Derbyshire Agricultural & Horticultural Society

Derbyshire Agricultural & Horticultural Society 23rd June, 2019.

I was delighted to be invited to judge at my local County Show and would like to congratulate Paul & Yvonne Bullivant on their team for ‘rescuing’ this traditional Dog Section Open Show. We had lovely large rings and despite the very best efforts the grass was a little long and very spiky which many of the Toy Dogs did not enjoy. I decided that the condition of the rings under-foot was the same for everyone and therefore those that coped the best on the move had an advantage today.

I hope the exhibitors who had entered under Philip and Caroline were not too disappointed with their judge changes – I wish both a speedy recovery and have total empathy for Phil having had disc problems myself in the past and saw the agony in his face at Blackpool – hope you both get well soon.

Pugs

Thank you for such a great entry both numerically and in the depth of quality. There are a number of Puppies/Juniors entered today that will undoubtedly win CC’s …….. if they have not already !!

P (7,3) 1st Hitchcock’s Bobitch Midnight In Georgia. Right out of the top draw and was not going to let a bit of prickly grass stop her from showing her socks off. She has the most beautiful head and expression with very balanced features. Width right through from her underjaw to her large dark round eyes and her ears which were small and perfectly set. I loved her soft expression and she was so attentive to both handler and judge…in fact she was positively flirting with the judge. Really did not put a foot wrong – so sound away and back showing typical, slight un-exaggerated roll as goes away. Absolutely loved her size and shape; so square and so compact. Front legs set right under her body and forechest developing well. Plenty of bone for her size. Very short, soft coat with neat, tight curl.  BOB & BPIB. 2nd Attwood’s Taftazini Ivalace. Another cracker a few months younger and already such a show off. Large round head with width all through and perfect unexaggerated finish to forehead. Large round eyes and a focussed expression. Width to her underjaw and super nose with open nostril. Loved the slight crest to her neck. Compact in body and in ideal body condition for age. Moved really well and sound away and back. Just missed out on top honours as I just felt the RBOB to have a little more squareness in overall body shape to match the BOB winner.

J (5,2) 1stLunam’s Anzhela Heaven Scent. Instantly caught my eye for her cobby, square body. Her head has beautifully proportioned features with good width through and the softest of expressions. Would like her ears just a fraction smaller if being picky but set just right. Nose in proportion and open nostril. Slight arch to her neck and well laid shoulders. Very good muscle tone and looked fit and a picture of health. Super soft short coat and tight curl. RBOB. 2nd McGarry’s Paradiz Ronaldo Toy Story. Liked the size and shape of his head which had good width through. Would like a little more finish of forehead wrinkle and I hope the nose roll does not develop any further. Large dark round eye and neat ears. Cobby and square in body with a super arch to his neck which shows his overall shape to advantage. Has a tendency to just turn his front feet out. Moved confidently.

PG (8,3) 1st Farnsworth’s Taftazini Nepalensis. Litter brother to 2nd in Puppy and they are certainly of a type – what an exciting pair and not surprised I like them when I see the way they are bred. Loved his large round head in perfect proportion to his body. Wide underjaw. Dark round eyes set well apart giving typical expression; could be just a fraction larger for ideal. Small neat ears. Wrinkle definition just right and neat unexaggerated nose roll. Slight arch to neck. Well developed forequarters with legs set well under the body and well laid shoulders. Compact in body and superb muscle tone and overall condition.  2nd Hitchcock’s Bobitch Cheer Up Sleepy Jean JW. Built on smaller lines but don’t be deceived. She is so compact and square in body and does not carry an ounce of fat. Rock hard in body and stands so four square. I guess she could have a fraction more bone but everything looks in proportion for her size. Very typical with round head with a soft expression and small neat button ear. Just the right amount of forehead wrinkle. Soft short coat. Did not move as positively as the winner today.

O (6,3) 1st Bobitch Daisy Duke JW ShCM. A bitch I have admired before and once again appreciated her many virtues. An ideal size and so well balanced overall. She has a special relationship with her handler. A beautiful head with width through and in proportion. Very square and cobby and in ideal body condition. Neat, tight curl. Moved really soundly and love her slight crest of neck and head carriage. Very sound. Not as solicitous today as when I Iast judged her – clearly just giving her ‘upstart’ of a kennel mate a chance. 2nd Taylor’s Taysace Amethyst Gem. Another with a typical head to admire. Soft expression with large dark round eyes and nose to balance with open nostril. Very good width of underjaw. Just right amount of wrinkle and small well set ears. Cobby in body and in fit condition. Just not quite as tidy coming towards today.

Affenpinscher

J (3,0) Always difficult when no puppy class and here we had a 17 month old bitch versus a really promising and very confident 9  month old dog puppy. 1st Johnson’s Carmichan Catcha Star. A proper chunky monkey. Loved her head proportions with her domed forehead, defined stop and good turn up, tight lip and broad lower jaw. Ears small and set high. Short neck and compact in body with ribs well sprung. Coat well developed and harsh texture. Moved positively and coped well with the ground conditions showing lift in front. BOB. 2nd Dowsett & Jackson’s Avantgarde Italys Secret with Tteswood. What an exciting puppy and already quite the show man. His head is going to be quite special once fully mature. Already has exactly the right proportions with his dark sparkling eyes and nose making desired equilateral triangle. Back short and compact overall. Like the winner he coped well in the long sharp grass and moved soundly with lift in front. Coat still developing but already harsh texture evident. Loved his personality. BPIB.

PG (2,0) 1st Johnson’s Carmichan Catcha Star. 2nd Wiggins’ Capricho Schwarz Liebe. A very neat little typey package who lacked a little confidence with her ‘new’ yet very sympathetic handler. Built on smaller lines and with finer bone than the winner so not as sturdy in appearance. She was sound on the move and steps high coping well but kept dropping her tail. She has a lovely head with equilateral features and a cheeky expression and super high set, neat ears especially on the move. Lacking a little in ‘shaggy coat’ yet still of harsh texture.

O (3,0) 1st Wiggins’ Scapafield Schwarz Odyssey. Makes a very good overall shape both stood and on the move. Just longer than height at withers so compact in body and of sturdy appearance. Scores in head with small neat high set ears, dark eyes of good size and balanced to nose. He has a beautiful turned up chin with really attractive finish to lips and wide underjaw crating that monkey like expression. Coat developing well and of correct harsh texture. Good high stepping action but a little out at elbow coming towards. RBOB.2nd Capricho Schwarz Libelle. Another of smaller build yet balanced overall and features all in proportion. Very attractive head and proper monkey-esque expression; clearly a real character. Short in back and croup falls slightly to correct tail set which as carried well on the move. Rough coat of harsh texture. Really strutted her stuff but preferred stature of winner.

Japanese Chins

P (2,0) 1st Rooney & Green’s Littletigers Innuendo with Jaschin. Outgoing puppy with perfect symmetrical markings. Like his expression and dark eye which were set wide apart. Large black nose with open nostril. Ears set high. Moved with purpose coping well with the grass and showing good strength of hock. Coat developing very well for age, immaculately clean and silky in texture. Could be a fraction more compact in body for ideal. BOB & BPIB. 2nd Allock’s Littletigers I Send With Love to Sleepyhollow. Litter sister to the winner who oozes breed type, is ideally marked and has a fabulous personality. A beautiful head with a typical astonished look and an aristocratic (or should that be precocious) air. Compact in body with high set tail carried over her back. Coat not quite as developed as the winner and she decided she would prefer a bowling green lawn to a farmers field and preferring to stand firm, refuse to move and wag her tail !!

AV NSC Toy

P (5,2) 1st Stading’s Yorkshire Terrier Stadmeyer Rolybeth Talizea. Very promising puppy who coped with the conditions under foot with ease. Alert expression, small dark eye and high set ears. Elegant neck and well-laid shoulders. Level top line and tail set high. Cold to touch silky coat with colour developing just right and rich tan in the right places. Moved confidently and made a balanced picture stood and on the move. Best Av NSC Toy Puppy. 2nd Suggit’s Griffon Bruxellois Aptrick Primavera Fresia. Red rough Griffon. Attractive head with width to skull and very neat well set ears. Short wide muzzle and neat lips. Coat well developed and of course texture. Just a little longer than ideal in body. Very good tail set at right angles to topline. Moved with drive and sound away.

J (2,0) 1st Gullon’s Griffon Bruxellois Barnfall Sunshine. So cobby and short in back with super tail set creating a typical square outline. Well sprung ribs and sturdy appearance looking heavy for size. Monkey expression with dark eye and nose with open nostril.  2nd Suggit’s Griffon Bruxellois Aptrick Black Starlight. Black rough with an outgoing temperament and showed herself well. Attractive head  but out of coat and longer in back than ideal. Tail carried well over her back which detracted.

O (8,2) 1st Panton Dem & Panton’s Yorkshire Terrier Heaven Send Stribrne Prani for Dunningvale (Imp CZE). Very eye catching for her overall shape and balance both stood and on the move. Glistening silky straight coat of dark blue with rich tans to compliment and presented to perfection. Alert and intelligent expression with dark sparkling eye and small neat ears set high. Compact in body holding level top line on the move with tail carried just higher than top line and fully covered. In fit condition under that beautiful coat. Moved will purpose holding her head in a typical self-important manner. Best Av NSC Toy. 2nd Henshall’s Gemolli Antique Tapestry JW. So elegant and just a series of gentle curves. So feminine in head with such dark eyes with seductive expression. Long neck with slight arch and well laid shoulders. Top line typical with slight rise over loin and croup falling to low set tail. In very good condition with the shortest coat. She looked a picture stood but her delicate feet and fine skin did not appreciate the prickly grass under foot which affected her movement today.

Chinese Crested

J (4,0) Two slightly different types both imported and showing great promise and with many virtues. 1st Lane’s Transylvania Sasima at Konishiki RBOB & BPIB. Exciting prospect and such a confident little lady and an understandably proud owner/handler. Liked her overall shape and balance stood. Head of correct equal proportions and super dark almond eyes set wide apart. Large erect ears set at correct level.  Alert expression. Crest developing well for age. Moves with freedom and carries tail just right. Super clean skin.  2nd Boden’s Inui Take Me Away (imp Pol). Slightly longer in loin and larger overall than winner. Beautiful chiselled head and wonderful ears for size and set with fringes. Crest well developed. Dark almond eyes. Elegant in neck, held level top line and moved with drive and had reach in front. Like winner skin in immaculate condition and looked a picture of health.

PG (5,2) 1st Lane’s Transylvania Sasima at Konishiki. 2nd Boden’s Lunacrest Among The Shooting Stars (imp Fin). Of a similar type and size /shape to the same owners Polish import. Another with super head proportions and fabulous ears for size and set which really makes his expression. Really clean skin and in good body condition. Movement not quite as positive away and back held a good overall shape in side gait.

O (4,1) 1st Dowsett’s Ch Doonbeg Bete Noir via Tteswood CW12 JW ShCM. What a beautiful animal and at a gob-smacking 10 years old this powder puff is a credit to his owners. He has a beautifully proportioned head with muzzle tapering retaining strength of jaw. Dark almond shape eyes set wide apart and ears are large, erect and set just at eye line. I fully get the ‘true’ hairless’ sometimes prehistoric dentition and you rarely find this in puffs but credit where it is due. His dentition is unreal and deserve comment in a 10 year old dog of any breed; big healthy teeth all aligned for perfect scissor bite and they are gleaming white. Holds perfectly level top line stood and on the move. He front and hind quarter angulation matches so well and as such he has very good reach and drive. Impressive in side gait and sound away and back. Coat presented immaculately. I will state the obvious and say I would like him a bit smaller ideally but could not penalise him just for that. BOB. 2nd Lane’s Annie Garden Roses at Konishiki (imp CZE). Ideal size and overall shape and whilst not quite as glamourous as some she was presented really well with super clean healthy skin. Head a little wider in back skull and not quite so long in muzzle. Smaller dark almond eye. Ears large and erect. Slight arch tom her neck. Stands will with legs well under her body so well laid shoulders and strength in hind quarters. Level top line held stood and on move.

Av Imp Reg Toy

J (2,0) 1st Vidler’s RTT Indiana Jones Mon Ami at Apailana (imp LVA). Black and Tan SH dog. A small extrovert dog, squarely built. With correct body proportions and leg length. Liked his expression with large dark round eyes and large ears set high. Holds is head high with long neck with slight arch. Sickle tail set high. Moved soundly away and has typically shorter stride from moderate angulation of shoulders and upper arm and bend of stifle. 2nd Allsop’s RTT Viva Vivendi Jurmala at Pelugias. Red SH Bitch with good depth of colour. I liked her head shape and pointed muzzle and her dark eye. Her ears were large but not set as high as winner. Longer leg than depth of body but needs to be squarer in body. Not as settled on move as winner today.

0 (2,0) 1st Vidlers RTT Dosia Z Garlicy Duchownej at Apailana (imp Pol). This Red LH bitch has a real RTT stamp to her and for a developing breed looks like a useful import with lots to offer future breeding programmes. She has type, ideal size and overall balance and structure. Head proportions just right with pointed muzzle just shorter than size of head, eyes are large and set well looking forward. Large ears set high with beautiful characteristic black fringes. Square in body and legs just longer than depth. Feathered, sickle tail carried high. Coat developing well on hind legs. Moved swiftly holding top line well. Best Import.

Shih Tzu

J (4,0) The ground definitely effected the performance of a couple of the dogs in this class. A very close decision between 1 and 2 and whilst I prefer the eye shape of the 2nd the winner moved better today. 1st Skawska’s Amore Mio Satinel Reheto at Mapimakastar (imp Pol). Admired the overall balance of this dog. Held his head proudly and tail set high and carried just right to compliment. Round head with dark round eyes set wide apart which could be larger for ideal expression. Good width to underjaw with good dentition; just slightly undershot. Well bodied and dense coat all over. Very sound on the showing pads nicely going away.  2nd Leivers’ Tameron Gorgeous George at Sreviel. Slightly bigger than winner but does not detract. He has a beautiful head with width right through and a kind expression. Large dark round eye set well apart. Nose placed just at level of lower eyelid with open nostril. Shoulders well laid and well coupled in body. Tail set high and carried well. Not so tidy in front today. Coat dense and presented beautifully.

BPIB went to a Steel’s Jadoremy Red Bounty Sniper for Juhua who did not want to play today. I was impressed with the patience of his handler as he kept putting his breaks on but we did get to see glimpses of his very sound movement. Coat well developed for age and I liked his head proportions. Pleased to see him strutting his stuff at a show a week later on shorter grass.

O (1,0) 1st Steel’s  Blr Ch Ikar Juhua by Glamour (imp Bul). Admired this mature dog for his overall size and balance. His head has width right through from underjaw to his large dark round eyes to his ear set. Very typical expression. Slight arch to neck and well laid shoulders. Chest had width and depth and body proportions just right being just longer than height at withers. He was very sound coming and going showing pads going away and had proud head carriage and a level top line in side gait. I would just like tail carried a little more gaily to match head carriage. Coat in good order and well presented. BOB
