Spanish Water Dog

Judge: Mr R Blomme (Belgium)

My thanks to the City of Birmingham committee for their hospitality and for having invited me to judge on this special 75th anniversary show. Many thanks to my ring stewards. But mostly so many thanks to you, the exhibitors, for having entered your dogs which I really have very much appreciated. Thank you. I was very pleased with this nice entry and honored to be able to judge this breed with CC’s. The Spanish Water dog breed surely is one of my favorites and I really do like this breed.

I had no other expectations than finding an excellent quality of dogs, which indeed I did. Hard work has been done over the years to get this breed on a high quality level in the UK. Well done and keep going !

This is a breed in which a wide variety of types can be found and often has to do with proportions. I was pleased with the proportions of the dogs in general what concerns body lengths, but a few in my opinion were rather short on the legs, which is not new in the breed. Also hind movement is often rather narrow, but on the other hand wide and broad fronts were very much the exception.

Compared to other countries where I judged SWD I can say you have a very good quality and the comments I made about shorter legs and being narrow behind on the move do also apply to other countries. It seems to be part of the breed but needs attention.

In general I liked the rustic look of the dogs, with good wooly texture. A few however had recently had their annual clip and were presented in a too short coat.

Some classes had very hard decisions to be made, which only means that the quality of the dogs was excellent.

But what worried me, and to my surprise, was to see that some aesthetic trimming has crossed the channel. Although not always evident it was there, but I however prefer the rustic natural looking coat. I do understand that in some areas of the dog this may be necessary to do for hygienic reasons but I hope not to come to a sculpted dog as in some countries where this aesthetic trimming has far too often become the standard, and I really do hope this will not happen in the UK.

To end in a happy note I was very much pleased to some young to very young handlers appearing in the ring and doing an extremely good job. Their attitude and behavior towards dogs and judges was perfect. Well done girls !

Lovely dog. Excellent type with nice proportions, however must not be lower on legs. He has a nice masculine head with good proportions and good eye. Excellent body and bone. Nice level topline and good croup. Loved his nice rustic coat of correct structure. He moved well with breed typical gait, although a little close behind. I found him an excellent example of the breed and was pleased to award him the dog res CC.

Nice 7 month old baby of lovely type. Loved his compact body with good proportions and on legs of good length and proportions to body. Must improve in ribs. Nice masculine head, good stop and eye. He has for his age already an excellent rustic coat of correct structure. At this stage would rather say sufficient in angulations. Although moving well with typical breed gait and tail would have preferred to see a little more temperament. A little narrow behind.

2nd: 7037 SHUTT, Mrs W & Mr P & SHUTT Ms A Mourama Cordoba

Very happy puppy. Good type but found him a little long in proportions. Should grow a little more in legs too. Masculine head although needs a little more in muzzle. He has for his age already excellent ribs. Nice level topline but found at the end the croup a little rounded. Liked his front angulations but needs to improve just a little in hindquarters. Moving well for age. In nice rustic puppy coat although it may take just that little longer, but plenty of time.

A very nice dog of good type. Very rustic in appearance. Prefer just a little more length of legs. Very nice masculine head with excellent expression and good bite. He has an excellent matured body for age but just found him a little wide in the front. Very good in bone, feet and angulations. A little rounded croup. Excellent rustic coat of good structure. Breed typical gait seen from the side, but a little wide in front and a little narrow behind. A very good rustic representative of the breed. Best junior.

Nice type in very excellent proportions. Good length of legs. Of good substance and very well matured for age. Lovely strong masculine head with good proportions. Good eye. Prefer his bite to be a little more regular. Excellent body and angulations. Would prefer his topline a little stronger and croup a little less steep. Breed typical gait but a little close behind. Presented in rustic coat of good structure.

2nd: 7028 LADLOW Mr L & Mrs L Josalyn Roldan El Mago

A dog of good type. Compact in body but must not be higher on the leg. Masculine head, perhaps a little long, with good eye. He needs a little time to mature. Would prefer his topline more level, tends to be overbuilt. Like to see some more in hindquarters and moving rather close behind.

Eye-catching dog. Lovely dog, excellent type and proportions. Perhaps just needs that little more on the leg. Rustic dog but found him a little styled. Very nice masculine head, eye and ear. Excellent body and angulations. Nice topline and croup. Excellent woolly coat structure. Very typical breed gait, with good drive and excellent temperament, only a little close behind.

2nd: 7006 ARMSTRONG, Miss J N & EGGINTON Mr B Valentisimo's Gran Pinnto

A taller boy but of good but different type, good proportions and looking very compact. A little higher on the leg than first. He looks very well balanced. Very nice excellent masculine head and proportions with nice expression. Excellent in body. Good angulations, nice topline and croup. He is strong on the move from side and going and coming with alert temperament. He has a rustic coat but prefer a less spotty and flecked colour.

A very nice dog. This one is really looking very rustic and “ready to work” type as well, although with a little coat styling. Masculine head and expression and very masculine overall. Excellent proportions and on good legs. Lovely strong and well made body with strong and level topline ending in a correct croup. Nice angulations. He is very strong on the move when seen from the side with good breed type gait, just would prefer him a little better behind. He has a rustic wooly coat but and very general rustic appearance. He became my best dog CC winner.

2nd: 7038 SPENCER Mr & Mrs N & J M Valentisimo's Vasco Balboa

Another lovely dog of excellent quality although different type to winner. He is a very nice dog too, well made and strong bodied with excellent angulations. Very nice masculine head with good proportions, good expression. He is on good length of legs, perhaps just a little long in body. Strong level topline, just a little round at croup. Very nice coat of excellent structure which I very much would like to see to grow longer to give a little extra rustic look. I liked his temperament on the move. Breed typical gait but a little narrow behind. Very close to winner for 1st in this class.

Excellent angulations and a nice strong level topline with correct croup. She was very alert on the move showing a very much breed typical gait. Loved her already nice rustic coat. An already taller grown girl but of excellent type and good proportions. Nice feminine head and expression. She has nice angulations. At this moment, which for sure is a growing stage, she has her topline a little up towards the back. She moved with a nice breed gait and excellent temperament. She is a little close behind and a little loose in front. Already a very nice coat structure giving a lovely rustic appearance.

A lovely type and shape. Nice proportions and on good length of legs. She has an excellent feminine head with correct proportions and expression. She is excellent in body with correct strong and level topline and croup. Nice angulations although in my opinion she could be a little more moderate behind. I loved her attitude and temperament on the move. Excellent breed typical gait, moving well going and coming. Nice wooly coat of good structure. She was my bitch Res CC.

2nd: 7020 GLAYSHER , Mr & Mrs S C & DONALDSON Mrs F Prizelands Sweet Truffle

Another very lovely one of correct type and shape, although well sized. Nice feminine head and expression. She has a good developed body but carries a little too much weight today. Excellent topline, a little steep in croup. Would prefer front and rear a little more in angulations. She has an excellent temperament on the move, breed typical but could be a little more regular. Coat sufficient wooly, nice rustic appearance.
