn of stifle and a tail of excellent length. Moved well, if a little loose as to be expected in a baby, but is already showing the reach and drive her construction promises. Should do very well. Best Puppy In Breed.

J (3, 2a) 1. Springthorpe’s Sandbears First Class At Millthorpe. Black bitch with white chest marking only 3 days out of Puppy but already with the size, bone and substance of a Yearling and musculature developing well – she is going to finish as a proper-size powerful Newfoundland. Good breadth of muzzle and proportion to skull while remaining feminine, eyes small and dark, clean lips, strong neck, excellent front with plenty of width, well ribbed and good angulation. Moved easily around the ring with a flowing gait. Reserve Best Of Breed.

PG(1, 0a). 1. Hunter’s Bridgestone Knockin It Stiff Of Teamster. Black male coming up to 2 years of age. Strong masculine head with a short broad muzzle, very nice to handle. Excellent bone and substance, good forechest and width throughout. Could do with a little more length in upper arm to level his topline but a good tailset and slope to croup. Movement rather labored but understandable in a densely coated dog in the very hot conditions.

O (3, 0a) 1. Springthorpe’s Ch. Millthorpe Mr Rochester JW ShCM. I was delighted to have the opportunity of going over this Black male, just two years old and already a Champion. Hands-on he didn’t disappoint, a masculine head which was strong but without any coarseness and no excessive stop. Good mouth, small well set eyes and a gentle expression. Good ear set and strong in neck of good length. Beautifully proportioned he looked a picture stacked with balance in head and body. Excellent lay of shoulder, super bone, big well-padded feet, well ribbed and nice slope to croup. Angulation matching front and rear so he moved really well with power and grace even in the testing conditions. A fine animal and excellent representative of the breed, he was my Best Of Breed. Thrilled to see him go on and win the Working Group and then finish the day as Best In Show. 2. Burton’s Vodahond Against All Odds. I first judged this dog as a Puppy and was impressed by his size and substance then. Now 3 years old, he has matured into a quality dog. Good head and mouth with mid-brown eyes and a typical newfie expression. Well boned with good feet, powerful through his withers, nice deep ribs and a good topline. Shown in excellent well-presented coat he moved well and was unlucky to come up against 1. today. 3. Burton ’s Merrybear Freddie Mercury
