Welsh Kennel Club

Breed: Dachshund (Miniature Wire Haired)

What a lovely entry with so much improvement since I last judged this variety. There is still a wide range of types but a lot of the issues I saw last time have been massively improved on. Mouths were much improved with non giving cause for concern. Rear angulation also was generally much better with many showing good rear drive and less tummy tapping. I was very pleasantly surprised with how good this variety was and was spoilt for choice in many classes. I found many dogs worthy of CC’s and could happily have handed out multiple CC’s in both sexes.

Many thanks to my superb stewards who helped to keep the ring running smoothly.

Veteran Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: BLACK, Mr & Mrs L & K & BLACK Miss E Ch Bassodon Westwood – taller, well proportioned dog with an excellent head and neck. Well laid shoulders with decent forechest. Would prefer slightly longer ribbing. Adequate rear angulation. Moved true coming and going but would like more rear extension. Best Veteran in Breed

Minor Puppy Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: KILROY Mrs J Blackvein Cupid at Janacop – 8 month dog who held his outline well. Ok head, good neck leading into well laid shoulders. Rather long in body but well angulated rear which he used well on the move.

2nd: TOMSETT Mrs S J Dajean Surely A Star – Beautiful head and neck leading into good shoulders, good lengthy ribbing. Rather over angulated behind and ran up on the move today, needs time to settle.

Puppy Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: SMITH, Mrs K & SMITH Misses J & A Alncroft Ivan Inkling – Beautiful young male of excellent proportions, good head and neck leading into very well angulated shoulders with prominent forechest. Well ribbed back with neat rear which he used really well on the move. On the out and back he was parallel showing a clean pair of heels going away and in profile had the correct reach and drive and looked like he could keep going all day. Super temperament and expertly handled by his young handler who should be very proud of him. In the challenge he never stopped showing and despite the best efforts of his father in open dog couldn’t be denied the CC. BPIB.

2nd: SALISBURY Mrs G E Pennywave Nosey Parker at Brocklewood – Another lovely dog with an excellent coat. Lovely head and neck, very well angulated shoulders but slightly too low in front for me. Good body and rear angulation. Not as settled as 1 today and not striding out as well on the move but a good dog who I am sure will hit the top spots.

3rd: TOMSETT Mrs S J Dajean He's A Star

Junior Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: TOMSETT Mrs S J Pinocchio Klara Difino At Dajean (Imp) – Totally different type to the rest of the entry but an impressive dog. B/T dog of a rangier type, with an excellent head and neck leading into excellent front construction. Good ribbing. Slightly over angulated behind but moved very well showing lots of reach and drive in profile. Could be a useful stud dog for the breed.

2nd: NORTH-ROW, Miss E V & NORTH-ROW Mrs J M Hit Sezona Iz Divnogorga – Compact taller brindle of good proportions. Good head and neck leading into well angulated shoulders. Excellent length of ribbing. Ok rear angulation. Super coat and condition. Needed to settle on the move and was toeing in behind slightly but had adequate reach and drive in profile.

Good class where the top 3 could easily change places on another day

1st: RUSSELL Mrs C Russteck The Bruce – Smart cobby dog of good proportions, good head and neck leading into well angulated shoulders. Excellent length of ribbing and well angulated rear. Moved true coming and going with good reach and drive. Pushed really hard in the challenge.

2nd: MILLS-JONES Mrs C Carlita Sunrise JW – Lovely head and length of neck. Very good front angulated with plenty of forechest. Adequate ribbing and good rear angulation. Slightly unsettled on the move today tending to run which spoilt his outline at times but he did show good reach and drive.

3rd: FITZHERBERT STEWART, Mrs A & TOMSETT Mrs S Dajean Starstruck

Open Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: JONES Mrs S J Ch Bimini Starstruck – Smart compact dog of excellent breed type. Good head and length of neck leading into well angulated shoulders. Excellent ribbing and rear angulation which he used so well on the move to power round the ring. He really impressed. In the challenge he was pushed ever step of the way by his precocious son who just pipped him to the post, so this lovely boy had to settle for the RCC today. So good to see he has passed his lovely type and temperament on to his offspring.

2nd: KAY Mrs J & Miss J Kaytian Tempest Over Haiti JW – Red dog with an excellent temperament, good head and neck. Would prefer more layback of shoulder and a longer upper arm. Ok rear angulation. Moved well holding his topline at all times.

2nd: WATKINS Miss K L Blackvein Dasher – This cheeky puppy was beautifully made beneath her puppy fat which sadly rather obscured her shape. She has a lovely head and neck, good shoulders and rear angulation. Moved well for age showing good reach and drive. Rather a soft coat which will need careful attention to make the most of it.

Very well angulated hind quarters which she used so well on the move where she was true coming and going and had the reach and drive I was looking for. Added to this a super temperament which is typical of this breeders’ dogs gave for me the complete package. CC and I was delighted to hear this was her 3rd, congratulations. Although still a junior she had the maturity in the challenge for BOB and just pipped the lovely young puppy dog. CC & BOB
