Paignton & District Fanciers' Association

Breed: Papillon

Thank you very much to Paignton for inviting me to judge at this very well-run show. Thank you also to the exhibitors for entering under me and giving me the chance to judge their dogs and for the sporting way in which they took my choices. I am not going to pretend and say that I believe that the breed is in a good way, as I believe it isn’t. I must admit I came away from this appointment very disheartened at the quality. I believe that even though the Papillon is a toy dog it still should be able to move, and that to me to paramount and I was incredibly disappointed in movement throughout the whole entry today. Too many that high step or don’t reach in front or very restricted in profile. However, we don’t want to lose the elegance & grace of a Papillon and sometimes it really was a matter of compromise, as at times I struggled to find a dog with both.

That said I was happy with my two main winners who I felt were typical and sound examples of the breed and looked a picture going around together at the end.

Class 1685 MPD (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4774 MORRELL Mrs S Temelora Andi Get Your Gun smart R/S/W puppy of 7 months old. Lovely size and shape and presents a lovely well balanced outline. Really sweet head of the correct proportions with a lovely dark eye and gentle expression. Well placed ears, which are large, mobile and well fringed for his age. Good length of neck leading into a well laid shoulder. Well angulated front. Very well bodied with a good spring of rib. Well angulated behind. Topline held well standing and on the move. Good straight legs, which are finely boned. Good tail set carried correctly over his back with a nice plume coming. In lovely coat and condition. Moved out well with confidence, just needs to tighten slightly in front.

2nd: 4763 LEE-SLATER, Mrs C & KEWLEY Mrs C Graycaz O'Theo just 6 months and another nice puppy that presents a very typical outline when standing with firm level topline and perfect tail set. Masculine head, however, I preferred the head shape and expression of 1. Well placed ears, with some excellent fringing coming for his age. Good front angulation. Finely boned straight legs with correct hare feet. Well bodied for one so young, with a good depth of chest and spring of rib. Moved out steadily with a good profile action, just another that needs to firm up in front.

3rd: 4739 ATKINS Mr M & Mrs A Ablazzor Fire Storm for Vlinder

Class 1687 JD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4771 MORRELL Mrs S Tricianbri Harry Beau For Temelora lovely sized dark r/s/w who really took my attention. Super shape when standing with the correct ‘jug handle’ tail, ideally could have a fraction more length of leg. Masculine head but not too strong, lovely kind dark eye giving a super expression. Very large, mobile ears with good rounded tips that he used to advantage. Very nice to go over, with everything in the correct place. Good straight legs, with great harefeet. Well bodied with a good depth. Lovely level topine. Well angulated hindquarters. Moves out ever so well, with excellent power and drive, free flowing and so sound. Very much in my mind for top honours today. I am sure he will have a bright future.

2nd: 4742 BROWN Mrs L Zoloto Lucky Winner Exhilaro tri dog who is a completely different type to my winner. Completely fine and dainty throughout but just lacks slightly in masculinity for me. Finely pointed muzzle with a well-defined stop. Intelligent expression. Alert well set ears that could be slightly bigger. Good length of neck, with a decent front. Enough body throughout for his age, but for me I would like a fraction more, but this will hopefully come as he matures. Good turn of stifle. Presented in lovely coat and condition with a fine and silky texture. Moved out very soundly and very daintily.

3rd: 4795 WALKLETT Mrs & Miss J A & L A Angullyon's Echo

Class 1688 YD (6 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4764 LEE-SLATER, Mrs C & KEWLEY Mrs C Magic Sunrise Ace Ventura (Imp) glamourous & elegant red sable dog presented in excellent coat and condition. Lovely profile when standing, with good length to leg. Masculine head of the correct proportions with a lovely dark eye giving a nice expression. Huge ears with correctly rounded tips and fabulous fringing for his age. He is lovely to go over, with a good length of neck leading into well placed shoulders. Finely boned, straight legs and correct hare feet. Ample depth to chest and well sprung ribs set back into a short a loin. Firm, level topline, with a perfectly set long tail, arching well over his back with good plume. He presents a lovely profile action, he still needs to settle slightly on the up and back, but he is only young and has plenty of time. I have no doubt he has an assured future.

2nd: 4790 THOMPSON, Mrs J & AUSTIN Mrs S Melangel Highland By Design At Jhanakia B/W dog that really has come on in recent months. Standing he presents a lovely outline, with a level topline and correctly set ‘jug handle’ tail with a great plume. Lovely head, with good stop, finely pointed muzzle and a cheeky expression from dark, rounded eyes. Large, mobile ears with enough fringing. Good to go over on the table with a well angulated front and rear and well bodied throughout. Moved with purpose, covering the ground well and sound enough both ways. Just for me, lacked the overall elegance and glamour of my winner.

3rd: 4775 OLOF Ms D Tarnock Romeo Romeo

Class 1689 PGD (7 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4789 STANBURY Mrs S Inixia Ever Ready Eddie Sh.CM 2 year old, R/S/W boy who I have always admired. Pleasing size and well-balanced, typical shape. Nicest of heads which was well marked with a well-defined stop and finely pointed muzzle. Large, well placed ears that could do with more fringing, but are alert at all times. Nicely bodied with excellent angles both fore and aft. Good finely boned legs with hare feet. Level topline and well set on tail and lovely plume. Shown in good coat and condition. As expected from this kennel, he moved around the ring with style, covering the ground and ever so sound. He is so full of fun and clearly loves his time in the ring. He still needs to fully mature up but once he has, I am sure he will challenge the best.

2nd: 4788 STANBURY, Mrs S & UNWIN Miss M Inixia Dressed To Kill B/W, litter brother to by winner and so similar in many aspects. Very much alike in head to his brother with similar expression and well set ears that could also benefit from more fringing. Very good to go over with good body and substance. Level topline and correct high set tail arched well over his back. Moved soundly both fore and aft, just a little more restricted in profile than his brother, nevertheless a lovely dog.

3rd: 4784 SLATER Mrs L Baillion Black Obsidian

Class 1690 LD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4741 BOUGHTON Mrs A & STANBURY Mrs S Inixia Follower Of Fashion superb, honest B/W dog of nearly 3 and now completely in his prime. Excellent for size and so well balanced with good length of leg. On the table he really is a pleasure to go over. Masculine head of the correct proportions and finely pointed muzzle, gorgeous expressive dark eyes, so full of character. Large, rounded, well placed ears with enough fringing that he really uses to advantage. Super length of neck, leading into well placed shoulders. Great depth of chest, with elbows set close. Forelegs straight with correct hare feet. Well sprung ribs set back into a nice short, strong loin. He holds a level topline at all times with a wonderfully high set tail arched well over his back with a good plume. On the move is where he really does impress, striding out with such a free-flowing action, with plenty of reach from the front and drive from the rear. He is super sound both fore and aft and looks a picture in profile, gracefully moving around the ring with his head held proud. He was presented in excellent order, with a lovely silky coat. His character and showmanship really shone through and today was his day! I awarded his father this RCC last time I judged, and I was delighted to be able to award this boy the DCC, his 3rd and BOB. A well-deserved Champion. Thrilled to see him shortlisted in a lovely Toy Group, he represented the breed perfectly. Congratulations!

2nd: 4768 WIGGINS Mrs J Rozamie Monsieur Arthur for Scapafield JW dark red/sable dog of correct balance and outline. Lovely head of good balance and dark eye, giving a typical expression. Huge, rounded, well fringed ears that are used to advantage. Good reach of neck and well laid shoulders. Finely boned legs and correct hare feet. Well bodied and good substance with well sprung ribs. Level topline and well set on tail, arched nicely over his back with good plume. Moved out sound enough back and forth and with a decent profile action, however I preferred the front action of my winner.

3rd: 4758 JURY Mr & Mrs W & L Melangel Zachary At Lindanwaye

Class 1691 OD (7 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 4766 LEE-SLATER Mrs C G Rozamie Monsieur Philippe, fine and dainty, fully matured tri dog presented in superb coat and condition. Excellent for size and shape with a typical outline. Handsome head, with a well-defined stop and finely pointed muzzle. Dark, rounded eyes giving a lovely expression. Large, mobile ears, alert at all times. Good length of neck, with a well angulated front, straight finely boned legs with correct hare feet. Great depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Good turn of stifle with well-muscled hind quarters. Long, high set tail, carried well over his back with a good plume. Strong topline held well at all times. On the move he is dainty and elegant but for me he lacked the reach in front of my DCC winner and also that extra sparkle my DCC winner had on the day so unfortunately had to settle today for the RCC but I am sure his day will come.

2nd: 4791 THOMPSON, Mrs J & AUSTIN Mrs S Melangel Highland Vogue At Jhanakia, a 5 year old R/W dog that doesn’t stand out on initial inspection but it is when you go over him you really appreciate his qualities. Super, typical outline when standing with a high set tail, arched well over his back. Masculine head with good proportions, I just preferred the head of my winner. Large, mobile ears used well with enough fringing. So well bodied, with a good depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Nicely angulated hindquarters. Very sound on the move with being true both fore and aft, without any restriction. Presented and handled well, just lacked the coat of my winner.

3rd: 4760 LANGDON Miss S C Skyvana Van Helsing

Class 1692 VD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4792 THOMPSON, Mrs J & AUSTIN Mrs S Jhanakia Highland Destiny 12 year old R/W dog whom I have judged before and awarded Best Veteran to then, my opinion has not changed on him and I still think he is a lovely example of the breed. Yes, now showing his age but he still presents a lovely outline when standing. Lovely head with clear sparkling eyes, so eager to please his mum. He still has a wonderful body on him and presented in 1st class order with ample amount of coat. He moved out so well with no restriction and so sound both coming and going. He really is a dog to be proud of and I was delighted again to award him Best Veteran in Breed over a very nice bitch.

2nd: 4753 HAMBLIN Mrs J Judaham Lawlace Legend handsome chap of a good shape and outline, just carries a huge wealth of coat that makes him appear quite heavy and stuffy. Handsome head with a lovely gentle expression. Well made with a good body and substance throughout. Moved very soundly both ways.

Class 1693 SBD (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4758 JURY Mr & Mrs W & L Melangel Zachary At Lindanwaye, I absolutely love the head on this very pretty R/S/W boy. Beautiful expression given from lovely rounded, dark eyes. Slightly rounded skull, between large, fabulously fringed ears, that he uses well. Lovely size and shape, with great body and substance. Moved out well, with good ground covering action and sound both ways. Just a little lazy with his tail, which is slightly low set and unfortunately held him back today. Beautifully presented. Best Special Beginners in Breed and delighted to see he went on to win Group 3 in the Special Beginners Group – Very well done!

2nd: 4784 SLATER Mrs L Baillion Black Obsidian well coated B/W dog in immaculate condition. Good balanced outline. I preferred the head shape and type of 1. Well placed ears, with some good fringing. Good front angulation. Finely boned straight legs with correct hare feet. Well bodied, with a good depth of chest and spring of rib. Good turn of stifle. Correctly set tail, carried well over his back. Moved out freely and lightly, just would prefer him neater behind.

3rd: 4742 BROWN Mrs L Zoloto Lucky Winner Exhilaro

Class 1694 SBB (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4803 WILLIAMS Mrs S J Melangel Exquisit Emmaline Mit Johnasta, well-made 18 month R/S/W with good length of leg. Well shaped head of the correct proportions but her eyes are slightly too light which detracts from her expression. Ears set well and used to advantage. Well bodied, in fact a little too much. Good depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Moved out soundly fore and aft.

2nd: 4759 KEATE Ms A L Inixia Cilla, very sweet, petite B/W bitch with a feminine head and cheeky expression. Well made with good body and substance and correct angles fore and aft. She moved out very well for her owner, willing to please at all times. For me I would just prefer a little more of her all over but I am sure you will have lots of fun with her.

Class 1695 MPB (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 4761 LANGDON Miss S C Northlyte Peaches And Cream Of Skyvana, very promising R/W bitch who knows exactly what to do already. Lovely balanced outline and a correctly textured coat coming in nicely. Gorgeous, sweet head of the correct proportions with a beautiful expression and symmetrical head markings. Large, mobile ears, used well throughout the class. She has a lovely shape to her, good length of neck laid into a a well angulated front. In good body and condition. Good turn of stifle. Tail set on correctly and nicely arched over her back. Correct, finely boned legs and hare feet. Topline held strong at all times. Could be a little mischievous at times on the move, but once she got going, she showed real promise and was very sound. I expect she will have a very bright future once she fully matures.

2nd: 4779 ORCHARD Miss S Panspayon Isla another puppy that showed real promise. Lovely size and typical outline when standing with good high set tail, arched well over her back. Finely boned legs and correct hare feet. Pretty head with sweet expression, finely pointed muzzle. Well set ears, used to advantage with good fringing coming. Good turn of stifle and well angulated hindquarters. Finely boned, straight legs and good hare feet. Well set tail, arching well over her back with a good plume coming. Lovely textured coat. A bit of a madam on the move at times, but once she settled, she showed a lovely light action and sound both ways. Delighted to award BPIB and she was in my mind for higher honours.

2nd: 4770 MATTHEWS Mrs A J Berestead Haute Couture another super puppy who oozes quality. Lovely R/W coat of a super texture. When standing she presents a decent outline but could benefit from a fraction more leg to complete the picture. Absolutely gorgeous head and expression, with a nice clear blaze. Well defined stop. Correct bite. Super ears set well, with a great amount of fringing already, used to advantage. Super neck and front angulation. Great body and substance for her age. Well angulated hindquarters.
