As I was the first UK judge to award CCs to this breed and have judged them at this level more than anyone I feel qualified to pass some comments on the breed today.
The two main things to remember when judging Havanese are length, the length of the nose to stop should be equal to the length of stop to occiput, a short muzzle is not correct although it might look sweet. That is not the expression required.
It is not a square dog, it is slightly longer in back than height, the length comes from the ribcage not the loin which must be short and strong.
Havanese have a very typical movement in front it is short and springy, due to the short upper arm and drive from behind there is no long reach which is a fault which seems to have crept in, it might look good on a Shih Tzu but not is not correct on Havanese.
Class 157 VD (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 556 GROCOCK Mr P Aust Carnwath Coolangatta Gold For Havalag (Imp)
Nearly 9 years old and has lost interest in showing but his owner still enjoys his day out. The standard says slightly longer than tall but this boy is not balanced as he is too long in body and his coat has become fluffy rather than wavy.

1st: 544 BETTISON Miss R Minniebell Nahla's Dream
Extremely well balanced head, with broad skull, flat cheeks and dark almond eyes giving that typical friendly expression. Good balanced body shape, level back with slight rise over well muscled loin, short upper arm giving correct free springy step. High tail set, good coat of silky soft texture. Res BCC
2nd: 567 MCCALLUM-SEALY Miss H Pandaprint's Anastasia JW
I liked this bitch when a puppy, today just let herself down on front movement, rather choppy instead of free. She has the correct shoulder placement and short upper arm with front under body so assume this was just a fault on the day. Balanced head, good expression, good ribs, high tailset, very promising.

So well named as she is lovely in every angle, balanced solid body, good ribs, level back strong loin, enough angulation behind to give the drive that goes with the free springy movement in front. Correct shape of head with equal from nose to stop and stop to occiput, enough breadth of skull, moderate stop and dark almond eyes with lovely expression. Very good pigmentation. Coat of correct silky soft texture with enough wave and correct length. BCC
2nd: 569 MILES Mrs L Adorele A Perfect World
Another in good coat of correct length so that there is some daylight, silky, soft with enough undercoat. Good mover with correct free springy step and drive from behind. Firm body with good ribs.
