Hawick & District Canine Society

Hawick and District Canine Society Open Show 30th June 2019

Thank you so much to the committee for this judging appointment and for your warm hospitality extended to Debbie and I. A lovely, friendly show and a great venue with nice big rings allowing the exhibits to really get going and show their movement. What a pity the weather came with a vengeance for the BIS. Thank you for the support of my stewards. Really pleased with my entry with some really close decisions.

Irish Setter critique

Puppy class (1,0)

1. Lee’s Leesett Orchard Romance.

Much to admire about this 11 month old dog. Handsome head with well defined occiput and low set ears. He has a lovely straight, dark coat. Good forechest and angulation. Well balanced. Nice gently sloping topline once his handler settled him in the stack. Moved well in places. With maturity I’m sure he will do well.

Yearling (7,3)

1. Green’s Braidmount Dreamed a Dream for Glencarron. A very pretty 20 month old bitch with a typical Irish expression with raised brows. Lovely head with low set ears. Balanced and well constructed with good angulation front and back. Moved well for her handler which gave her the edge over her litter sister.

2. Tupper and Rosie’s Staratlanta Shankly’s Fire. A very mature dog for his age presented in a deep red coat. Muscular and well constructed he looks the part when stacked with a excellent top line and correct tailset. Strong forechest. Just lacked a little in consistency on the move on this occasion.

3. Hunter and Brown’s Braidmount In My Life

Post Graduate (3,1)

1. Davie’s Lochfrae Nina Simone. This two year old bitch had that effect on me that only an Irish Setter can have. She looked at me and I was smitten! Her raised brows gave her that typical Irish expression from that classic head. Nice neckline flowing into a gently sloping topline. So well balanced with no exaggeration with a deep chest and well sprung ribs. Moved enthusiastically with her handler/owner. Feathering will develop and complete the picture in time. Just preferred her in the challenge to the Open winner.

2. Murchison’s Pawsword Paperback Writer. Loved this boys head and expression reminding me so much of his mum. Nicely balanced dog with a deep red coat. Nice topline and tail. Preferred the type and movement of the winner on the day.

Open (4,2)

1. Tupper and Rosie’s Staratlanta Elliot. A real flashy dog who always gives his best for his owner/handler. A typical Irish expression with a dark eye. Deep red, heavy coat covers his muscular, well constructed frame. Moved in unison with his handler maintaining his topline and with a slashing tail. Considered him long and hard for BOB.

2. Gracie’s Vistador Diesel in the Dust Summergate. Strong, muscular dog. Strong neckline with a good forechest and well off for bone. Deep chest and good spring of rib. Dark coat. Preferred the head and movement of the winner.
