Pontardulais Agricultural and Horticultural Society Open Show

26th August 2019

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIERS

JUDGE DAVE MCKIMM

Thank you to the Society for inviting me to judge at this well run and friendly show, and my gratitude to my Ring Steward Linda Jenkins who did a great job on keeping things running with a full day of Stewarding in the heat. Of course, the most thanks to go to the exhibitors who brought some quality dogs for me to assess on the day and the sporting way in which my decisions were accepted. Icing on the cake was to see my BOB achieve TG2 and my BPIB TPG1.

Thoroughly enjoyed my day and well done to the local SBT Exhibitors who seem to have turned the tide, as I was informed, to go from being at risk of losing the SBT classes, to having the largest Breed entry of the day within 3 years, showing that as a Breed we do favour our up and coming Breed Specialist Judges. I hope this continues as experience of hands on and numbers for our new Breed Judges is of such high importance, these shows are a great day out and good experience for the exhibits.

Puppy 7 (1) - a lovely class of puppies and a challenge to get my placings, very encouraging and another day who knows

1st Gazstaff’s Man In Black For Antoniostaff (Antonio) - BPIB and went on to achieve TPG1

Bk/Br dog of 10 months old, small white patch on chest. Good head with defined stop, well placed dark eyes, lovely neat ears, good dentition with large white teeth, ample underjaw. His body is developing well with clean lines, straight front of enough width and good bone, correct shoulder placement, enough rib for age and good front and rear quarters. His condition for me was perfect at this age, firm enough to indicate he is having the correct amount of work put in without overdoing things. Smooth and gleaming coat, very alert, watching everything unfold in class and using his ears to great advantage to give excellent expression. Maintained a good level topline when stood and on the move, handled well and moved well once settled.

2nd Jasamarch Celtic Queen (Lewis)

Bk/Br bitch of almost 7 ½ months, small white fleck on front. Undeniably feminine and a very pretty bitch. Again, a lovely well-defined head for her age with distinct stop, dark eye and very neat ears, big white teeth and good underjaw. Clean and straight front with good bone, front and rear quarters developing nicely. Unfortunately, in mixed classes and an age gap of nearly 3 months to the 1st place giving a lot away to the class winner. Beautiful expression when called for and moved well holding a good level topline. Presented in gleaming condition and well handled, she certainly has the promise of good things to come as she matures.

3rd Ginstean Epitome of Beauty (Whitley)

Junior 4 (1)

1st Maxta’s Sparkling Shoes for Ginstean (Whitley)

Bk/Br bitch of 15 months, small white patch on chest, 1 white foot. Very striking markings, strong head, good stop, dark eyes, neat ears, good dentition and good underjaw, front clean and straight with enough width, good depth of brisket. Well boned with good shoulder placement, good amount of rib, defined waist, correctly coupled and sound rear quarters which she used well on the move holding her topline level. Presented in lovely condition, overall a good mover and a very eye-catching bitch. A very close consideration for BOB / RBOB today in the final line up just flagging a little in the heat and didn’t make good use of her ears to get the keen expression I so dearly love to see. no matter how much I squeaked or threw that Teddy.

2nd  Annemstaffs Black Beauty (Harris)

Bk/Br bitch of 16 months with small white patch on chest. Well presented in gleaming coat and good, firm condition. Good dentition, head just a little less strength than my 1st place, with a slightly lighter eye, but overall just minor comparative points on placing correct front and shoulder placement, well boned with good amount of rib and sound front and rear quarters, very pleasing in profile. Owner / Handler has a lovely relationship with this bitch who is no doubt keen to please and a lovely expression when prompted. Moved and handled well holding a level topline

3rd Elitebull Hydra (Webster)

Graduate 3 (2)

1st  Staffordeyez Lone Soldier (Smith)

Bk/Br Dog approaching 4 years, white flash on front. Compact with good strength for size. Well defined head, good dentition and ample underjaw, prefer a little darker eye, neat ears Well bodied and presented in fit, gleaming condition. Strong neck flowing into well-placed shoulders and plenty of width to front with enough bone. Good front and rear quarters, correctly coupled, held a level topline on the move. Moved ok, handled well

Open 4 (2) - Tough class to place on the day with 2 top quality exhibits

1st Dazmarnic Know Wot I Mean JW ShCm (Jordan) - BOB and went on to gain TG2

Red dog of 3 ½ years, white patch on chest. Presented in hard condition. Strong, well defined head with well-developed cheek bumps, good dentition, clean lipped and good amount of underjaw dark enough eye for coat, neat ears, enough width to front and sound front and rear quarters. Plenty of rib and correctly coupled, took a bit of settling on the move but went well overall maintaining his topline.  He was keen and alert throughout the class and in the line-up using his ears to create great expression which was just enough to gain the advantage over 2nd place

2nd Ginstean Black Bomber (Whitley) - RBOB

Bk/Br dog of 6 ½ years with white patch on chest. Another well turned out dog that can still trouble the younger ones. Good head with defined stop with a little more length of muzzle to my 1st, good dentition, clean lipped with good underjaw, neat ears and dark eye, short powerful neck, clean straight front, plenty of rib and looked good in profile. Moved well holding a level topline and presented in great condition. On the day there was very little between these 2 dogs, 1st place just being that little keener on the day and had no hesitation in calling him back in for final consideration awarding him RBOB – well done and thank you for bringing him
