Windsor Dog Show Society

Breed: Bloodhound

I would like to extend my thanks to the committee for the invitation & my excellent stewards for their work. Although not a large entry, I was pleased with the quality & was quite confident to say that my green card winners were ‘worthy of the title of champion’.

When I approach judging this breed their original hunting purpose is always in the forefront of my mind so it is absolutely crucial to me that a hound is well made with excellent movement. Whilst I want a correct head that is typical as per the standard, I am probably less focused on this aspect as are some breed specialists. Even in a breed that is numerically small there are differences in type, and we all have our preferences. As a judge I am not, however, asked what I would like to live with - I am asked to assess what is nearest to the standard, sound and in good condition ‘on the day’; if it ends up with one I would also like to take home that is the icing on the cake but is certainly not the reason for my choices.

Unfortunately both these boys were a bit rattled by the aircraft & neither really showed themselves to advantage

1st: 6411 MCKENZIE Miss F Tessidez Bullen Of Moorlander (Imp) – 2 yr b&T , masculine head , a tad heavy in top skull for me, good mouth , eyes could be a little tighter , strong neck into shoulders with acceptable angulation , deep chest & straight front, well bodied , moved OK although I do wish he carried his tail a bit better

2nd: 6415 WATSON Lady E Scentall Zorro – OK proportions , mascuiline head with nice eyes , sufficient angulation fore & aft, good lengt of rib but would prefer a firmer topline , good bone , would prefer better feet. Moved OK in front & has a lot of drive in profile . rather wide behind. Well presented & coat in good condition.

1st: 6408 CLARK Miss S Boru's Fifty Mission Cap At Farlap (Imp) – Only just 2 years old , this young man really impressed for his balance and outstanding movement. Whilst his head might be a little plain for some , he is masculine with beautiful clean eyes and an absolutely correct mouth. Good neck that flows into a correctly made body with correct angulation fore and aft . Good strong topline . Correct bone & good feet. He was in good muscular condition but not surprisingly due to his age still needs a bit more substance in body. On the move he really comes into his own – an excellent mover, completely true both ways & correct drive – he really flows around the ring showing powerful, effortless movement. I could have watched him go all day & I think his handler was scared I would ( by the end she seemed to thing she had run round the ring rather alot!) . CC which I was delighted to hear made him up. His movement gave him BOB.

2nd: 6412 PRIESTLEY Ms L S Ch Railside Pluto At Quikotic – a fully mature gentleman , balanced & standing over the correct amount of ground; very typical masculine head with a good expression of correct proportions, good bone & body , in good condition. Good straight front on standing but was not as firm in elbow as 1 in front movement, good side gait. Came into the ring with all guns blazing & caught the eye but seemed to rapidly fizzle out & tended to sink him into himself. Had he maintained the initial enthusiasm he would have pushed 1 more. Res CC.

3rd: 6413 ROWLAND Ms C Castledee Moonlight Sky

1st: 6409 CLARK Miss S Boru's Abstract At Farlap (Imp) –Well balanced young lady of very pleasing proportions, feminine head with correct planes, strong neck well constructed body with good angulation, correct bone , good feet . Excellent movement , certainly the best in bitches today , accurate with excellent drive. RCC

2nd: 6416 WATTS Mrs F Maplemead Doris – A smaller bitch with lovely character, typical head , ok construction, in good coat & condition, sufficient bone & good feet. A less experienced team but both handler & dog showed enthusiasm. When settled movement was acceptable. Just needs a bit more practise.

1st: 6410 HOWIE, Mrs T J & EMRYS-JONES Mrs S Ch Marksbury Hessie – mature bitch of good breed type , pleasing head & expression , strong neck , straight front , good shoulder & rear angulation, correct length of body. In good coat & condition & beautifully presented. Moved OK in front & side gait , lovely tail carriage. To be critical I would prefer better hind movement as she is a bit wide. In the final analysis I just preferred her eye to the limit winner & was pleased to give her the CC.
