The Birmingham and District Gundog and Terrier Club

Twin Group Open Show

19th October 2019

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS

JUDGE DAVE MCKIMM

Thank you to the club for inviting me to judge both sexes at this lovely well-run show and my gratitude to my ring stewards Karen and Jan who both did a top job of keeping everything running for me. I was extremely happy with my entry (on the day 27 making 28) and my thanks go to the exhibitors who brought some quality dogs for me to assess and the sporting way in which my decisions were accepted.  Some extremely tough decisions to make and only my opinion on the day.

A long day being first breed in the ring but worthwhile staying on to see my BOB achieve TG4 in a fantastic Group.

Puppy Dog 6 (0)

1st Gazstaff’s Black Magic (Thomas and Griffiths) 26.10.18 BPD

Bk/Br dog of almost 12 months and one of 2 from this litter I had the pleasure of judging today, and of great quality. Cracking clean head on this youngster with good dentition, well defined stop and correct length of muzzle, well placed dark eyes and clean enough around the lip. Doing well for rib at this stage and showing just enough tuck up, good width to front, sound front and rear quarters, correct angulation and very neat feet. Good topline stacked and on the move. Just pipped to BPIB by his litter sister that was more settled on her movement. Handled well and lovely to see the puppies enjoying their time in the ring

2nd Hamason Fynnbar Firecracker (Robinson and Marsh) 14.03.19

Eye catching Red dog with white front, legs and white markings on rear. Ample bone and good width to front. Head is developing nicely with just a touch more length to muzzle than my first place. Dark eyes and big white teeth with correct bite. Good shoulder placement and rear angulation and a level topline both stood and on the move.  Unfortunately giving nearly 5 months away on maturity to my first place that was days away from being junior, but he has plenty of time on his side. Handled and moved well.

3rd Hamason to be Frank at Karjaydan (Lewis) 14.03.19

Junior Dog 3 (0)

1st Elitebull Charger (Desmond) 23.09.18 RBD

Bk/Br Dog of 13 months with white patch on chest and noted to be a proper little live wire. Strong and clean head with dark eyes, clean lipped and correct bite. Nice tidy ears which he used to his advantage in class to show great expression and keen and alert throughout. Good width to front with short powerful neck leading into correct shoulders, good amount of bone and lovely neat feet. Well ribbed and powerful rear end which he used well on the move. Presented in excellent condition and handled to perfection, awarded Reserve Best Dog

2nd Waystaff Moonshine (Makin & Porter) 23.06.18

White dog of 16 months with red patch on head. Another nice youngster presented in excellent condition. Head just a little less strength than my first place but clean with a nice dark eye and correct length of muzzle, enough underjaw, clean lipped with big white teeth and correct bite. Well ribbed, correctly coupled and sound front and rear quarters.  Good topline when stood and on the move, handled and moved well

3rd  Holmane Moldavite (Gibson) 18.05.18 (see Post Graduate Dog)

Post Graduate Dog 2 (0)

1st  Manark Made to Measure (Gough)

Red dog with white front of almost 2 years. Well defined head with distinct stop, well placed dark eyes, dark mask, good skull to muzzle ratio, clean lipped with good underjaw and correct dentition. Ears are tidy enough and were used well in class when prompted to create a pleasing expression. Short strong neck leading into correct shoulders, good width to front and, well ribbed, correctly coupled and a good strong set of rear quarters, presented in good fit condition. Movement was ok once settled and held his topline. Made his handler work hard but saw enough to win his class.

2nd Holmane Moldavite (Gibson) 18.05.18

Smart dark brindle with white patches on chest and a lovely clean and typical head on this youngster. Dark well placed eyes, good underjaw, clean lipped and correct dentition. Enough bone and tidy feet. Front and rear angulations ok, moved ok once settled holding his topline.  Generally, on the leaner side and presented in good fit condition and a beautiful coat. I just preferred the width to front on my 1st place. I noted on speaking with the owners / handler he had a recent bad experience in the ring being assessed and was pleased to see that he responded very well to his assessment on this occasion and hope he continues to enjoy his time in the ring.

Open Dog 4 (0)

1st Tillcarr Fire Starter JW (Preston) 28.06.17 BD, BOB and went on to gain TG4

Well presented, very alert Black Brindle with white patches on front of almost 2 ½ years and notably of high quality. Balanced and showing good strength for size. Very masculine strong headed dog with dark, well placed eyes, clean lipped and well off for underjaw showing big clean white teeth with correct bite. Short strong neck flowing into powerful shoulders, good width to front and good depth of brisket, well off for rib and correctly coupled. Well defined powerful hindquarters allowing him to move with ease (sometimes significantly faster than his handler) on what was a difficult surface for most of the dogs today, holding his topline level when stacked and on the move. Very keen to please throughout the class taking everything in his stride, constantly watching and using his ears to great advantage creating a lovely expression. Very pleased to award Best Dog and Best of Breed and see him handled perfectly in group to take TG4. All the very best of luck with him and hope he goes on to achieve everything he deserves, thank you for bringing him.

2nd AUT CH/HR CH Black Jet Fighter (Lorenz) 17.09.15

Top size Bk/Br dog of just over 4 years with more lift than my first placed dog. Typical head with good stop, dark eye and correct skull to muzzle ratio though not quite as strong as my first place, with a little more flesh around his mouth which was housing nice big clean white teeth, ok for underjaw. Ears tidy and used well showing a very keen and alert expression when called for.  Correct shoulders and enough rib, correctly coupled. Rear angulation correct with enough bend of stifle. Moved holding his topline.

3rd Fergustaff Jack Frost ShCM (Marshallsay) 25.02.16

Puppy Bitch 8 (1)

1st Gazstaff’s Black Velvet at Skyestaff (Hands & Freeman) 26.10.18 BPB, BB, RBOB, BPIB

Bk/Br bitch with small white patch on chest, and white toes on one front leg of almost 12 months and litter sister to Puppy dog winner. For me a very eye-catching bitch of great quality on first look and wasn’t disappointed in the slightest when I got my hands on her. Just the prettiest strong but feminine and clean head and beautiful clean white teeth with good bite. Well placed dark, endearing eyes and nice neat ears which could do nothing but get my attention, every time I glanced across watching me.  Adequate bone for size and well balanced, trim build, ok for rib and correctly coupled with sound rear quarters. Perhaps not enough for some right now but for me everything packed into this bundle. She moved extremely well holding her topline, stacked she looked perfection, good front with enough width and straight as a die. No doubt the star of this class with fantastic ring presence and up on her toes throughout class, ready to spring into action at any second but at the same time knowing she had a job to do and playtime was later.  Bitch and handler obviously have a very tight relationship and put in the best performance of the day. No hesitation in awarding her BPIB, BB and after a close decision RBOB. I hope lots more to come from this one. All the very best of luck for the future and thank you for bringing her.

2nd Leebee’s Bubbalicious (Lee) 01.11.18

Red Bitch with white front and white socks of almost 12 months. Head not quite as strong as my first place, very clean and pleasing, undeniably feminine with dark eyes and tidy ears. Clean lipped with good underjaw and lovely white teeth with correct bite. Clean and straight front with enough bone, and sound front and rear quarters, tidy feet and presented in lovely fit condition. Overall a very attractive bitch that was very alert throughout the class and enjoying her time in the ring, a beautiful “pick me” expression but on this day, she was going to have a tough time matching the performance of my first place. Moved ok, handled well

3rd Dilirystaff Spirit of Love (Heron) 23.01.19

Junior Bitch 2 (1)

1st Shortyrocks Faith Trust and Pixiedust (IMP USA) (Waltham, Bryant & Carter) 25.08.18 RBB

Smart Red Bitch with white front and one white sock. Blessed today I was to have yet another pretty bitch in front of me Very pleasing feminine head, well defined stop, well placed dark enough eyes and tidy ears which she used to good advantage with a beautiful expression. Good cheek bumps, clean lipped and good underjaw and finished off with a nice dark muzzle housing correct dentition. Good width to front which was straight and clean, ok for bone, good shoulder placement with good amount of rib and correctly coupled with sound rear quarters and good bend of stifle. Presented in good condition Had a lovely topline which she held well on the move. Moved and handled well. Unfortunately stood alone in class but well worthy of her 1st place and pleased to also award her RBB

Post Graduate Bitch 5 (4)

1st Lonemoor Inion De for Zaagabull (Hoggard & Afsar) 24.05.17

Bk/Br Bitch with white patch on chest of over 2 years. Pleasing head with dark eyes, tidy ears, defined stop and correct length of muzzle, clean lipped and ok for underjaw with good dentition. Compact and on the finer side and in exceptionally fit condition, hard as nails fit would be a good summary. Good front and rear quarters with correct angulations. Well sprung ribs and correctly coupled, good tidy feet, moved well once settled, handled well.  Very keen and alert and used her ears well to create a pleasing expression. Another bitch that was a live wire in the ring, stood alone but worthy of her 1st place.
