I am sorry this has taken so long to produce, but I have not felt well lately. I hope to be on the road to recovery now.
JUDGE’S REPORT OF ISLE OF WIGHT CANINE ASSOCIATION OPEN SHOW ON 6TH APRIL 2019
Thank you to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge your lovely show. I exhibited at your autumn event and thought you had such a lovely friendly, happy atmosphere, so wanted to come again. My dog gained her Show Certificate of Merit as a result. It was a long way to travel, but it was worth it. I love crossing on the ferry with the super scenery. Thanks to my very efficient steward and your lovely, friendly exhibitors.
My BEST IN SHOW was Drake’s Pointer, Ansona Queen of Hearts at Clamerkin ShCM, who I had awarded Best Gundog. An outstanding mover for her age of nearly eight, she would have qualified to be Best Veteran in Show as well. Correctly proportioned head with well-defined stop. Lovely ears and eyes, with slightly arched neck. She has good shoulder placement with a slightly sloping topline. Well sprung ribs and correct loin. Muscled hindquarters, with well laid down hocks, presenting a super outline. To win Best in Show, I was looking for a dog with lovely outline, showmanship and wonderful movement to command the ring. I thought she had it all. I am surprised she is a not a champion, but understand she has done a lot of winning in her lifetime and had won at a Pointer club show the week before.
RESERVE BEST IN SHOW: - Foglia’s Wire-Haired Dachshund, Kentixen Abies Grandis. Well balanced, being moderately long in body with good bone. Nice brindle coat of harsh texture, with lovely markings. Correct head with nice strong teeth, well set ears, slightly arched neck. Good strong breast bone. Back reasonably level, well sprung ribs, with slightly arched loin. Well-developed hindquarters and good feet. Moved freely with drive from behind. Well-presented and handled.
BEST PUPPY IN SHOW: - Lathwell’s Boxer, Samsconat Paddy Saul at Wihtgar. I fell in love with this 7 month old dog as soon as he entered the ring. Great temperament and personality, attending his first show. Very well developed in bone and muscle for a dog so young. Well balanced head, in proportion to body. Correct eyes and mouth. Nice skull and ear placement. Round neck with elegant arch. Super flowing square, slightly sloping body, with very deep chest, reaching to elbows with excellent forechest. Well-muscled hindquarters with good angulation. Moved well with reach and drive from the rear, when settled, getting better as time went on.
RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW: - Langford’s Lhasa Apso, Farrenmills Summer Moon over Quaytown. Another lovely puppy, quite mature for his age. Super, well-proportioned head. Moderately narrow skull, not quite flat. Dark, medium sized oval eyes, giving lovely expression. Correct bite with full dentition. Straight forelegs. Correct length of body, balanced and compact with level topline. Good angulation. Lovely round, cat-like feet with firm pads. High set well carried tail, well feathered. Exceptional movement. Abundant coat coming through well, of correct texture.
BEST VETERAN IN SHOW: - Langford’s Lhasa Apso, Quaytown Hear it for the Boys. Quite a name for this 8 year old chap, from the same kennel, who really did look wonderful for his age. I see he wins lots of awards on the Island, so no surprise. Little to fault him on. Super, well-proportioned head, with correct bite. Strong, well arched neck. Straight forelegs, correct length of body with level topline. Stacked and on the move holds himself well. A real natural showman, enjoying his day out. His coat is his glory, with a long, heavy, straight, hard top coat with moderate undercoat. A credit to his owner, for keeping his coat so well. Excellent mover.
RESERVE BEST VETERAN IN SHOW: - Holbrook’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Marlhouse Natasha. Another veteran who is a credit to her owner, to be presented and shown so well at the age of 12 and a half. Moved like a dog half her age, with such a lovely gay, friendly personality. Ultra-feminine head, flat skull, beautiful large, round eyes, with long, high set well feathered ears. Lovely short-coupled body, with level topline that she held well. Correct long, silky coat with plenty of feathering. Presented in excellent condition. But she won her place on movement, excellent for an elderly toy.
BEST RESERVE BEST OF BREED IN SHOW: - Rackett’s Welsh Springer Spaniel, Islanza Spotless Duck (AI). One of my favourite gundog breeds. He gave the impression of being fit for purpose, being well balanced and an excellent mover. Good, balanced head, slightly dome skull with clearly defined stop, muzzle straight and of medium length. Nice eyes and neat low set ears. Straight foreleg, well boned and nicely muscled. Nice round feet. In excellent coat. Moved smoothly and powerfully, covering the ground, with drive from the rear.
SECOND RESERVE BEST OF BREED IN SHOW: - Nolcini’s Irish Terrier, Holbam Celtic Kate ShCM. One of my favourite terrier breeds. Good length of head with dark eye and flat skull. Nice length of neck. Straight forelegs, nicely boned and muscled. Very well balanced body, of good length and ribbed back. Muscled hindquarters and hocks well let down. Well set tail. Excellent coat, both in texture and colour. Moved well and parallel. Put down in hard condition. Handled well.

A.V.GUNDOG VETERAN (6) 1. Cotton’s German Shorthaired Pointer, Winterwell Miss Tified. This bitch is in fabulous shape for 12 years old, especially on the move, so true with good extension and drive, winning her the class. Well balanced, giving a super outline when stood and on the move. She has a well-proportioned and lovely head. Kind eye, giving a gentle expression. Nicely bodied, with good depth to the brisket, well developed forechest and good tail carriage. BEST VETERAN IN GROUP.
2. Blackley & Salero’s Cocker Spaniel, Sh Ch Glenntree Ruby Slipper JW ShCM. Another lovely veteran, who certainly does not look nearly 11 years old. A very worthy champion. Nothing between these two lovely old ladies, so I picked the older one. For an old larger dog to have such a wonderful body and movement at 12 is a real credit to the owner. However, I thought this ‘merry’ Coker was wonderful as well and would have loved to have taken her home. Lovely in every way. She must still be In contention with the younger girls.
