AVNSC Gundog –
Puppy D/B – 4 entries
1st Moon - Foxhampton Fields of Gold – Sussex
A really lovely example of the breed – pure puppy at the moment but the potential that he shows is wonderful – Good depth of chest – allowing for plenty of heart room – lovely straight front legs of correct bone – nice feet. Lovely head with expressive and lovely tight eyes – When settled moved really well and a pleasure to judge – I look forward to watching his progress – BP & Gundog Puppy Group 4
2nd Murray & McKenzie - Jaclee Dream the Impossible – Am Cocker
Needed to settle more on the move so hard to assess movement – good length to height ratio giving a correct and true American Cocker outline – nice front and lovely head peace.
Junior D/B – 1 entry
1st Murray & McKenzie - Zefir Ot Chicarnoj Kompani (Imp Blr) – Am Cocker
Beautiful head, nicely rounded with expressive eyes correct colour – good reach of neck leading to correct shoulders – good short strong loin with correct topline – good rear angulation – a lovely happy powerful mover that just caught your eye on the move, really went well in the challenge. RBOB
Post Grad D/B – 3 entreis – 1 Absent
1st Skipping & Gough Pelhamcourt Miss Markle at Nelbells – Am Cocker
Nice movement – good dark eye, good topline sloping nicely to tail, good hind angulation – would just like more neck to complete the picture
2nd Skippings & Gough – Carbonnie Handsome Lad – Am Cocker
Nicely proportioned throughout with good lay of shoulder, would prefer more drive on the move
Open D/B – 7 entries
Such a pleasure of a class to judge and always hard to compare differing breeds together, as much as you are judging to their own breed standard it makes it hard to choose as there were some lovely examples of the breeds here !
1st Evans Sh Ch Yorkham Rocking Rudolph – Sussex – BOB
What a pleasure to go over – everything you would want in a Sussex Spaniel – solid structure, nothing exaggerated or weak, giving a good impression that he could last the day on a shoot – lovely muscle tone, good head with nice curve with good stop, lovely frowns giving that classic Sussex expression, beautifully expressive dark eyes. Settled better on 2nd movement but think he was not partial to the flooring.
2nd Thorogood SH CH Winhampton Over the Yardarm of Harrifield JW ShCM – Clumber
Again a real pleasure to judge this dog – I have been in the ring with him many times so was lovely to get my hands on him and boy he did not disappoint. Lovely deep chest with good shoulder placement good strength of loin allowing good movement – a really hard choice between these 2 .
Any Variety Gundog Veteran D/B – 14 entries – Best Gundog Veteran
Totally spoilt for choice in this class – a real honour to judge some wonderful Veterans and thank you very much for bringing them under me – you all deserve a huge round of applause as they were all in stunning condition with good muscle tone and proves that showing is not just for the youngsters.
1st Tye - Kyuna Olympic Arrow of Tymora SHCM – Gordon Setter
7yrs old – Lovely strong neck leading to good shoulder placement, head of correct proportions, good chiselling under eye, good dark eye with that special aloof & intelligent expression that Gordons have. A pleasure to watch on the move as covered the ground with ease.
2nd Barkley SH CH Cherryheath’s Mr Mischief JW ShCM – Welsh Springer
8yr old – again I have seen this one in the ring with me but never gone over – a real pleasure and you can see why he has done so much winning. Good solid structure of correct proportions, not overdone in any area, classic head with correct planes and lovely dark eye, nice length of back with short loin to allow for good rear angulation and lovely muscled to complete the picture. On the day I just preferred the flowing movement of the Gordon, but a hard decision.
English Springer Spaniels
Puppy D/B – 4 entries – 2 absent
1st Nicholson Kingsheath Ruby Riott
10mths old – A stronger head piece than I would like, but balanced for the rest of his body and at this age could settle into his body as he grows. Good Topline, nice reach of neck showing strength, correct shoulder angulation with nice short loin and good stifles.
2nd Twilley Donarden Sweet Whisper
A real baby and a bit overawed by it all but settled more as she got into the swing of it all. Very pretty head that I preferred to 1st – lovely length of back not to long but correct for height ratio.
Junior D/B – no entries
Post Grad – 1 entry – absent
Open D/B – 2 entries – 1 absent
Walker Sh Ch Dexbenella Atticus Finch
Mature dog in perfect coat and condition. Gorgeous head, correct breadth rising from foreface with adequate chiselling under eyes, flat cheek bones to give that correct stamp of an English Springer head – no mistaking the breed – exactly as you want. Good reach of neck, nice depth of chest leading onto lovely straight front making front assembly just spot on to allow the best of movement on really well-rounded strong feet holding his frame well. Powered round the ring but still showed his character – just fab! He settled better in the bigger ring for the Group and just flowed elegantly with true power. BOB & Gundog Group 2
Welsh Springer Spaniel
Puppy D/B – 3 entries
1st Barnes Nyliram Twist and shout with Barhi
Nice balance to back length and height ratio –allowing for a flowing action on the move when settled. Good head piece, tight eye with correct colour giving a soft kind expression. Good depth of brisket with nice tight elbows holding her frame well, good spring of rib with good short loin allowing strength on the move. For one so young such a sound mover with great muscle tone and substance throughout. Eye catching from any angle and one to keep an eye on for the future. She settled so much better each run out and in the Puppy Group really shone BP, BOB, Gundog Puppy Group 3
2nd Buckwell Killena Dance in the Moonlight
A real baby who will take time to come into herself. She settled better than 3rd on the day.
Junior D/B – 1 entry
1st Barkley Chanangel Mr Whodat at Cherryheath JW
Strong compact boy, nice height ratio giving a good and adequate length of back to give correct classic outline. Good front angulation but needs to tighten up on rear thigh and hocks on the move – would just prefer a little more drive but again a young boy at only 15mths so time on his side. Good tight eye with good expression. RBOB
Post Grad – 1 entry absent
Open D/B – 3 entries – 1 absent
1st Charles Stagarth a Kind of Magic
A smaller girl than I would like, but correct throughout for her height and length ratio. Good depth of chest and nice spring of rib. Would like to see her more animated with drive on the move.
2nd Tubb Slapestones Tidal Wave for Alsutu
A larger boy throughout, however lost topline on the move today. Preferred the angulation and neck of winner.
Gundog Group
May I firstly say how honoured I was to judge such a wonderful Group – I ended up shortlisting a fair few as many deserved a second look at – actually I could have watched many of these move several times over as there were some stunning dogs amongst the Group and it was a joy to watch them use the excellent size ring to their advantage – in the end you have to just make a decision and I am sure another day the placings would be different but on the day these were my outstanding ones.
Group 1 – Smith & Reardon Winterwell Maida Stone – GSP
I can only say 3 words to describe this dog - wow wow wow – from putting your hands on him to hoping that he moves as well as he is made he did not put a foot wrong. Yes he fidgeted on the stack on occasion but he never stopped showing off his superb construction & amazing muscle tone and nothing took away from him – Just loved this boy! Gundog Group & Puppy Group - The icing on my day’s judging was seeing him win Reserve Best Puppy in Show – a truly remarkable boy who I think will have such a bright future.
Group 2 – Walker SH CH Dexbennella Atticus Finch – Eng Springer
This boy just got better and better having the large ring to really show off his excellent movement
Group 3 Hutchinson Quills Mint Julep with Waterton JW (Imp Cze) – Flat Coated Retriever
Another lovely girl that looked like she could go on all day – she kept a lovely topline throughout & didn’t falter on her stride – lovely muscle tone and great drive.
Group 4 – Upton-Lovett & Upton Gunalt Lustrous with Roydack – Weimaraner
Not overdone in anyway – showing lovely drive on the move.
Gundog Puppy Group
Another lovely Group of pups that I really enjoyed having the privilege to go over – it is a lot to ask of puppies in a Group as for many it is the longest and biggest class they will have to concentrate in – so I always make allowances for that and nice to see them enjoying themselves as long as at the crucial time they show themselves off well.
Group 1 - Smith & Reardon Winterwell Maida Stone – GSP
I can’t really add to the above critique of him – he is so mature and substantial with great showman just a joy to see him move again – still unfaltering and showing his socks off right to the very end.
Group 2 – Candiliz Funkey Monkey at Clandrift – Flat Coated Ret
What a character – just oozed breed type and such fit and functional – great movement
Group 3 – Barnes Nyliram Twist and Shout with Barhi – Welsh Springer
She really excelled herself in this class and was a joy to see her settle on the move and stride out with such characteristic breed movement, still such a baby but really liked her
Group 4
1st Moon - Foxhampton Fields of Gold – Sussex
Totally settled into her stride in this class – so lovely and sound in both type and movement – a real pleasure & I am sure will only get better and better as she matures
Any Variety Junior D/B Stakes – 45 entries
1st Carr Daveyluvs D’Artagnan – Bichon Frise
What a little eye catcher – moved with great drive and purpose keeping the classic proud head carriage – beautifully presented with correct coat and shown to perfection – once you got your hands under the coat he did not disappoint – lovely deep brisket and good length from withers to tailset equalling his height – tough choice between my 1st and 2nd – both different but equally as eye catching
2nd Zentaur Srop it Like its Hot for Oilt (ai) – Newfoundland
Again a classy mover – great condition and showing great power and free rolling movement. Substantial bone but not overdone – even at this young age showing a powerful majestic performance on the move. Lovely broad and large head with square muzzle sitting on strong shoulders with lovely straight front – tight between 1st and 2nd but just not the maturity in body of 1st– was pleased to see that she also won the Working Group
