Hound Association of Scotland Open Show – 13th October 2019

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the officers and committee for the invitation to judge Best in Show at their open show and to thank my two stewards who kept everything moving along nicely in the ring. All dogs were presented in good condition and I only found one suspect bite and one dog without the correct temperament.

Best in Show went to Morton & Morgan’s Deerhound, Hyndsight Pilgrim, a quality 3yr old grey brindle dog, excellent shaped head with dark eye and strong jaw, good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, straight front and lovely deep chest, good bend of stifle and strong hindquarters which were put to use on the move which he did with ease and was a delight to watch in profile. Every time I looked around the ring he demanded my attention and thoroughly deserved top honours today, congratulations.

Reserve Best in Show went to Dollan & Ralston’s Borzoi, Donskoi Zanoza at Scotach ShCm ShCex, a 4yr old lemon & white bitch, such an elegant hound with a lovely head and expression and correct veining. Correct angulation and bone with a good depth of chest. She has an excellent topline and fall away with the correct low tail set and well angulated rear quarters which were used to her advantage on the move.

Best Puppy in Show went to Morton’s Greyhound, Estet Classic Spring Affair my find of the day! Only just 6 months and at his first show this red brindle boy oozes quality. Good head with dark eye leading to a beautiful long arched neck and well placed shoulders, correct straight front with good substance, deep chest with plenty of heart room, well bent stilfles and well knuckled feet. He looked a picture when stood and once settled on the move showed me the correct low free stride required for this breed. One I will watch with great interest in the future.

Reserve Best Puppy in Show went to Smith’s Whippet, Northwhip Never Say Never at Coynachie, 8 month fawn bitch who was another that took my eye on the go around. Pretty well shaped head with a lovely expression, arched neck and laid back shoulders, correct upper arm and well-muscled back, good tuck up and second thigh, move with elegance covering the ground with ease. Another with a bright future ahead.

Best Veteran in Show went to Wallace’s Norwegian Elkhound, CH Steldawn Allclear ShCm, 10 yr old dog who presented a pleasing picture. Square outline and short backed with correct shaped head, dark eye and correct ear set. Good bone and feet and moved out well with purpose to beat the veteran bitch in good competition.

1st Wallace’s Norwegian Elkhound, CH Steldawn Allclear ShCm

AV Hound Veteran Bitch (5,4a)

1st Scanlon’s Rhodesian Ridgeback, Sharufa Dream Maker ShCm VW, 8yr old wheaten bitch with a pretty head, good straight front with plenty of bone and elbows tucked in, deep chest and correct spring of rib. 1st Jackson’s Killoeter Unique, 22mth grey brindle bitch, well shaped head and good reach of neck, straight front with good bone and compact feet, strong quarters and well bent stifle. Moved well with ease.

1st Morton & Morgan’s Hyndsight Pilgrim BOB & BIS.

2nd Barclay’s Cotherstone Finlaggan, went a little better for his owner in this class.

Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit) Post Grad (3,1a)

1st Gilluley’s Caldewriver Legally Blonde of Ballencrieff, 3yr old orange & white bitch, with correct head shape and well set ears, would have preferred a darker eye, clean shoulders and straight front. A little out of coat but won today on her movement which showed excellent reach and drive in profile. BOB

2nd Allen’s Afterglow Cinnamon Buns, 3yr sable & white bitch, many of the same comments apply, good head and dark eye, well laid shoulders and strong hind quarters, just preferred the front and movement of 1st on the day.

Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit) Open (2,0a)

1st Gilluley’s Ir CH Haliston Didier ShCm ShCEx, 6yr old sable & white dog with the most stunning head of the correct shape with dark eye and excellent expression, good chest and ribs, level topline. Lost out to his daughter for BOB on movement today.

2nd Allen’s Haliston Deedee, 6yr old sable & white bitch who is litter sister to 1st, she has a good head and eye, not the front of 1st, level topline and good bend of stifle, moved ok.

AV NSC Hound Open (3,2a)

1st Dollan & Ralstons Portuguese Podengo, Onda De Viamonte At Scotach (Imp Prt), 14mth white & fawn bitch, it was difficult to assess this young lady as she seemed a little overawed, correct wedged head and sufficient neck, good topline and quarters, moved ok but unsure of her surroundings today.

AV Hound Minor Puppy (3,1a)

1st Corsar’s Whippet, Northwhip Rhythm’n Blues, 9mth fawn dog who I see is litter brother to my RBPIS and shares many of her attributes. Good head and eye, well laid shoulders and good straight front, excellent feet, moved well.

2nd Black & McKinley’s Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottzridge Perihelion, 6mth red wheaten bitch, this young lady was another who was a little overawed with her surroundings today, I liked her head and eye, long neck and good bone and substance. She was better on the move once settled just needs a little more confidence but a nice young girl.
