Newport & District Agricultural Society

NEWPORT & DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OPEN SHOW ON 13TH JULY 2019 - UTILITY GROUP

Thank you to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge the majority of the Utility group. I had an excellent entry, both quantity and quality, including a couple of champions. A very special thank you to the exhibitors for entering such lovely dogs for me to judge. I love agricultural shows, so it was extra special for me, sitting around the main ring of the show later.

GERMAN SPITZ (MITTEL)

OPEN (1) 1. Bellingham’s Grizwold Moons Mystic Charm. Nice example of the breed. Good pigmentation for such a light colour. Well proportioned head, good front and lay of shoulder. Nicely bodied under a beautiful double coat. Tail set high and curled over back. Moved very well. BEST OF BREED.

GERMAN SPITZ (KLEIN)

JUNIOR (1) 1. Mole’s Kysiena Enter the Dragon at Molead. Just a year old and needs to mature more. Good mouth and temperament.

OPEN (3) 1. Jackson & Minshall’s Perrymere Just Bertie JW. A good example of the breed. Lovely cream coat, with good pigmentation. Lovely balanced head with super small, triangular erect ears. Correct oval eye. Super compact body. Nice small cat-like feet. Good tail set, curled over back. Moved perfectly. In correct double coat, presented very well. BEST OF BREED. 2. Mole’s Bob the Soldier at Molead. Impressed with his colour, of a rich brown and white parti colour, with lovely dark brown pigments on nose and eye rims. Well proportioned head with good ears. Nicely constructed body.

BULLDOG POST GRADUATE (1) It was good to judge a couple of Bulldogs, after attending & passing a Bulldog BAD the week before. 1. Parker’s Albionpride Miss Jacques. Correct shaped head with furrow from defined stop to middle of skull. Correct amount of wrinkle over nose. Six small front teeth between canines, but I would have preferred to not have seen them when mouth shut. Eyes nicely placed and correct ears. Broad shoulders. Body OK.

OPEN (1) 1. Parker’s Albionpride Miss Furtado. Litter sister to above and could see why she was in a higher class. Good clean head, nice expression. Flat skull with enough wrinkle, well placed rose ears. Clear dark round eyes and excellent nostrils. Mouth OK. Straight forelegs with nice feet. Good tacked on shoulders. Correct topline, with slight fall behind the shoulders, rise to loin and curving down to tail. Well angulated rear with good muscle. Correct length of tail, set well. Moved soundly. BEST OF BREED.

LHASA APSO PUPPY (4) 1. Scholes’ Brackengold Tis Rossgilde. A real showman, beautifully presented and handled. Super balanced head with correct expression. Strong neck, well laid shoulders and front assembly. Level topline, with well-developed hindquarters and good muscled angulation. Correct feet and tail. Moved free and jauntily. Lovely coat. BEST PUPPY. 2. Baker’s Jadeish Dilemma. Another very nice puppy, which appeared longer than the winner. Well balanced, masculine head. Lovely eye and expression. Nice length of neck. Super body and topline. Good hindquarters. Excellent movement, he just flowed around the ring. 3. Harris’ Vonstry Silk Breeze. 4. Logan’s Spyanki Heaven Knows.

JUNIOR (3) 1. Baker, Baker & Watts Catley’s Zanamop Hot Gossip. Just 12 months old and wanting to play up. Super head, with strong, well arched neck. Nice length of body with level topline. Presented in good condition and well-muscled. Super coat, nice high set tail, carried over the back. Moved well. 2. Logan’s Spyanki Exclusive Kisses. Only 9 months old. More immature than 1 and needs to body up. But a very nice type with good head and expression. Level topline. High set tail and moved OK. 3. Harris’ Vonstry Black Brigade.

POST GRADUATE (2) 1. Baker, Baker & Watts Catley’s Zanamop Hot Gossip. Repeat. 2. Dodd’s Remrah Hear My Roar with Kobuna. Good head, nice mouth, dark eyes, nicely placed wide apart. Ears correct. Strong neck. Good topline and rear quarters. High set tail, well carried. In super coat, condition and nicely muscled.

OPEN (4) 1. Logan’s Spyanki Oh Happy Day JW ShCEx. Excellent mature dog presented to perfection. Masculine head, dark, oval eyes and well feathered ears and strong arched neck. Well laid shoulders, straight front and correct round feet. Nice length of body, with level topline, good spring of ribs and well angulated rear. Good tailset, with tail carried well over his back. Moved freely and jauntily, flowing around the ring. Presented in excellent coat and condition. BEST OF BREED. 2. Harris’ Vonstry Cherished. A nice bitch. Well balanced head, dark eyes, nicely feathered ears. Good legs and feet. Nicely ribbed, level top line, high set tail. Did not appear to have the length of body as 1. Moved well. Just did not have that extra sparkle and coat of the dog.

SHIH TZU

PUPPY (1) 1. Moore’s Shirmins Stairway to Heaven. A ‘raw 7 month old puppy. Head and body OK. Nicely arched neck. In good coat. Regrettably, I could not really assess his movement. BEST PUPPY.

POST GRADUATE (3) 1. Burkey’s Jazala Hurrah. Preferred head to No 2. Typical broad, round head, dark round eyes, large leathers, with ’chrysanthemum’ muzzle and nose slightly tip-tilted. Good arch to neck and correct angles at the front, resulting in good reach when moving. Nice length of body with level topline. Muscular hindquarters. Super tail carriage, heavily coated and carried gaily. In good coat. 2. Moore’s Shirmins San Pareil. Head OK. Good bone and tidy feet. Well ribbed and level topline. In super coat. Moved OK. Tail carriage let him down, to complete the picture.

OPEN (3) 1. Burkey’s Shionah Mid Knight by Jazala. Strong masculine broad head. Super mouth and bite. Lovely ‘chrysanthemum’ muzzle. Well laid shoulders. Muscular legs with good bone. Level topline. Tail set on high, heavily plumed. Muscled hindquarters, giving exceptionally good movement, flowing around the ring, showing his pads. In full, super coat. BEST OF BREED. 2. Thomas’ Jazzle Jasmine. Head OK, with round, dark eyes. Would prefer her a little thinner, which would have given her more style. Good level topline. Nice tail-set with tail carried gaily over back. In lovely coat.

AKITA

PUPPY (2) Two young puppies, well grown, with a lot of substance and bone. 1. Duffield’s Meiho’s Drop the Beat. 6 months old bitch puppy. Preferred this one’s head. Chest wide and deep, with well-developed forechest. Nicely bodied. Strong and muscular hindquarters. Moderate angulation and stifle. Moved well. BEST PUPPY. 2. Mason’s Tevelens Trailblazer at Arcticwolf. 6 month old dog puppy. Well bodied, with strong and muscular hindquarters. Moderate angulation and stifle. Tail set high, well curled over back.

JUNIOR (1) 1. Louvet & Pears’ Satrebor Nevada at Shaluna. Good head, with defined stop. Ears correct shape and size, but I would have preferred them set wider apart. Well bodied with good substance and bone.

POST GRADUATE (2) 1. Louvet & Pears’ Blackgronix Cariad with Satrebor. Lovely temperament. Mature bitch with good bone. Well proportioned head, with nice ears, set correctly. Good length of body, level topline and well developed forechest. Good depth of coat. Moderate angulation and stifle. She needed to be moved faster to best advantage.

OPEN (5) 1. Hughes’ Finkime Ready Teddy Go. Handsome, well boned, masculine dog. Well proportioned head, having good breadth of flat skull, well placed ears and nice almond eyes. Thick, strong, muscular neck. Super body proportions. High set, thick tail. Dense coat. Moved vigorously and powerfully around the ring, showing off his Akita nature, which won him the class. BEST OF BREED. 2. Hocking’s Harivo’s Hot to Trot ShCM. A lovely bitch, nice overall shape, well boned and muscular. Correct head proportions, good ear placement and almond eyes. Super front, with tight elbows and forelegs, well boned and straight. Chest wide and deep with well-developed forechest, which I liked. Nicely proportioned body with good hindquarters. Super tailset with double curled tail carried correctly. Went soundly, just lacked the sparkle of 1. 3. Duffield’s Meiho All That Glitters. 4. Greenough’s Enyeto’s Tania Hyde for Tevelen.

ANY VARIETY NOT SEPARATELY CLASSIFIED UTILITY

PUPPY (8) 1. Jones & Saunders’ Dalmatian, Dallydyl Merry Fortune. Two lovely Dalmatian puppies, who were litter sisters and not much to choose between them. However, on the day, I considered this one moved the best, but lacked the temperament of my second placed. Could easily swap on another day. A nice balanced bitch, with well-proportioned head, dark eye and well set ears. Good arch of neck, well sprung ribs and strong loin. Moved very well. Needs more ring training to improve her personality. BEST A.V.N.S.C. PUPPY UTILITY. 2. Evans & Saunders’ Dalmatian, Dallydyl My Cousin Rachel. Another lovely puppy bitch, who had a super, outgoing personality and ring presence. Very nice outline, head of good proportions with nice dark eye & well set ears. POST GRADUATE (4) 1. Evan’s Dalmatian, Lucky Prince of Oaks Farm at Troikadal. Nice mature dog, so well balanced, giving a lovely outline. Well proportioned masculine head, free from coarseness. Good length of neck, leading to well set shoulders and good depth of chest. Lovely set, straight front legs, nicely muscled, well up on pasterns. Good free, sound movement with plenty of drive. Well distributed spots. Presented in good working condition and handled well. BEST A.V.N.S.C. UTILITY.

OPEN (3) 1. Duffield’s Japanese Akita Inu, Hasaki Team Nobu Meiho (Imp Serb.) A good example of the breed. Lovely shape and outline, with that ‘aloof’ personality. Correct head with nice triangular, thick ears. Correct crest of neck and good shoulders. Good topline with good tail-set, carried correctly. Well muscled hindquarters with well-developed thighs, giving him a free flowing movement. In super coat with lovely harsh outer coat. Did not concentrating when on the move in the challenge, which was a shame. 2. Massey’s Schipperke, Ristine Tweedledee. Well proportioned head with nicely set ears. Correct neck. Stands four square on strongly boned legs and cat-like feet. Good topline and tailset. Nicely muscled and moved well. Good coat.
