Crufts

Breed: Siberian Husky

SIBERIAN HUSKIES

CRUFTS 2019

What a wonderful experience this was! Many thanks to everyone who brought their dogs for me to judge, it was a fabulous entry and a great honour. In some classes there were some very nice dogs who had to go unplaced or did not even make the shortlist. A number of dogs who looked good on the stand let themselves down on the move, in a lot of cases when they were coming towards me; I naturally had to take this into account.

As always, I was looking for athletic working dogs I would be happy to have on my team, but as I have said previously Siberians are not clones of each other and when judging it is possible to place dogs of slightly different types that still fit the standard and possess the attributes required to be a working sled dog.

As should be the case at Crufts, I really was spoilt for choice for green card winners, with some close decisions and a good number of dogs in both sexes who were worthy of winning CCs.

Due to being given a set time for completion of judging I had to be aware of this and was therefore unable to move the dogs round together at the start of each class.

Presentation was good and I was pleased that the majority of dogs present were in fit, or reasonably fit condition. A large percentage of the entry were in firm muscular condition and none significantly over or under weight.

VETERAN DOG (9)

1st CH ICEBEX THE FIRST AVENGER JW (MISS R CUNNINGHAM)

Grey/white. Tall masculine boy with super head and expression, almond shaped obliquely set eyes and correct high earset. Stands with well-arched neck, good shoulders, feet and pasterns, correct topline and well angulated hindquarters, well muscled, lovely coat, strides round the ring like he owns it, BV.

2nd CH FLINT AV VARGEVASS FOR CHATANIKA (IMP NOR) (MR P & MRS L ROBERTSON)

Grey/white. Pleasing expression with almond-shaped obliquely set eyes, balanced outline with good angulation front and rear, good feet and pasterns, good topline with correct slope to croup. Beautifully constructed but not quite matching the winner on movement today.

3rd RYKALOV'S SPARKS AT WIGHTFLIGHT (MS J D PLATT)

Dark grey/white. Athletic boy with good angulation, correct topline and slope to croup giving good tail carriage. Good expression with almond shaped eyes, well muscled, moved with a good stride.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (3)

1st TRAILHUNTERS TSUTEY (MISS N V & MISS R MARCH & SMITH)

Grey/white, 8 months. Lovely head and expression with high set ears and almond shaped eyes. Nicely arched neck, good shoulders, correct slope to croup and tail carriage, in good coat, moved with a good stride, front movement slightly loose, will tighten with maturity, showing great promise, BPD.

2nd TRAILHUNTERS EYTUKAN (MISS N V & MISS R MARCH & SMITH)

Grey/white, litter brother to the winner and similar comments apply. At this stage his overall balance did not quite match his brother’s and he has a slightly tighter tail but still a very nice puppy and it will be interesting to see how these two compare as they mature.

3rd GERCEKASK ATOMIC BOMB (MRS S & MISS K STEADMAN & WATERFIELD)

Grey/white. Stronger in head than the first two but with good earset and almond shaped eyes. Balanced in outline, level topline, good tail carriage, tidy on the move, would prefer slightly more length of leg.

PUPPY DOG (6)

1st TRAILHUNTERS TSUTEY (MISS N V & MISS R MARCH & SMITH)

2nd TRAILHUNTERS EYTUKAN (MISS N V & MISS R MARCH & SMITH)

3rd SHAYTAAN'S WINTER SOLDIER AT CEANNABEINNE (IMP CAN) (MR H H & MRS J M WAKKER)

White, 11 months, good head and earset, super outline and balance, an athletic looking youngster who was tidy on the move, correct topline and tail carriage, excellent front angulation, good feet. I am sure he will have a good future in the ring and on the trail.

JUNIOR DOG (13)

1st AZGARD NIMBUS (MR G & MRS S FLETCHER)

Grey/white. Athletic, super front, feet and pasterns, excellent outline and balance, correct topline, arched loin, sloping croup, lean and well muscled, moved with a lovely stride, one I would like to steal for my team.

2nd ARCTICTREKS SPOOK'S TRICK AT TARGATRAIL (MRS J S, MR L J & MISS V L NICHOLLS)

Sable/white. Good expression, ears set high, good shoulders and front, correct feet and pasterns, good topline, arched loin, moved with a good stride.

3rd SNOQUALMIE CAPTAIN MORGAN AT ARCTICSWIRL (MRS E A SMITH)

Grey/white. Good earset and expression, well-balanced outline, nice depth of chest, arch over loin and sloping croup, good tail carriage. Well-muscled, held his topline on the move.

YEARLING DOG (7)

1st CHATANIKA'S DRAGONKIN (MR P & MRS L ROBERTSON)

Black/white. Expressive head, almond shaped eyes although a little narrow in muzzle, had a tendency to stand with his topline sloping to the rear but this improved on the move, good tail carriage. Still has some maturing to do.

2nd SIBERIADRIFT WOLF MOON (MRS RANBY)

Grey/white. A little plain in head with ears quite wide set and wearing no clothes, but moved well enough to win his place, striding out well with level topline and good tail carriage.

3rd SALAZKA'S MR ABERNATHY (MRS H S SNELSON)

Black/white. Lovely high set ears and good shape to head, good topline and tailset, angulation OK, movement somewhat erratic on the day, still maturing.

POST GRADUATE DOG (17)

1st SULACO HUDSON (MRS V AGUILERA)

Black/white. Medium sized athletic boy, jet black glossy coat, super head with correct earset and almond shaped eyes, beautiful balance and angulation, good feet and pasterns. Correct topline with arch over loin, sloping croup, correct tail carriage. When settled he moved with a lovely easy stride and was absolutely true on the out and back. Sadly in the challenge he became distracted and did not move his best, but certainly should achieve his title in the future.

2nd FROSTYNIGHTS BLOODRAVEN (MR I R ROBINSON)

Dilute black/white. Fabulous head and expression with high set ears, almond-shaped obliquely set eyes, excellent front, shoulders, feet and pasterns, level topline with correct arch over loin and sloping croup, ideal tail carriage. Well muscled and in lovely coat. One of the best here today, would like to see him moving slightly faster in order to show off his stride, certainly will be a contender for top awards.

3rd JANSKCOO'S FORTITUDE JW (MISS J COOPER)

Grey/white. Good expression and earset, super shoulders, good feet and pasterns, well balanced, correct arch over loin and sloping croup, good tailset, in great coat and condition, moved beautifully with an easy stride in profile and correct on the out and back. Free moving, pleasing in profile and the out and back.

3rd SNOQUALMIE SOLAR TSWIFT AT TSARITSA (MR & MRS BIDDLECOMBE)

Grey/white. Mischievous expression. Carries quite a big coat that makes him look slightly heavier than he actually is, especially around the neck and shoulders, need to have hands on this boy in order to appreciate his construction. Well balanced, good shoulders, correct topline, croup and tail carriage, moved out very well.

OPEN DOG (13, 1)

1st CH KORSVIG'S COOPER AT TSARITSA (MR & MRS BIDDLECOMBE)

Super outline and balance, arched neck, excellent front assembly, correct feet and pasterns, ideal depth of chest, level topline held on the move with slight arch over the loin and correctly sloping croup, good bend of stifle and correct tail carriage. A real athlete giving the impression of (as described in the standard) a balance of power, speed and endurance.
