Terrier Judge: Graham Peers 

The Club’s committee surprised me by the invitation to judge the Terriers and the Group; although still a breeder/exhibitor; I, myself, had called it a day from judging at Open Shows but temptation led me to accept the appointment and thankful that it did, for this was a show which I enjoyed. 

Many thanks go to my Chief Steward Chris Osmond and his assistant, Louise Peers, for keeping the ring flowing.  

Yes, I would have liked a larger entry of dogs, yet was very pleased with the dogs which were there on the day and thank all the exhibitors for allowing me to assess their dogs. The dogs were equally examined, their movement watched and placed in accordance with my judgement. 

Scottish Terrier 

PG (4 – 3 abs) 

1 - Brown’s, Lexi of Southleigh – B - is a 9+ month puppy shown in a good double coat; a correct head in proportion to her size with neat well-held ears; good bite and teeth; deep brown eyes well set under her long eyebrows. Loved her medium length of neck leading into sloping shoulders; nicely boned forelegs with well-padded feet. Medium length of back; level topline leading to a well set on tail; wide buttocks with muscular deep thighs. Been well-schooled in her movement, both front and rear were seen to be straight and parallel. Despite  only one in the breed, she fully deserved her awards – BP, BOB & Terrier Puppy Group 3 

Staffordshire Bull Terrier 

Special Yearling (2) 

1 – SK & L J Marshallsay’s, Fergustaff Tudor Queen - B – a red pied/white with an excellent feminine head of the desired proportions, neat ears, dark round eyes, correct scissor bite and strong underjaw; excellent shortish neck tapered down to well-laid back shoulders; forefront is square with good width and depth of brisket; straight forelegs with well-padded feet; good tuck up at loin; close-coupled; level topline down to her correct tail carriage; muscular hind quarters with angulation balanced in keeping with her forequarters. Not only possessing parallel movement, fore-and-aft, but also agile enough to move with a strong drive. BOB & Terrier Group 3    

2 – Corti’s, Biggleswick Billy No Mates – D – a head to die for - but with a judge that been taught to cover a whole dog. 

A red with black mask and dark ears; excellent head with a clean lipped strong muzzle and a dark eye; straight forelegs with good bone and the correct space for its nice width of chest; tapered muscular neck but led into an overloaded shoulder; enough depth and length of rib; well-muscled throughout; found its hindquarters lacking in angulation and balance to its forequarters; moved well with drive. 

Open (1) 

1 - L J Marshallsay’s, Fergustaff Jack Frost – D -  an upstanding fawn and white dog which has a stunning head with dark eyes; distinct stop; well-pronounced cheek muscles; good mouth and strong underjaw; short neck into good shoulders; compacted body with nice spring of rib and a good topline; close-coupled; strong muscular hindquarters with good angulation and hocks well-let down. A balanced dog which moved well in both directions 

Cesky Terrier 

Post Graduate (2) 

1 – Samson’s, Shasgav My Immortal – B - approaching 2.5 years this girl meets the ideal height of the breed; she has a well-proportioned head with a pleasing expression and a distinct stop; good length of neck and well-laid shoulders and straight forelegs; brisket of the correct shape with well-sprung ribs and rises well over the loin; good set on of tail; muscular hindquarters with well-angulated rear quarters. Well-handled and moved confidently both coming and going. 

2 – Samson’s, Opera Boheme des Hauteurs de La Sole – B – a very promising 9 months old puppy outclassed by a good mature bitch but the outing will have done her well. 

She is of nice type with a good head with lovely set-on ears and a good mouth; excellent strong neck of good length going down into well-laid shoulders; good length and well-proportioned body for her age with well-sprung ribs and the desired rise over the loin; pleasing fore and hindquarters with round and arched feet. Playful on the move, yet allowing me to assess her movement, this I found to be sound. BP & Terrier Puppy Group 2 

Open (1) 

1 - Samson’s, Shasgav Sound of Silence – B – litter sister to 1 in PG. Much of the same findings made on her sister are also appropriate to her. She too is of a compact type with good proportions but a little bit closer to the Breed Standard and that separates the two sisters. Well-proportioned head with a definite feminine expression; high set ears and placed close to her cheeks; good neck and well laid shoulders; straight front forelegs; good medium length of body rising to well-arched loin; good topline but wished her tail set-on could have been just a little bit lower. Found her overall movement to be sound, both fore-and-aft. BOB 

Bedlington Terrier 

Post Graduate (3 - 2abs) 

1 - Southcott’s, Jobanker Suger Suger – B - 16 months old with good dark coat; good head proportions well-covered with a stop; ears a little away from its cheeks; good reach of neck into well-laid shoulders; ribs down to the elbows; body flat ribbed, muscular and arched with tuck-in on its underline; feet with thick closed-up pads; moved okay. 

Open (3 – 1 abs) 

1 – McManus, L’End Show Mystery Uneverse – D – still a Junior, this very nice blue is an outstanding prospect for the breed. Turned out immaculately, the head and skull met the Breed Standard perfectly by its thin ears set-on low and hanging flat to the cheek; by its dark eyes and by the profuse top-knot without any stop but most all from its masculine expression. He has a good length of neck; sloping shoulders; an excellent front with straight forelegs; good depth to chest with flat ribs; muscular hindquarters and well-let-down hocks. Shown in a super coat and muscular condition, he moved soundly in both directions. BOB & Terrier Group 4 

2 – Southcott’s, Jobanker Chit Chat – B - not the head of 1; correct bite; small bright eyes; thin ears; good reach of neck; sloping shoulder; deep chest with flat ribs; correct tail carriage; her movement was fine. But to me, she is too long in the leg to have the body balance, which the Breed Standard states, as being required. 

West Highland White Terrier 

Open (1) 

1 - Cooper’s, Brorastar Urban Spaceman – D – excellent overall shape; good head with deep stop; correct ear placement; good scissor bite and large teeth; super lay of shoulders; short back; shown in excellent coat and moved with drive. BOB

Border Terriers 

Special Yearling (2) 

1 – Sansom’s, Tarkaswell Waltzin Matilda – B – she only qualified to enter by 10 days which pleased me for I found her to be a very good prospect for the breed.  

She surprised me by being so sure of herself on the table and came across as both neat and feminine; with correct head; scissor bite with decent size of teeth; dark eyes; medium length of neck; well-laid shoulders; good forequarters with straight forelegs; ribs carried well back; correct tail set-on high; good padded feet and moved with drive. She is a well-balanced young bitch.  BP & Best in Terrier Puppy Group 1  

2 – Gibbings’, Earthtaw Kafir Lily – B – 2 months older than 1 but a little bit unsettled in the ring but was fine on the table. Nice bitch with good otter shaped head and length of neck; good front and length of body; well-angulated both in the forequarters and the hindquarters; she was sure of herself when on the move but unsettled when standing. 

Post Graduate (5 – 1 abs) 

1 – Pile’s, Heading for Home at Moleschamber – D – an 18 months old mature grizzle dog which is up to size but can be scanned; he has a definite masculine expression on his correct shaped head; well-set on neck into well-laid shoulders; good front with straight forelegs; narrow enough in body; firm topline; well-made hindquarters; hocks well-let down; shown in a harsh coat and loose pelt; very sound movement on a loose lead.  BOB 

2 – Mitchell’s, Tarkatale Star Seeker – B – well-proportioned bitch with an attractive head; good mouth; dark eyes; good neck and shoulders; straight front; well-angulated rear; happy on the move. 

Open (3 

1 – Gibbing’s, Earthtaw Jessica Rabbit – B – a well-constructed grizzle which caught my eye on entering the ring and stood in profile, this shown her to be a well-balanced bitch. I was not disappointed in anyway when on the table; a pleasing and typical Border head with a strong feminine expression coming from within her dark eyes; good mouth; well-placed ears; nice reach of neck into her withers; soundly constructed forequarters with straight legs; deep and narrow body; muscular angulated hindquarters going down to her well-let-down hocks. Held her tail gaily and moved extremely well whilst doing the triangular walk.  RBOB 

2 – Pile’s, Earthtaw Jasper Carrot at Moleschamber – D – a light grizzle with a handsome masculine head with a keen expression; decent length of neck down to well-laid shoulders; deep and narrow body with a firm topline and the correct tailset; his muscular rear angulation balanced-out with its forequarters; he moved soundly with the correct parallel tracking. 

Dandie Dinmont Terrier 

Open (2 – 1 abs) 

1 – France’s, Miss Sophie di Lunda Caprese at Torbrae – B – this is a quality bitch and a genuine showgirl with a beautiful head, ears and with plenty of topknot; a strong neck into excellent shoulders; a well-constructed front and enough bone; nice spring to rib and has the correct topline; strong in loin and good tail placement; very muscular quarters; shown in a quality double coat and put down to perfection; moved with a strong drive. BOB & Best in Terrier Group 

AVNSC Terrier 

Post Graduate (2) 

1 – Price’s, Magairlin Silver Spur – Irish Terrier D - 13 months old and a handsome dog; very typical of this age when still having to mature further; excellent head and expression; clean skull; small well-set-on neat ears; good length of neck and decent shoulders; good legs and feet; well-ribbed with short loin; good topline and tailset; strong but moderately angulated hindquarters; well-presented and a handful for his handler.   Best NSC Terrier & Terrier Group 2 

2 – Phipps’, Katilley Action Packed at Tufterslodge – JRT D - a smart handsome youngster of good type; flat skull; dark eye; keen lively expression; good neck and shoulders; good depth of brisket; well ribbed but spans easily; strong muscular loin; well-balance; well-handled and he has sound movement. NSC Best Puppy & Terrier Group 4 

Open (2) 

1 – Chugg’s, Chatmoss Chaterbox at Tufterslodge – JRT D - flat skull; neat ears; dark eye; good length of neck; well-laid shoulders; very slight rise over the loin; good tail set-on; free moving and with good length of stride.   Reserve Best NSC 

2 – Phipps’, Fair & Brave Great Glen at Tufterslodge – JRT B - flat skull; neat ears; dark eye; good bone; straight forelegs; well-ribbed but spans easily; strong loin; very good hindquarters which were well muscled; tail set-on too low; very sound, very free moving and presented to best advantage. 

AV Terrier – Puppy (2 – 1 abs) 

1 – Sansom’s, Tarkaswell Bond Girl – Border Terrier B – an 8.5 months old puppy; I liked her general shape and body lines but with further growth still to come, these can change. Pleasing head and expression; nice flat skull; correct bite; medium length of neck into excellent shoulders; spans easily; correct coat; handled well and sound on the move.  

AV Terrier – Veteran (2 – 1 abs) 

1 – Waycott’s, UKUSA Rhapsody for Waybully – Bull Terrier – B - Red/White 7 years old good head and expression, round eyes, correct bite, neat rose ears, good neck, well boned and good front with good neat round feet, good body, ample rib, level topline, correct tail placement, good bend of stifle, moved and handled well.       Terrier Group Veteran
