Cartmel Agricultural Society
GUNDOG GROUP
Cartmel Agricultural Society Open Show – Wednesday 07th August 2019
This is a wonderfully organised and well run show within the confines of an agricultural show. Thank you to all the exhibitors for the high entry numbers with quality exhibits. The gundog group and puppy groups were very strong and sadly not all could achieve placings. Many thanks to my 3 stewards and show manager who ensured everything ran smoothly.
Golden Retriever Graduate (4,2) 1st Trotter’s Baricia Let it Shine JW - 2 yr dog. Liked him very much even though he was given his handler a very difficult time, thankfully he eventually settled. Presented a well balanced picture. Handsome head, chiselled, correct bite, soft expression, lovely dark eye and nose. Good front angulation, deep chested. He was a little down on his front pasterns but hope this will improve as he continues to mature. Excellent spring of rib, leading to strong loin and short couplings. Very good rear angulation which he used well on the move to ensure a good driving action. Presented in good coat and condition. BOB and Grp 4 2nd Beaty’s Kerrien Sea Bird - 2 yr bitch. Pretty head, chiselled and soft expression. Correct bite. Dark eye, but would prefer darker nose. Nice spring of rib. Not quite the front or rear angulation of the winner. Moved a little close behind. Presented in nice condition. Golden Retriever Open (2,1) 1st Beaty’s Kerrien Sea Bird
Labrador Retriever Graduate (3,0)1st Smith’s Flyenpig Snout Like It - 5 yr bitch. Pretty, stocky, workmanlike bitch. Broad head, dark eye and good stop, correct bite. Ears well back. Balanced, well angulated front and rear. Deep chested, well sprung ribs. Short strong loin. Shown in good coat, although personally would prefer her to be carrying a tad less weight. Nicely balanced on the move using her angulation to her advantage with front reach and rear drive. 2nd Powell’s Seatallan Angelika – 7mth bitch. Lovely puppy enjoying her day out. Pretty head with broad skull. Ears well back. Correct bite. Good length of shoulder blade and upper arm presenting balanced front. Chest still to deepen and ribs to fully spring but has plenty of time to mature. Short coupled. Would prefer more stifle. In good coat and condition. Little loose on the move but as expected for a pup. BP Labrador Retriever Open (2,1) 1st Smith’s Flyenpig Porky Pig JW - 16mth dog. An exuberant young dog making his handler work hard for his placing, but he knew how nice he is! Everything to like about him. Lovely head, broad skull. Defined stop. Correct bite. Beautiful expression. Well laid shoulders with excellent length of upper arm. Strong bone and deep chested. He stood well over the ground. Good spring to ribs, strong loin and short coupled. Very good stifle and strong thighs. Shown in good coat and condition. His exuberance showed on the move but once settled was very balanced with good drive. Sure he will continue to mature well. BOB 2nd Smith’s Flyenpig Where Ya Bin - 16mth bitch. Pretty bitch with lovely head, broad skull and correct bite. Ears well back. Good spring to her ribs, strong loin and short coupled. Very good stifle. Shown in lovely coat and condition. Had good front reach on the move but unfortunately was wide in her rear movement which presented a picture of unbalanced movement with no drive.
Flatcoat Retriever Sp Yearling (2,0) 1st Curtis’ Tallistar Midnight Tango - 16mth bitch. Pretty bitch, still very immature but sure will come on. Lovely long, moulded head, flat skulled. Slight stop giving soft and intelligent expression from dark eye. Correct bite. Very balanced and well proportioned front and rear angulation. Chest still to fully mature in depth. Strong loined and short coupling which showed holding her topline on the move. Very nice feet. In good condition but not quite the best of coat. Loose on the move but showed reach and drive, just needs to tighten as she matures. 2nd Curtis’ Tallistar All That Jazz – 16mth dog. Brother to the winner with very similar qualities but far rangier than his sister and looked far more immature. Masculine head but in no way course, of good length, flat skull and moderately broad. Very nice expression from dark eye. Lovely balanced front and rear angulation with good length of upper arm and good bend to his stifle. In better coat than the winner but far looser on the move with less balance, but this is purely to his age and like his sister should improve with maturity. Flatcoat Retriever Graduate (2,0) 1st Curtis’ Tallistar Midnight Tango. 2nd Curtis’ Tallistar All That Jazz. Flatcoat Retriever Open (1,0) 1st Ross’ Go With The Flow Ebony In Harmony At Qlocontrail JW Sh CM (Imp NED) 3yr dog. Quality male who had ring presence and presented a beautiful balanced picture of a strong male. Presented in wonderful coat and muscular condition. Handsome head with intelligent expression and dark eye. Correct long, moulded head, with flatness to his skull. Very good front and rear angulation, deep in the chest. Strong in the loin, although would prefer him to have been just a little shorter coupled. Well set tail carried correctly on the move. He filled the ring with his movement but every now and again could be a little erratic in rear movement slightly losing his rear drive. Pleased to award him BOB.
Italian Spinone Graduate 1st Gill’s Testaverde Enrico Caruso del Jocagil - 9mth dog brown roan. A very slow maturing breed, especially males and although he was immature and rangy that didn’t detract from his quality which I am sure will stand him well for a promising future. Filled your eye from the moment he entered the ring, in beautiful coat and condition. Masculine head balanced to his side. Divergent head planes, correct equal lengths of muzzle to skull. Pronounced occiput and slight stop. The typical soft, intelligent, wonderful expression. Correct bite. Front and rear angulation very good and well balanced. Good length of upper arm, chest deep but expect it will come down even further as he matures. Well set shoulders. Good spring to his rib, short coupled and strong in the line. Very good topline with the correct break but in no way over exaggerated. Strong thighs. On the move he was as expected, loose but still had good front reach and rear drive, held his topline with good tail carriage. I liked him a lot, I was very pleased to award him BP and PG1. 2nd Bennet’s Testaverde Irma Cappice del Hochopepa – 16mth bitch brown roan. Litter sister to 1st and did look more mature stood. Not quite as helpful to her handler as her brother though. Similar qualities to the winner but much more loose and erratic on the move, but should have a nice future. Italian Spinone Open (2,1) 1st Pugh’s Susanna All That Jazz at Bellins - 2yr orange bitch. Liked her very much, presents a square outline with balance front and rear. Pretty head of correct lengths and divergent planes. Lovely soft expression. Correct bite. Deep chested, excellent sternum, nice front angulation with length to her upper arm. Well sprung ribs, to short couplings which gave her strength to her loin. Correct topline with break. She did tend to drop a bit at the croup though which at times spoilt her outline. Liked her rear stifle and angulation with strong thighs. In good coat and condition. Moved well with reach and drive BOB
Pointer Graduate (3,0) 1st Smith’s Sniperay Lord Lampbourne via Tzaziki – 22mth liver and white dog. The most balanced of the class. Well up to size but presented a nice picture. Medium breadth head with nice expression from dark eye. Defined stop and prominent occiput. Correct bite. Good front with nice deep chest. Very nice length of upper arm leading to well laid shoulders. Ribs well sprung, liked his strong loin and short coupling. His rear angulation had a good stifle and strong thighs. Moved well, still a little loose but covered the ground well. 2nd Mason’s Morgan Van Freebreeze (Imp) - 9mth bitch. Still very much an immature puppy stood and on the move, needs time. Pretty head, defined stop and occiput. Lovely soft expression. correct bite. Chest needs to drop. Good oval bone. Front and rear angulation balanced which although loose moving she used to her advantage to gain rear drive and front reach. Sure she will come on nicely. BP and PG2 Pointer Open (5,1) An interesting class to judge as the exhibits were all so very differing types. 1st Bell’s Luneville Dazzling Diamond at Owlspoint 2yr orange and white dog. Won the class on breed type and balance. Smaller stature dog but has good bone. Lovely balanced head, slight dished face, defined stop and pronounced occiput. Liked his eye and very gentle expression. Arched long neck led to his good shoulders, well laid and with good length to his upper arm. Chest of good depth. Well sprung ribs, liked his short coupling which held his strong loin. Strong rear thighs, stifle ok would prefer to be a little more angulated. In very good condition and shown well. On the move he was very balanced with good front reach and drove well from the rear. I feel he still has a little bit more maturing to do but liked him and pleased to award him BOB and Grp3. 2nd Perkins’ Ir Sh Ch Kanix Fate of Brent JW Sh CM. 7yr black and white dog. Very differing type to 1st. Well up to size but so much to like about him, would have been nice to judge him when younger. Masculine head but in absolutely no way coarse, well defined stop, pronounced occiput, lovely eye and expression. Arched neck leading to well laid shoulders with nice length of upper arm. Deep chested. Good oval bone and strong front pasterns. Nice spring of rib, strong muscled loin and short coupled, all of which gave him a strong topline well held on the move. Good rear angulation and well muscled. In lovely condition for a veteran. Moved nicely with reach and drive but his age just beginning to show in his slightly loose elbows. He was the one on the day I would have taken home. Also gave him the veteran stakes class and thrilled to see the Best in Show judge liked him too by awarding him a thoroughly well deserved BVIS.
German SH Pointer Graduate (1,0) 1st Sielski’s Orchidstar Willy Nilly – 9mth dog. I liked this puppy very much and will watch to see how he matures. Everything is just right for his age. Head balanced to his body, moderate all round with a slight stop. Lovely dark eye and soft expression. Ears high set. Correct bite. Neck of good length, clean and leading to well laid shoulders, with tops of blades of correct width. Liked his length of upper arm, bone and slope to his front pasterns. Chest of sufficient depth for his age but should deepen with maturity, leading to his elbows being closer to his body. Good ribs, strong muscular loin and short coupled. I would prefer more slope of his croup to his tailset but did not detract from his well held topline. Balanced moderate rear angulation. A little loose on the move but can forgive him due to his age. Had good reach and drive which will only get better. BP and PG3 German SH Pointer Open (2,0) 1st Sielski’s Orchidstar Bonds of Speed JW Sh CM – 2 yr dog. Caught my eye as he came in and certainly didn’t disappoint. Eye catching, upstanding male, beautifully balanced stood and on the move. No mistaking he is male, but in no way coarse, good bone and well up to height. Lovely head in full balance to his size. Correct bite, dark eye and soft expression. Well set ear. Nice length of neck into well laid shoulders, good length of upper arm, deep chest, good spring of rib. Well muscled loin, short coupled, strong topline. His rear angulation is fully balanced to his front, strong stifle and very good second thigh. Well set tail from his croup carried very well on the move. Glided around the ring on the move, excellent front reach coupled with strong rear drive. No doubt will have a good future. BOB, Grp1 and thrilled to see him awarded RBIS later in the day well done. 2nd Brown’s Newlands Pass to Montalba – 3yr bitch. Pretty smaller stature bitch but good bone for her size and balanced stood. Lovely head, good front and rear angulation. Would prefer more depth to her chest. Well sprung ribs, strong loin. In good condition, just a little loose on the move especially coming towards me.
AVNSC Gundog Puppy (3,2) 1st Graham’s Nyliram Lets Twist Again 7mth WSS dog. A lovely puppy presenting a balanced picture. In super coat and condition. Super head with soft expression. Nice slight domed skull and good stop. Nice eye colour and low set ear. Correct bite. Liked his length of neck leading to well set balanced shoulders. For a young pup he has good depth of chest. Nice feet. Good spring of rib. Strong loin. Beautifully angulated rear, well muscled for a youngster. A little loose on the move but as expected for his age but used his balanced front and rear angulation to cover the ground well. BP and PG4 AVNSC Gundog Junior (3,1) 1st Graham’s Eald Dances with Wolves Among Nyliram - 15mth Sussex Spaniel D. I have to be honest and say I have only judged Sussex Spaniels on a few occassions, but sometimes a dog comes into the ring where everything just looks right for the breed and this was certainly the case with him. I liked him very much and sure he has a very bright future. Did not look immature at all and belied his young age. Strong head, wide in the skull, with slight curve. Super eye with lovely expression and wonderful frowning brows. Good stop and correct bite. Long, muscular neck leading to lovely sloping shoulders, super deep chest. Ribs well back into strong rear with moderate angulation. In wonderful coat and condition, he just presented a picture of strength and balance without a hint of over exaggeration. On the move, there was the distinctive roll coupled with true movement out and back. Will watch to see how good his future is. BOB, GRP2, just pipped in the group by the eventual RBIS winner. 2nd Smith’s Fecimile Living the Dream at Flyenpig - 12mth Field Spaniel bitch. Just out of puppy and very much looked immature compared to 1st. Lovely feminine head, good front and rear angulation. Shown in lovely coat and condition with nice feathering. Everything just needs to mature especially on the move where she was still a little loose both front and behind. AVNSC Gundog Post Graduate (3,2) 1st Smith’s Fecimile Living the Dream at Flyenpig AVNSC Gundog Open (7,4) A lovely class to judge. 1st Graham’s and Hogstrom’s Dons Statement to Nyliram JW (Imp) 2 yr old WSS dog. Very nice dog presenting balanced and in proportion WSS stood. Masculine but not coarse head, correct bite. Nice eye and expression. Low set ear. Good length of neck into well laid shoulders. Lovely depth of chest. Ribs well back, strong loin. Balanced rear angulation which he used well on the move. Coat in lovely condition. Just not quite as strong in his front movement as the Sussex for BOB. 2nd Smith’s Ewtor Afinity for Flyenpig JW Sh CM. 2 yr Field Spaniel bitch. So very close to winning this class, just felt the WSS was only slightly stronger on the move. Beautiful feminine bitch with extremely nice aristocratic head, long and chiselled. Correct bite. Dark eye, low set ears with good feathering. Balanced front and rear. In lovely condition with good coat, just a little loose on the move.
