THE BASENJI CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN – 80TH ANNIVERSARY CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW – 13TH JULY 2019

I was very honoured and privileged to be invited to judge the Basenji Club of Great Britain’s 80th Anniversary Championship Show, and many thanks to the Committee and Members for the invitation. Many thanks also to the Basenji Club of Great Britain too, for the beautiful gift of a silver Basenji brooch. I shall treasure it and wear it with pride.   

As I am getting older and my knees aren’t as good as they should be, I decided some time ago that this is the last year I will accept judging appointments. I have now only accepted one show to judge prior to the end of 2019 and that is in Australia - the Queensland Basenji Club’s Championship Show on  21st September. I passed my first Group (Hound Group) in 1979 and this year is 2019 so I figured that as I am another 40 years of age, it is enough. I have been an All Breeds judge since 2008, and the dog world has been very kind to me over the years. So I think that judging two Basenji Specialties is a good time to retire. 

Many thanks to the exhibitors who showed their dogs, the good sportsmanship and the pleasant way you all accepted my decisions. It was a great honour to judge your dogs. I found the Basenjis were very mixed and in some classes, it was slightly difficult to find the winner. I was very pleased to see that temperament on all the exhibits was lovely, and that is a credit to the breeders and owners. I wish you all the best with your Basenjis in the future. 

1st (9) Davis & Sandford’s MEMETUKA HOT ‘N’ SPICY - A R/W puppy with lovely breed type. Very pleasing head with good wrinkle, level back and well set tail. Naughty on the move but when he settled he moved well. RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW. 

2nd (35) Hardy & Hallam’s TOKAJI NASHVILLE REBEL - Good type with good r/w coat and colour. Good head but longer in muzzle than the winner. Moved well.

3rd (43) Legget’s SWANWITE TAKE A CHANCE ON ME.

1st (29) Gaskell’s MEMTUKA MAD ABOUT THE BOY - Very good breed type. Lovely head, with good wrinkle. Good ears. Good body and coat and moves well. 

2nd (33) Hardy & Hallam’s TOKAJI WALKING IN MEMPHIS - Tri dog. His head could have more wrinkle and smaller eyes. Good body and tail.

2nd (5) Casentieri’s ADEBANKE’S KING KOLE (IMP RUS) - Head a bit wide and lacking in wrinkle. Good body and tail. Moved quite well. 

POST GRADUATE DOG - 3 entries (0 Abs) 

2nd (50) Matthew’s FLUGELBERRY FREE CUBA - Brindle dog with a pleasant head which could have more wrinkle. Nice small ears. Good hindquarters. Tail could be a bit tighter.

1st (42) Knowles TOKAJI KLASSIC TRICKSTER AT SARAWANA - Lovely tri dog with a classic head. Good length of neck flowing into good shoulders. Good legs and feet. Level topline and well angulated hindquarters. Lovely tail set and curl, and good shelf behind. Moves very well. DOG CC & BEST IN SHOW

2nd (41) Kalnina’s FREDERICK FANTASTIC DESTINY - Good r/w coat. Slightly longer in body than first dog. Good hindquarters.

1st (22) Frost’s AM CH/CAN CH BUSHWACKER FORTUNE HUNTER (IMP CAN) - Very good type r/w dog. Good head with good wrinkle and good ears. Good hindquarters and tail. Moves well.

2nd (80) Young’s VESTOID ROMULUS - R/W dog slighter longer than first dog. Head slightly wider than I would prefer. Good wrinkle. Good hindquarters. Tail could be higher set.

1st (56) Nicholls CH NGANGA’S IT’S ONE HECK OF A STORM (IMP SWE) - Good r/w dog with a pleasing head and good length of neck. Straight back, good hindquarters with a good shelf. Good feet. Moved well. RESERVE DOG CC

2nd (8) Clinton’s CH WESTLAWN DIABLO ShCM - Tri dog with good head but the eyes could be a bit darker. Level topline and good hindquarters and good feet. Tail could be slightly higher set. 

3rd Grayson and Rowland’s CH EMBEAU SUN SEEKER.

2nd (77) Wright & Wilkinson’s CH FARAOLAND YULETIDE SNOWFALL AT ELSCO -8 year old boy slightly heavier than the first. In good condition with a good head. Tail could be tighter. Good shelf behind. Moves well.

2nd (48) Matthews FLUGELBERRY CHERIE TRIFLE - Brindle with a very good head and dark almond eyes. Good body with level topline and good hindquarters. Tail could be a bit tighter.

2nd (63) Richardson & Wood’s WOODELLA PURPLE HAZE OVER COOPERLAND ShCM - Tri with a very nice head. Body a bit longer than 1st. Tail set a bit low. Good hindquarters.

2nd (15) Dunsdon’s CH/AUS CH ZANDEENA GETN CORT IN THE ACT (IMP AUS) - Very pleasant r/w bitch. Not as much winkles as the 1st bitch, and her eyes are lighter. Good body, hindquarters and tail. Moved well.
