Herts & Essex Border Canine Society Open Show 30th March 2019 Keysoe, Beds. What a lovely atmosphere at this well-run show, with friendly, efficient committee members, and my two hard-working stewards, Jenelle Robbins and Jayne Bennett, keeping us all on the straight and narrow! Huge thanks to the exhibitors for allowing me the privilege of judging their lovely dogs. I tried to ensure that I did not reward over-angulation or unsteady movement. I was so impressed with the depth of quality and great characters, enjoying their day. GUNDOG GROUP Absolutely superb representatives of their breeds. GP 1 Streven’s Sh Ch Erikachen Conaire at Tollisty JW ShCM ShCEX RETRIEVER D (NSDT) Very occasionally you come across a dog that has such perfect symmetry it instantly attracts. The overall superb balance and ground-covering, effortless movement, won this handsome boy the group of such high quality. A superb example of the breed, with the most appealing, intelligent, friendly, expression. Correct angulation with great muscling across the quarters and loin, correct tail carriage with his free, even movement. Great rapport with handler. GP 2 Thomas Bowdonia Anastasia JW ShCM Spaniel, Welsh Springer B Quality literally shone from this gorgeous girl, melting expression with great chiseling, also so well balanced, strong, straight bone and driving movement. Firm topline and tail set. Another happy personality. GP 3 McDonald’s R,A&R Roanjora Castelao JW ShCM Irish Red & White Setter D (Veteran Group winner) GP 4 Mahon, Hunns & Newtons’s Arnac Bay Huron Retriever (Chesapeake Bay) D Very typy boy, good condition and superb coat. Bone straight and strong, head balanced on a strong, muscular neck. Great coat and workmanlike, keen, attitude. GUNDOG PUPPY GROUP GP 1 Sladden’s Tyrbechgyn Believe You Will at Canemamans Bracco Italiano D (BP AVNSC) GP 2 Montandon’s Ashseale Once Upon a Star at Trapestone B (BP Retriever (Flatcoat) GP 3 Mahon, Hunns & Newton’s Arnac Bay Huron, Retriever (Chesapeake Bay) D (GP 4 GG) GP 4 Wallington’s Wynrita School Daze, Retriever (Golden) D Promising boy, superb bone and correct, good, matching angulation front and back, strode out with confidence, at one with handler, but carrying too much weight which caused him to roll on the move. Intelligent, appealing expression. AVNSC GUNDOG Junior D/B 8(3a) 1 Sladden’s Tyrbechgyn Believe You Will at Canemamans, Bracco Italiano D B PUPPY, GUNDOG PUPPY G1 Very promising, typical boy, head is haughty, sophisticated and cheeky, all at once, and obviously needs to develop. Striking free and easy gait showing a great untiring capability, holding his topline, which won him the class and later the Puppy Group. Healthy, glossy, coat and condition. Super feet and bone with straight front. Correct balance with short-couplings. Just right for his young age. A bit naughty, but at one with handler 2 Shepherd & Macbain’s Fecimus Written in the Stars, Spaniel, Field. B Gorgeous young girl with beautiful chiselled head and sweet expression. Balanced in body and bone. Even, driving, movement and the most glorious, shiny coat with deep colour. So responsive to handler. 3 Salter’s Eskimals Life After Jack, GSP B Stood so well-balanced with a short, strong back, no exaggerations, exuding power for work with no coarseness. Smooth, driving gait, happy character. Post Graduate D/B 5(2a) 1 Sladden’s Feel of Pride Eva Elettra at Canemamans (Imp Rus) Bracco Italiano B Three quality dogs and very hard to choose between them. All moved so well, this girl was so superbly balanced, strong but feminine, with correct angulation fore and aft and good muscling, holding her topline on the move. Great breed type and gained first with her solid, strength of quarters. 2 Spillane’s Belatarr Jupiter, HW Vizsla D Superb in head and expression, oozing intelligence! Impressive coat, good balance and correct bone, even, flowing, driving movement. 3 Beecham’s Grafscoe Gnezdo Arlo (Imp), D (Bracco Italiano) Noble head and expression, correct elastic coat, extended, true trot, great character. Open 10 D/B 10(1a) 1 Peebles Mr & Mrs Keigame Bell of All (GSP)B BEST AVNSC Three super dogs, very impressive and hard to split, all showing great, gentle, character. First won on overall balance, movement and breed type, a joy to watch her impressive, powerful gait from well-muscled quarters. 2 Smith & Reardon’s Sh Ch Winterwell Fowl Play (GSP)D RES BEST AVNSC Mature, masculine, great neck and shoulders, noble expression, good muscling and balance. 3 Upton-Lovett & Upton’s Seasham A Kind of Magic (GSP)B Sweet, feminine expression, also correct balance, straight legs, lovely condition and effortless gait. Three sparkling characters. AV GUNDOG VETERAN STAKES 17(3a) 1 Phipps, Baker & Baker’s Gemswin Dennis the Menace at Maddouse D Retriever (Flat Coated) Quality simply shone from this boy, not just because of his deep black coat colour but his happy, biddable attitude. Good head type with correct moulding, set on a good neck flowing into well-laid back shoulders, correct couplings, balance, bone and feet. Flowing, driving movement, covering the ground at one with handler. 2 Brooksmith’s Nightgold Blackavar B Pointer Quality, mature girl with great balance, drive and muscling. Loved her balanced head and colouring, her overall strength with femininity and grace. 3 McDonald’s R,D&R, Roanjora Pinotage ShCM, Irish Red & White Setter D Carrying his almost ten years with style. Noble, cleanly balanced head and free-striding gait from muscled, balanced construction, holding his topline, great character. IRISH RED AND WHITE SETTER Junior D/B 2(0a) 1 Winterburn’s N&S, Roanjora Laurent Perrier B Lovely girl who would benefit from more ringcraft, appealing intelligent expression, correct balance with strong topline and muscling, gorgeous coat with correct texture and feathering. 2 Mapletoft’s Roanjora Tanqueray D BEST PUPPY Initially unsettled, balanced 9 month old, however, allowed examination and moved out very well with good extension. Open D/B 2(0a) 1 McDonald’s R,D & R Roanjora Castelao JW ShCM D BEST OF BREED This majestic gentleman exuded character, breed type and quality, masculinity without coarseness, everything in correct proportions, with maturity, excels in depth of chest and forechest, great muscling, excelled in covering the ground with long, effortless, matching strides on strong, straight bone, as befits his construction. Attractive coat with good feathering. A cheeky and intelligently expressive, beautiful head, enjoying his rapport with handler. 2 Stevens Spiralwood Variety Girl B RES BEST OF BREED Lovely girl with a pretty head and correct balance and bone. Carrying too much weight for me. RETRIEVER (FLAT COATED) Junior D/B 5(0a) 1 Powell’s Bonnyhilbrae Love of Joy B Compact and balanced, and certainly joyful! Short-coupled with well let-down hocks, creating even, easy, true strides. Deep shine in dense coat. 2 Montandon’s Asheale Once Upon a Star at Trapestone B BEST PUPPY Again a happy, confident girl, needs to come together in body as yet, correct, straight front and bone, sweet expression. 3 Goodman’s G&J Blacklake Mariana for Gayplume B Post Graduate D/B 2(0a) 1 Goodman’s G&J Blacklake Isabella B RES BEST OF BREED Won on her balanced angulation and free-striding, even movement, holding her topline, happy and intelligent. 2 Broadbent’s Trapestone Out of the Blue D Masculine eye and expression, great presence, happy boy, not quite the movement of winner but an easy mover with good muscling. Open D/B 5(0a) 1 Phipps Baker & Baker’s Gemswin Dennis the Menace at Maddouse D BEST OF BREED (Veteran winner) 2 Montandon’s Trapestone Bohemian Girl B Superb shoulder layback on this girl, preferred overall balance of lst. Gorgeous eye and expression, wonderful coat and condition, flowing, happy mover. 3 Murray’s Araminta Glass at Gayplume B IRISH SETTER Junior D/B 2(0a) 1 Tye’s Braidmount Come to Me D RES BEST OF BREED Superb head on this typy boy with a glorious coat and flowing movement. Deep chest and well-muscled. 2 Fox’s D&J Kerryfair Special Diamond B Such a pretty, balanced head on this balanced girl, superb condition and happy character. Needs to tighten on hind movement. Open 3(0a) 1 Lewis & Levine’s Glenlaine Squirrel Nutkinn at Valasarch D BEST OF BREED This handsome boy won on his driving, effortless movement and great balance. The most wonderful head and expression and quality looks, mature depth of chest and forechest, firm topline, powerful hindquarters. Exuding character, at one with handler 2 Fox’s D&J Millcroft Bubbling Moon B RES BEST OF BREED Such a sweet girl, also superbly balanced, with good bone, condition and even action, fore and aft. Gave away so much maturity to 1st, however very hard decision. 3 Ashley-Turner’s Jonola Moonshine D RETRIEVER (LABRADOR) Puppy D/B 2(1a) 1 Allen’s Warringahs Wirrabara at Timouron B BEST PUPPY, RBOB Absolutely gorgeous, feminine girl with such a balanced, chiselled head, so appealing. Compact, short-coupled and balanced from any angle, just right for age. Healthy black coat, good feet and topline. Happy character, however needs to tighten up on hind action. Post Graduate 1(0a) 1 Allen’s Timouron Legacy D BEST OF BREED A teddy bear! Super bone, strength and substance. Dense, double coat, super flow of neck into well-laid back shoulders, broad and strong body. Good depth of muzzle and balance of head. Great character with confident, strong strides. AV HOUND Junior D/B 12(5a) 1 Pitfield’s Follyfield Farfalla, (Dachshund, Min Long-Haired)B What a sweetheart, such a free mover with even strides and drive. Beautiful chocolate and tan dapple correct coat, great feet and straight bone, correct forechest. Good muscling and short-coupled. Cheeky, balanced head and expression. 2 Johnson’s Cyangrange Serendipi Tea (Whippet)B Quality shone out of this beautiful girl, looked at me with a clever but gentle expression, great condition and balance, held her topline on the move, freely with no exaggeration. 3 Graham’s J&A Brumberhill Armstrong (Dachshund, Wire-Haired)D Post Graduate D/B 7(5a) 1 Kitchen’s Swingletrees Roses are Red at Tarkdash (Dachshund, Min Smooth-haired)B Won this class on her even, powerful movement. Very sweet expression and correct head mouldings. Correct balance and head carriage, happy character. 2 Richardson’s A&S Lewcher Take a Bow Whippet B Gorgeous head and very attractive colour. Good muscling, balance and condition, alert disposition. Correct topline held on the move Open D/B 7(3a) 1 Thomas’s Aarminias Princess of China at Bowdonia Whippet B What a feminine girl, exuding breed type and strength. Alert, melting eye and balanced head, elegant muscular neck and matching construction. Free, even, effortless movement, at one with handler. 2 Wilton-Clark’s Shalfleet The Lion King JW Whippet D Also superbly muscled, good bone on straight legs, covered the ground easily and effortlessly, correct balance and happy character, just preferred an extra sparkle in 1st. 3 Wilson’s Bonavoir Senorita at Rogermardax (Dachshund, Long-Haired) B ANY VARIETY D/B OPEN STAKES 46(27a) 1 Skerritt & Betts Ch Beaujons Ugly Betty of Monkhams JW ShcM PBGV B Well, not exactly ugly! Won this lovely class on her ring presence and character, seemingly to float around the ring, covering it like a much bigger dog! She is perfectly balanced with her shorter leg and proportions, with her strong neck so well-set into correct shoulder layback. Strong hindquarters and rough, good coat. Beautifully handled. 2 Hayes Ragus Fabulous Clown ShCM Norwich Terrier D And what a little clown he is, proud as punch and oozing character, great mover from superb wide, strong quarters and rock hard topline, lovely eye and great feet. Perfect, wiry coat and condition. Nothing between 1st and 2nd, just had to choose. 3 Saich’s Lindcoly Sweetest Oreo Cairn Terrier B Now I also want a Cairn Terrier! What a darling, Greyfriar’s Bobby sprung to mind although he may have been a Skye. Anyway, how striking she is, with her grey, harsh, gleaming double coat, standing four-square with great balance and presence. So alert, happy and free-striding. Janis Ward
