Crufts 2019 – Judge: Mr Kevin Davis (MyStyle) - Bulldogs
I had a wonderful time judging Crufts – the appointment of a lifetime, and I was so proud to have my family and close friends there at ringside.
Thanks to all those that showed under me, giving me the biggest entry in the Utility group, an also to those that didn't, but still showed their respect by turning up to watch.
As usual,I judged the dogs on the day with an open mind, with a view that you can't please everyone, so make sure you please yourself !
With so much adverse publicity on our breed, judging Bulldogs at Crufts now comes with a massive responsibility, and I was very conscious of finding a dog that would not only pass the health check, but represent the breed well in the group. I was looking for a dog in top condition, that not only met the breed standard, but could move correctly at the right pace with confidence and personality and that looked in total harmony with it's handler. I found just that in Ch Ricatori Redesigned.
I was a little disappointed with the overall quality, although very happy with my line ups Many exhibits still having tight tails and wry jaws were plentiful. In one particular class I had to check every single mouth again to recall the true jaws yet from ringside this could have looked the best class of the day ! I can tolerate slight wryness but some were very wry. I set high standards on my own show dogs so cant award top honours to dogs carrying these faults. Toplines need to improve as well, with far too many level or dippy backed on show. On the plus side, eyes, movement and temperament are a lot sounder with only a couple of suspect dogs.
As I expected my BOB flew through the health check and I made the effort to go to the big ring to watch in the hope that just maybe the bulldog might get a look, but was very disappointed when considering he came from the biggest entry in the group and was put through by an experienced breed specialist that he never even made the short list! He showed his socks off to such an extent that a well known all rounder sitting beside us even commented on how well he moved. These other breed winners must be really of exceptional quality! A special thank you to my two ring stewards who were a pleasure to work with and helped me get through all those dogs in good time and to the Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko for finding the time to come and share a few kind words. A lovely touch that meant a lot.

1st Eaton's Ch Ricatori Redesigned
White/Red Before judging, I had a vision of a dog that I would love to put forward to
represent our breed in the group. I was conscious of what was expected of a bulldog that
could compete with the other breeds, a dog that not only resembled our breed standard but
one that was in complete harmony with its owner. A dog in perfect condition, with a
temperament that could handle the big ring, and in this dog I found just that.
Standard size with no exaggeration. This dog typifies the breed. Very impressive, well

Limit Bitch (10, 0)
1st Nealings' Neptunebull Connie Rose (Bitch CC)
Red/white. Lovely bitch and one for the specialist, typifying the breed standard in many
ways, and we are so lucky to have a bitch like this being campaigned in the ring for
newcomers to look at and appreciate the important characteristics of the bulldog. I honestly
didnt make the decision to award this bitch CC until I had my winners stood in profile in the
Challenge. I purposely kept a good distance from the dogs to assess the balance and curves
of each dog. Although I was very happy with my line, there wasn't one that met the standard
as closely as this one did. The curves of her neck, topline, ribs, tuck up and stifles are
exceptional, adding to that her well set straight tail and lovely let down hocks with correct
angulation, and extremely strong pastern won me over and it seemed criminal to pass her by.
She has a beautiful head with the flattest of skulls. Very thin rose ears, perhaps carried a
shade high but would be fault judging to penalise her for that. Widely set dark, sound eyes
with prominent frontal bones. Set under a full, non intrusive nose roll is a lovely black nose
with open nostrils. Good width and length of foreface, and with her lovely sweep of unerjaw
she has a really nice 'stand off' expression. She has a super front with correct shoulders.
Elbows set correctly just away from her rib cage. Correct pear shaped body and lovely
brisket. Her perfect length of leg gives her the correct square front. Lovely straight well
proportioned bone to the neatest of feet finishes the picture. She moved correctly front and
rear, holding her beautiful topline. It really was my pleasure to award her with BCC.
