Ashton In Makerfield Canine Society

Ashton-In-Makerfield Canine Society (02/03/2019)

It was a great honour to be asked to judge at this very popular show and to gain such a super entry across all board. My sincerest thanks must go to the committee for inviting me, my very capable stewards and to all of those who attended. I thoroughly enjoyed my first time judging in this area!

Labrador Retriever Puppy (5,1)

1) Druggan’s, A Sense Of Pleasure’s Get Lucky (Imp Deu). An excellent quality 10 month old black dog who immediately appealed for his very good outline and proportions for age. Liked his masculine head for age with lovely dark eyes and good stop. Neat ears that are well set. Good reach of neck which flows into a super forehand assembly with good forechest. Lovely straight limbs with good feet. Excellent body and spring of rib, firm topline with short loin and balanced hind angulation with a lovely thick tail. The precision of his front and hind action was most pleasing with a balanced and energetic profile action using his tail well. Very pleased to award him BPIB and pushed my BOB winner all the way but disappointed to see he did not stay to compete in the puppy group.

2) Bruce & Johnson’s, Cricklecreek Chrisney of Teazledown. An 11 month old black bitch who is ultra feminine but with the correct substance. Pretty head and expression with the darkest of eyes. An excellent forehand assembly, firm topline with a good tail set. Nice hind angles. Precise going away but just lost out needing to be firmer coming towards, another with an energetic workmanlike side gait.

3) Birch’s, Bruxinho Rewrite The Stars.

Labrador Retriever Junior (4,1)

1) Druggan’s, Mafia Lab’s Taboo Webster at Balladoole. This 15 month old yellow dog stood out in this class for his obvious strength and maturity. Masculine head and expression with dark eyes and well set ears. Decent reach of neck although a bit stuffy onto well laid shoulders but would prefer him a touch less steeper in upper arm. Very well bodied and good length of foreleg with a strong topline and correct tail set. Balanced hind angulation. Precise coming and going with balanced and positive profile action.

2) Disley’s, Acredam Capercaille. A 16 month old black bitch who is from a smaller and more refined mould than 1. I liked her obvious femininity with a lovely head and expression. Her angulation is balanced fore and aft although felt she was a touch steep over her croup. Very correct going away but needs to firm up coming towards, loved her extrovert temperament.

3) Birch’s, Bruxinho Rewrite The Stars.

Labrador Retriever Post Graduate (6,1)

1) Druggan’s, Mafia Lab’s Taboo Webster at Balladoole. See winner of Junior.

2) Artingstall’s, Hightrevoron Forget Me Not. A top sized 20 month old yellow bitch who really appealed for her good shape and excellent angulation. Loved her head and expression with a very good reach of neck. Lovely spring of rib. On the move she went with precision from all angles but she is a touch longer cast than 1 and today I preferred the more compact proportions of my winner.

3) Gower’s, Nigabee Honeybee at Aughtonchase.

Labrador Retriever Limit (4,1)

1) Druggan’s, A Sense Of Pleasure’s El Toro at Balladoole (Imp Deu). A 17 month old black dog, absolutely stand out in this class and the breed overall today for me. Loved his size, strength and balance overall. His head is strong without coarseness and nice dark eyes. He has a good reach of neck which flows into his excellent forehand assembly and well developed forechest. Good length of foreleg and correct depth of brisket. Strong topline which flows to the end of his thick tail that is correctly set. His hind angles are balanced to his front. Precise both going and coming with super deportment and carriage in profile that demands your attention, put down in super condition with excellent muscletone. It was a pleasure to award him BOB today, although again I wish he was able to stay to make his presence felt in the group.

2) Markham’s, Stmakajo Boba Fett. 4 year old masculine yellow dog who shows good balance in angulation fore and aft. Liked his firm topline with a correct tail set. A steady, positive mover from all angles, would prefer his body condition to be a little less heavy.

3) Gower, Meadowline Mon Amour at Aughtonchase.

Labrador Retriever Open (4,2)

1) Manning’s, Overmarsh Take Five. 3 year old yellow bitch who is rather unassuming on first appearance but appealed for her good substance and outline. Her head is a little stronger than I would prefer but she possesses a good shade of eye and correct ear set. Her angulation is very good fore and aft with a super topline and tailset. Her movement is really her forte showing precision going and coming with a fluid side gait and lashing tail. In good coat and condition.

2) Disley’s, Oakhouse Ordery. 4 year old black bitch who also had good bodily proportions. Preferred her head and expression to 1. Liked her correct angulation fore and aft but at the moment she is a little too heavy which spoils her outline. She shows correct hind action going away but needs to be firmer in front, very positive and happy in profile.

This was a super quality entry of Pointers, thank you for entering!

Pointer Puppy (6,1)

1) Dyer, Oddie, Oddie & Coles’, Sharphilly Serendipity. A 7 month old black/white bitch who appealed for her curvaceous shape that flowed from nose to tail. For me, her head is well proportioned and obviously feminine but needs a bit more work in it, this can come with time. Liked her forehand assembly and well developed forechest for age. Super firm topline and well set beesting tail. Liked her depth of brisket for age and correct underline. Correct, balanced hind action. On the move she is accurate and easy from all angles which won her the class, just felt her litter brother had the better forehand assembly in the challenge for BP.

2) Gordon’s, Hawkfield Flibbertigibert. I loved this 6 month old bitch on the stack. Although she is very raw at this stage, she has all the essentials that give her so much promise for the future. Her head is ultra feminine with a good stop and lovely dark eyes. Reachy neck onto a good forehand assembly. Firm topline and decent spring of rib for her age. More hind angulation than 1 but still correct. On the move she gave away a lot and needs to settle angles but there was glimpses of correct front/hind action and a stylish side gait, I will watch her with great interest!

3) Stokes’, Moenfair Dances The Moon into Guonabara.

Pointer Junior (3,1)

1) Oddie’s, Sharphilly Boondoggle. Litter brother to my Puppy winner, this 7 month old black/white dog is an exciting prospect for the future. Immediately appeals for his curvy shape with no sharp edges. For me, his head has a little more work than his sister and possesses great strength. Lovely reach of neck onto the most excellent forehand assembly and forechest which tipped the scales in his favour for BP. Good depth of brisket for age with a super unbroken topline and beesting tail. Corresponding hind angles, he is so accurate both ways with a stylish side gait showing excellent reach and drive. Another I will watch with great interest, he pushed by Open winner all the way. Delighted to award him BPIB and see him take PG2!

2) Gordon’s, Hawkfield Flibbertigibert. Much more settled in this class!

Pointer Limit (6,3)

1) Astbury’s, Millpoint Simply In Step with Dorbury JW. A very well grown black/white 2.5 year old dog. Liked his impressive outline and balanced angulation. His head is very masculine and well proportioned with dark eyes but would prefer a little less flew. Long neck with good forehand assembly, firm topline and corresponding hind angulation. Tidy going away but needs to tighten coming towards, really covers the ground in profile. Won the class on his more settled performance.

2) Disley’s, Ridanflight Rum Truffle. This 3 year old orange/white bitch was a more pleasing size than 1. Her shape was easy on the eye from nose to tail, again, no sharp edges. Liked her head and expression which was obviously feminine. A good lay of shoulder but steeper in upper arm than 1. Well bodied with a firm topline. Good hind angulation and beesting tail. A very enthusiastic mover! She was correct going away but was not settled in front and tended to pick up too much coming towards.

3) Macmanus’, Luneville Solitaire.

Pointer Open (5,0)

1) Gordon’s, Hawkfield Audacity JW (AI). This 19 month old lemon/white dog caught my eye on the first look at the class. I loved his balance for front and hind angulation. His head is masculine without coarseness with correct proportions and good chiselling. Long, reachy neck onto an excellent forehand assembly. Strong topline, well sprung ribs and strong loin which flows onto a correct beesting tail. Balanced hind angulation. A very good example of precise front and hind action and he really uses his hocks well in profile to power round with great style on a long stride, this boy would definitely benefit from a large grass ring. Very pleased to give him BOB and see him shortlisted in the group!

2) Weaver’s, Anniezu Lovely Day ShCM. I liked the overall make and shape of this 5 year old orange/white dog. Nothing exaggerated; his head was of great appeal being masculine and well proportioned with good dish. Nice reach of neck onto a good forehand assembly and well developed forechest. Firm topline, good spring of rib. Correct hind angulation, very precise going away and coming towards with a balanced side gait.

3) Kirby’s, Pipeaway Master Design JW ShCM.

German Shorthaired Pointer Puppy (5,2)

1) Sielski’s, Orchidstar Okey Dokey. This 6 month old bitch possesses excellent angulation fore/aft which won her the class. Presenting a very balanced picture of medium-size. Liked her pretty head and expression with correct stop. Good reach of neck with slight arch. Her forehand assembly is super with good forechest for age. Excellent depth and body all through. Firm topline and short loin. Good hind angulation with short hocks. Very precise and co-ordinated for one so young from all angles. Delighted to award her BPIB!

2) Hamlin’s, Easesprings Oberon at Nuash. An 11 month old well grown dog. A strong, upstanding male who possesses very good bone and substance. I liked his front with good angulation and well developed forechest. Firm topline and good depth of brisket. A little steep over his croup and moderate in hind angulation compared to my winner. As a result, his movement in profile did not quite have the drive of 1.

3) Barker’s, Valger Rapunzel.

German Shorthaired Pointer Junior (2,0)

1) Barker’s, Radstorm Legal Eagle. 17 month old bitch who is medium sized with balanced angulation. Pretty head and expression with correct proportions and dark eyes. Well bodied with correct depth of brisket, firm topline and underline with a good tail set. A sound, steady mover from all angles.

2) Sielski’s, Orchidstar Willy Nilly. Litter brother to my winner of Puppy with many of her attributes. He shows all the promise possessing good angulation and proportions but is just a little more raw than his sister. Loved his masculine head without coarseness. Needs more ring experience and schooling to get the best out of him, a very promising youngster!

German Shorthaired Pointer Limit (1,0)

1) Barker’s, Radstorm Legal Eagle. See winner of Junior.

German Shorthaired Pointer Open (4,2)

1) Milligan’s, Isara Kurzhaar All Spice. What a delight this bitch is! I loved her from the moment she walked into the class with her excellent type, shape and proportions. Beautiful head with a melting expression and well sized ears. Good reach of neck with the best forehand assembly of the breed entry today. Deep brisket, firm topline with strong loin and lovely hind angulation. On the move she just got better showing precise front and hind action with a powerful, athletic side gait using her hocks to give the drive I was looking for. I thought her to be fantastic, BOB and delighted to see her go G3!

2) Sielski’s, Orchidstar Bonds Of Speed JW. A rising 2 year old male. I liked his obvious strength and substance while still retaining his grace and athleticism. Strong head with correct proportions and dark eyes. A little more moderate in front angulation compared to 1. Liked his short back and firm topline. Very good hind angles and tailset. Accurate coming/going and displays an athletic side gait with good carriage.

German Wirehaired Pointer Puppy (4,1)

1) Donnelly’s, Kimmax Who Kares Wins. This 9 month old black/white bitch immediately appeals for her correct substance and obvious femininity. Her head is just delightful with correct proportions and breadth over her back skull with the darkest of eyes and correct facial furnishings. Her angulation fore/aft is superbly balanced. Needs to fill into her frame which she has plenty of time to do. On the move she displays very accurate hind action but needs to firm up coming towards. In profile she covers her ground well with excellent deportment, owning one of the best coats of the entry. She pushed my Limit winner all the way for BOB but her time will come, delighted to award her BPIB!

2) Kearns’, Germanus Gotta Catchem with Rudishaw. A 9 month old solid liver, from a slightly longer cast than my winner. Liked her feminine head and expression while still displaying good strength. Well bodied for her age with a firm topline and good tail set. Would not want anymore hind angulation. She goes round with a stylish side gait and is positive coming/going. Not quite the coat of 1.

3) Geary’s, Germanus China Doll.

German Wirehaired Pointer Junior (3,1)

1) Geary’s, Germanus Gotta Believe. A very well grown 9 month old solid liver dog. At present, he is more together compared to 2. Strong head and expression with good furnishings. Moderate but balanced angulation fore/aft. Excellent bone/substance. Steady mover in both directions and balanced in profile. His coat is close fitting but would prefer a slightly harsher texture.

2) Kearns’, Germanus Gotta Catchem with Rudishaw.

German Wirehaired Pointer Limit (2,1)

1) Donnelly’s, Kimmax Knock Yourself Out. A 22 month old, imposing dog who is an excellent one for type and proportions, all wrapped in the harshest of jackets! His head is masculine with breadth over his backskull without coarseness and well furnished. A good reach of neck onto a very good forehand assembly and well developed forechest. Well sprung ribs with a firm topline and short, strong loin. Really liked his hind angulation with firm hocks. Absolutely correct from all angles on the move showing excellent reach and drive in profile with good carriage. Delighted to award him BOB!

German Wirehaired Pointer Open (4,2)

1) Donnelly’s, Beechillawn Oooh Betty. 2.5 year old bitch who won the class on her hock action in profile. Liked head well furnished head which possessed correct breadth while retaining her femininity. Her angulation is balanced fore/aft with accurate front and hind action on the move. Decent coat.

2) Geary & Hoyle’s, Sh Ch. Germanus Black N Gold. 4 year old black/white who really looked the part on the stack. He has such a super well proportioned head showing great strength all through with sufficient breadth and dark eyes. Loved his forehand assembly and forechest. Firm topline and strong loin. Moderate hind angulation. Correct going/coming but did not use his hocks as well as 1 in profile, the flooring may not have helped matters. In excellent coat with super muscletone.

Italian Spinone Puppy (0,0)

Italian Spinone Junior (1,0)

1) Thompson’s, Testaverde Back For Good. 16 month old brown roan dog. Liked his obviously square body proportions. His head is lovely, showing good divergence and a big spongy nose. Decent reach of neck with good angulation fore/aft and the characteristic topline. Needing to spring in rib and deepen in brisket with age, he is a shade close both ways but shows an easy, steady profile action. His more correct proportions tipped the scales in his favour, BOB!

Italian Spinone Limit (2,1)

1) Pugh’s, Sunsanna All That Jazz at Gellini. 19 month old orange roan bitch. Longer cast than my BOB winner. Liked her head, obviously feminine with good proportions and divergence. Balanced angulation fore/aft, another who needs to spring in rib. Close both going/coming and covers the ground well in profile, decent coat.

Italian Spinone Open (1,1)

Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Puppy (0,0)

Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Junior (0,0)

Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Limit (0,0)

Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Open (3,1)

1) Hibbert’s, Ewtor Skyfall at Mindszenty. 2.5 year old dog, possessing excellent bone and substance with a super coat which won him the class. Liked the strength of his head and proportions of skull to muzzle. Very good angulation fore/aft and firm topline. Correct coming towards, could be a bit firmer going away with a stylish side gait, BOB.

2) Hope-Cliff & Hope-Ellershaw’s, Zoldmali Tudor for Galvikki (Imp Srb). 2.5 years male who possesses a nice outline, balanced but moderate angulation fore/aft, a well proportioned head and appealing expression. He has a strong topline. Would a bit more of him all over and a slightly harsher coat.

Weimaraner Puppy (1,0)

1) Hill’s, Weipowa Rizzini. While she is a bit raw, I thought this 6.5 month old bitch to be so full of promise! Loved her shape and proportions. Very feminine head with well sized ears. Reachy neck onto lovely shoulders and upper arm. Feet need to tighten with age. Decent body and topline for age. Very nice croup & tailset. Would not want anymore hind angulation. Once she settled her movement was positive both going/coming and covers the ground well in profile, good colour. Loved her naughtiness, BPIB!

Weimaraner Junior (2,1)

1) Hill’s, Weipowa Rizzini. See winner of Puppy.

Weimaraner Limit (4,2)

1) Hill’s, Weipowa Winnie Winchester. 2.5 year old bitch who was not entirely settled on the flooring today. Liked her type and proportions very much. Very pretty well proportioned head with good sized ears and decent reach of neck. Lovely shoulders and upper arm. Excellent spring of rib and depth of brisket. Level topline with slight slope to croup and well set tail. Liked her corresponding hind angulation. Once she settled she showed excellent reach and drive in profile and accurate front/hind action. Pleased to award her BOB!

2) Hawkins’, Smilek Massachusettes. 2.5 year old dog who was strong and upstanding on first appearance. More compact in body proportions than 1. Liked his masculine head and expression with long ears. Not quite the front of 1 but very well sprung ribs and short loin. Balanced hind angulation and firm topline. Tidy both ways on the move.

Weimaraner Open (2,1)

1) Stamp’s, Gunalt Two To Tango with Tynsil. 3 year old bitch who I understand is not long off a litter. I liked her type and obvious femininity. Very pretty head and expression and well sized ears. Her angulation is correct and well balanced fore/aft with a firm topline. The flooring did not aid her movement today but once settled she was sound and positive. Would like to see her again once she’s back in condition.

A main point of improvement for all the handlers in the JHA and Adult Handling classes was the accuracy of your away/back after completing the triangle. Please make sure your lines start and finish straight going away and directly coming back from the judge. If we applied this to handling in the breed ring, this would drastically improve the impression a judge will get of your dogs front and hind action when being assessed. This can be resolved by just taking your time and looking at where the judge is to ensure maximum accuracy. It was lovely to have such a good numerical and quality entry of handlers across all classes!

JHA 6-11 years (8,2)

1) Lacey Stevenson, handling a Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund. A wonderfully competent, smartly dressed young handler with so much potential for the future. She had an obvious rapport with her dog, her stacking on the floor and table was very good. She showed the teeth gently and clearly. Her pattern work was very good on the triangle but needs to make her away/back a little straighter, taking her time on the turns and ensuring she is going directly back to the judge will benefit her performance massively, well done indeed!

2) Lola Lovric, handling a Smooth Coated Chihuahua. Another very competent young lady handling a table breed. Her shadowing for a free-standing breed was very good. The table work was good although I would recommend setting her dog up a little closer to the front of the table, again like Lacey, she too showed the teeth well. Her triangle was done at an appropriate pace and was tidy. The away/back needs to be straighter and, while Lacey’s was also a little untidy, she managed to straighten it up a little more than Lola. Nothing a bit more practice and ring experience cannot resolve.

3) Maisie Allenby, handling a Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

JHA 12-16 years (5,2)

1) Daisy Mason, handling a Boxer. A very professional and polished performance overall. Daisy’s stack work was quick and breed-specific at all times; she showed the bite with care. Her patternwork on the triangle was accurate and at the right speed for her breed, on the away/back I would recommend you start at a fast walk and build up to the trot to ensure your lines are straight. You showed an obvious rapport with your dog and kept her interest at all times. Delighted to award you BJH!

2) Beth Pilkington, handling a Whippet. Another very professional young lady who was very conscious of ensuring her charge was settled and focussed at all times. Generally, her performance was very good overall but your lines away/back were a little more ‘off’ than Daisy’s and I would also recommend you tie your back so it doesn’t interfere with you leaning over to stack your dog on the floor.

3) Asia Barmby, handling a Welsh Springer Spaniel.

Adult Handling 17-39 years (7,0) – This was a very high quality class, thank you all so much for attending!

1) Sophie Wildig, handling a Japanese Shiba Inu. A late comer into the class but Sophie did not let this fluster her performance. Incredibly polished and professional performance, Sophie took her time to ensure her charge was settled upon entering the ring and ready to be immediately placed onto the table. Teeth work was spot on. Excellent lines and pace on the triangle and the best away/back of the handling class entry. Great work Sophie, very happy to award you BAH!

2) Fay Matthew-Jones, handling a Pomeranian. Fay obviously likes a challenge when she entered the ring with such a young puppy but this did not phase her! Her free-stacking work on the floor was spot on and she managed to retain the attention of her young charge while not dampening his spirit! Her table work was unflustered and very confident which included showing the teeth. Her pattern work was good on the triangle and she used an appropriate portion of the ring to allow easy assessment. I would recommend you try to reduce the amount of eye contact you give to your dog on the move which will ensure your lines are more accurate on the away/back, well done Fay!

3) Lorna Dandy, handling a Siberian Husky.

Adult Handling 40-59 years (5,1)

1) Angela Mason, handling a Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund. Like Fay in the previous class, Angela showed quite a young puppy and her performance was so attentive to ensuring her charge felt confident in her care at all times which really appealed to me. Her stacking on the floor and the table was accurate and breed specific while gently showing the teeth. Angela’s pattern work was very good throughout her triangle but her lines are a little ‘off’ on the away/back.

2) Jocelynne Cyprien, handling a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Another handler with a young dog. Jocelynne’s performance overall was confident, unphased and attentive to controlling but not dampening the spirit of her young dog. Just ensure you make the most of your ring space during the pattern work and that your turns are a bit tighter.

3) Lynn Stading, handling a Yorkshire Terrier.

Adult Handling 60 years & over (2,1)

1) Derek Pellowe, handling a Boston Terrier. What a smartly dressed and polite gentleman! Derek had his dog schooled superbly and they both showed a great rapport. Your lines and corners on the pattern work we good overall, I would try to keep your charge’s head up a little more and not have so much excess slack leash on the move. Your stack work was very solid and unflustered but just be aware that your dog can rock back and needs her front placing further underneath her, nothing a bit of training in front of a mirror cannot correct.
