It is always an honour to judge these super sled dogs. Total clowns – yes, but a joy to judge. There were some super dogs on show here and temperaments were all excellent. They are not the easiest to show, but most coped with the floor quite well. Construction is generally their strong point and that was no different here today. Shoulders and upper arms are so much superior to most working breeds. Thank you to the Club and exhibitors for the opportunity to assess the breed once again. Thank you too to my excellent stewards and to the Club for my wonderful gift. This is a truly cracking breed that goes from strength to strength. Keep up the good work!
Veteran D/B (1,0)
1st: Bailey’s Shepherdsway Cinders at Akna. Definitely enjoying her day out. 10 years. Wide enough in skull, but still feminine. Typical wedge. Smallish triangular ears. Dark eyes which are obliquely set. Strong muscular neck. Good lay to shoulders and upper arm returns sufficiently. Pretty good width and depth to chest. Firm in topline. Moves soundly in profile, but the floor was rather tricky for her.
Puppy D/B (4,2)
1st: Atkin’s Qimugta Harpist. Fell in love with this one. No doubt some would be put off by her colour, but they’d do well to remember that this is a breed where colour is of no significance whatsoever. What a stunning outline. Her shape catches your eye, with a neck that is strong leading into a front with excellent lay to shoulders and lovely length and return to upper arm, all balanced so well at the rear. Topline is firm. Her chest is developing well, but obviously has more scope as she matures. Slight tuck up. Tail set on high and carried typically over the back. Super mover in profile. I expect great things from this young lady. RBB & BPIS
2nd: Cronin’s Akna Warhorse. A striking young dog who obviously has masses of maturing to do, who was also rather partial to having a little lay down when asked to go around the ring. A real character! Head is currently narrow for a boy, but ok for his age. The correct wedge will develop with maturity. Eyes are obliquely set, but a fraction close set. Neck of good length. Angulation is excellent all through. Little long in the body through the loins. Chest obviously still to develop. When he does move, he displays a very good stride.
Junior D/B (2,0) – Excellent class for quality
1st Bailey’s Harpan Hudson Bay Vis Akna. Top end of standard. Eye catching and looking full of quality. Lovely wide head with enough wedge. Eyes are wide apart and set obliquely. Ears well set with slightly rounded tips. Good muscular neck with very slight arch. Lovely angulation to shoulders and return of upper arm. Forelegs straight. Chest is still to develop to full maturity, but shows enough depth. It will still broaden to advantage. Great topline. Slight tuck up. Broad loins. Excellent turn of stifle and strong firm hocks. Tail is high set and carried over the back on the move. Feet are a pretty good shape fore and aft. Superb mover displaying great reach and drive, and lovely and straight out and back. Very nice boy indeed and I felt him a very worthy BD and BIS winner here.
2nd: Meredith & Wood’s Harpan James Bay. Litter brother to 1st and I loved his make, shape and outline too. Head is broad. Slightly longer through the muzzle than 1st, but still has enough breadth and displays overall a decent wedge. Strong muscular neck. Like 1st, excellent angles both fore aft. Marginally more developed in chest than 1st. Excellent topline. Slight tuck up. Excellent tail set and carriage. Didn’t always move to advantage, but what I did see, he showed an excellent gait. More ring practice and he’ll be pushing his brother all the way for the top honours. Lovely dog and a great first show for dog and handler. Well done!
Post Graduate Dog (2,0)
1st: Bailey’s Akna Kraven. A super attractive dog of ideal size and looking every inch the proper sled dog. Such an attractive head. Good head with broad skull and good depth and width to muzzle. Just about enough of a wedge. Eyes well spaced. Strong muscular neck. Excellent angles fore and aft. Decent width to chest and is deep enough. Good bone. Topline is firm, but has a very slight bump. Excellent turn of stifles and low set strong hocks. Tail set high and carried over the back. Lovely mover in profile. Naked on the day, but another who I am sure will trouble the best. RBD
2nd: Bailey’s Akna Tumnus. Pretty good strength through the head. Eyes rims appeared a tad loose, but ok for shape and set. Good firm neck. Balanced angles fore and aft. Chest not as good as 1st, having slightly less depth and width. Topline firm. Hocks low set, but a tad wide set, which showed on the move – but it could have been the floor. Profile gait was excellent displaying a very good, purposeful stride.
Limit Dog (1,0)
1st Bailey’s Akna Silver Throne. What an attractive dog! Masculine dog, but I feel he could have more width all through for my personal preference. Skull is broad. Muzzle slightly snipey. Eyes set well apart and definitely obliquely set. Ears are good for size and shape but could perhaps be slightly more rounded at the tips. Muscular neck leading into excellent shoulders. Upper arm correct for length and return. Enough width to chest which is also well let down. Topline strong. Underline typical for the breed. Tail set high and covered in thick bushy hair. Moved with good reach and drive in profile, but slightly wide behind. Again, I suspect the slippy floor was not helping with this boy who wanted to power off. Very well presented.
Open Dog (1,0)
1st: Bailey’s Akna Morzine. Certainly an all of a piece showman. Smaller end of the standard. Masculine enough. Wedge apparent, but rather more refined that I tend to look for. Eyes are oblique set. Ears are small and well furred with slightly rounded tips. Neck a tad too short and shoulders for me a little more upright. Upper arm not as under him as I would like. Firm topline. Chest is deep and broad enough for his size. Fair bone. Strong firm topline. Sufficient turn to stifles and strong firm hocks. Tail set high and carried over the back. Moves soundly enough, but not quite the reach and drive of my winners today. Sire of my BIS winner.
Post Graduate Bitch (2,0)
1st: Bailey’s Akna Kohler. Another ultra attractive eyecatching bitch. Excellent head with good wedge and strength overall, but retaining her femininity. Excellent eyes and ears. Strong neck. Super construction throughout. Chest reaches the elbows and has the desired width. Firm topline. Ribs carried well back. Slight tuck up. Strong broad loins. Tail is high set, well furred and carried over the back. Her side gait is delicious with super reach and drive. On the out and back she did tend to move rather wide behind. Excellent condition.
2nd: Cronin’s Harpan Galena Bay. What a clown! This bitch was having an absolute ball! Thoroughly enjoying herself. Unfortunately, really hard to assess today. Lighter in bone at present. Head needs to develop through the skull and muzzle. Neck ok for length. Looks pretty well angulated, but it was hard to assess on the examination. Back firm. Chest to develop. Needs slightly more substance for me. Moved erratically. Just needs time to settle.
Limit Bitch (2,0)
1st Wearmouth & McDaid’s Akna Castiel. Smaller end of standard, but has it all there. Feminine, but with enough width through the skull and muzzle. Attractive expression with wide spaced eyes which are obliquely set. Ears are small with slightly rounded tips and are well furred. Neck long enough. Shoulders are well laid and upper arm brings the forelegs well under the body. Enough width and depth to chest. Slight tuck up. Topline firm. Tail set and carried high in the move. Hocks firm and low to ground. Such a classy mover, workmanlike with good reach and drive and very sound out and back. Thoroughly deserved her BB here.
2nd: Bailey’ Akna Northern Soul. I found this bitch to have a good head. Broad skull and muzzle of correct width and depth. Eyes correct and ears are well set and of correct size. Neck good length with a slight arch. Balanced angles. For size, could do with slightly more width through the chest. Tended to stand with forelegs off straight. Bone just about ok for size. Topline firm. Tail set high. Moved rather erratically for her handler,
Open Bitch (2,0)
1st Bailey’s Akna Dale. Lovely in outline. An attractive bitch with good wedge. Lovely eyes which are obliquely set. Ears correct for set and shape, maybe a tad big. Balanced angles. Would prefer more width through the chest, but ribs are carried well back. Loins are strong. Back is firm. Hocks are low set. Moves very soundly in profile. Totally bald on the day, but in lovely muscular condition.
2nd: Needham’s Acticfire Qimmiq Misskwa For Innugati. For me this one is not quite so good through the head as 1st. Eyes could be more obliquely set and ears look rather wide set for me. Muscular neck. Angles are balanced throughout. Good chest for width and reaches to the elbows. Broad muscular loins. Tail ok for set and carriage. Moves very well in profile, but on the day went very wide behind. Again, could have been the floor. Couldn’t beat the preciseness of 1st.
