Scottish Kennel Club

Breed: Retriever (Golden)

My thanks to the Scottish Kennel Club committee for inviting me to judge the males at this show, and of course to those who gave me an entry. I would also like to thank my excellent steward Fiona Walker who singularly ran my ring and still managed to make me cups of tea!.. thank you.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (6 Entries, 2 Absent)

1st Norris Mrs S FENPINQUE MAGNUM OPUS AT MOLESTREAM this young man has the most beautiful head and expression with dark eyes, excellent pigmentation and correct bite. Stands on great feet with good bone, he moves well and has everything I am looking for in a 7 month old puppy.

2nd Kevan Ms E MOLOKO WALLACE THE BRAVE the most glorious deep gold coat on this puppy, would prefer a little more work in the head, but he is so young there is much to still develop. His bone development is superb for his age and he shows a great temperament for showing. I will watch his future with interest.

1st Clarke Mrs VB OUSEVALE TOBERMORY Worthy winner of this puppy class, he has a level topline which was well held on the move, excellent bone and a straight front. He carries a thick double coat, all in excellent order. Great outgoing disposition which was quite obvious in the way he shows himself. Pushed hard for BPIB

JUNIOR DOG (13 Entries, 4 Absent) This class was quite a challenge to judge with these young males all at different stages of development.

1st Hodgson Mrs PE & Mr FJ TANALIA MEANT TO BE My winner was being rather full on with his handler, the availability of treats rather putting his attention out of the window.. but when he settled he showed off his superb construction. Quite a strong head on his adolescent frame, dead level topline and strong quarters.

2nd Laidlaw-Good Mrs J & McShane Mrs C FHAIRMHOR HAUD YER WHEESHT AT RIGERIN Head yet to finish on this Junior, but he stands well on excellent bone and superb cat like feet. He is well up on his pasterns, and uses his well bent stifles to full advantage. Exemplary attitude on the move, well handled.

YEARLING DOG (8 Entries, 1 Absent)

1st Cullen Mrs E RIGERIN BARNYARD DAWG AT AUCHINBRECK Rather heavy all through, which could be improved with more trimming around his neck and shoulders, but for me his construction is superb. He took the class with his very good forehand and well laid shoulders, level topline and beautiful stifles giving plenty of width in the upper thigh.

2nd Vicars Mrs M & Miss CJ PEERSBROOK GAME SET MATCH JW A cream boy with a correct double coat, well handled he moved soundly.

UNDERGRADUATE DOG (7 Entries, 1 Absent)

1st Bell Mrs FV & Mr M HOAALOHA MAUI this very nice puppy stood third in the strong puppy class, so I was delighted to give him the top spot here as he has so much to offer. He is utterly balanced and carries the most gorgeous wavy coat, a good sized frame which will take some time to fill and a head which still has plenty of time to develop. The more he moved the better he got... and I was absolutely thrilled to see him carry himself with such aplomb in the special beginners group at the end of the day when he took a very credible 3rd place. Well done, I shall watch his development with interest.

2nd McCormack Miss S FLYNGALEE SIGNATURE stood down the line in a mixed Junior class, but this is another dog that the more he moves the better he gets.. absolutely floats around the ring using very little energy. He has a straight front, well up on his pasterns with perfect feet. A soft expression on a masculine head, not quite the forehand of the winner.

GRADUATE DOG (7 Entries, 1 Absent)

1st Walker Ms EJ & Roberts Dr L GLOI U'KNOW WHO JW One of the best movers of the day, his stride is long and free and it is not just that he moves effortlessly with perfect drive from his strong quarters but that he carries his head perfectly with pride to be doing a good job for his handler without his tail rising any higher than his dead level topline. Absolutely text book movement and carriage. So often you see a dog move with drive but their head is down as if they really are doing a task they don’t relish, the breed is required to be biddable so if asked to move they really should respond with “good! lets go, I love doing anything with you... “

2nd McDonald Miss M LAMANCHA MAGICAL MOMENTS JW this dog is beautifully turned out, he had a melting head and expression with correct dark pigment. Moved accurately, and handled very well. It was a lovely class and he was pushed very hard by

POSTGRADUATE DOG (10 Entries, 2 Absent)

1st Anderson Mrs L LINCHAEL SALVO JW This dog is maturing into a real cracker. I love in particular his beautiful head, and clean muscular neck, I hate to see a throaty dog, but there is no sign of that here, his set on of neck is perfect leading into well laid shoulders on top of a beautiful forehand. Level topline, well held on the move, good ribs and plenty of heart room. His elbows are close fitting and his front movement true. Strong quarters drive him effortlessly around the ring.

2nd McShane Mrs C RIGERIN GONNAE NO DAE THAT A lovely outline on this dog, who I think could be improved with a sleeker trim around his neck and shoulders. Excellent bone and feet, well up onto his pasterns, short coupled and strong through his quarters.

LIMIT DOG (9 Entries, 3 Absent)

1st Towers Mrs S & Henderson Mrs M ALIBREN GALILEO TO WESTERVANE Another young dog, not carrying a full coat but who is coming into his own and looking very promising for the future. He has a stunning outline, hardly a surprise as he is so well constructed. Lovely head and eye, straightest of fronts with excellent bone, stands four square on neat tidy feet and looks a strong dog. He has a long stride and I think would probably take a faster pace on the move to advantage, but he is true and sound and I like him a lot.

2nd Bolton Mr RC & Mrs J STANROPH SUPER STRAVEGANTE AT SHIRESMILL (IMP ESP) JW I love the construction of this dog, level topline, excellent tail set. Good rib with plenty of heart room. Well bent stifles and a good forehand. Would like to see him tighter in his feet and pasterns as this cost him the class.

OPEN DOG (7 Entries, 2 Absent)

1st Trinder Mr A SH CH THORNYWAIT SAN VALENTINO JW ShCM A very worthy title holder, so much to like about this dog. His head is to me, just gorgeous... obviously masculine but soft and so gentle in his expression. Straight front with his elbows held close, good feet and well up on his pasterns. He has a good reach of clean muscular neck, set onto a well made front. He has well sprung ribs. His movement is true and confident, tail carriage is correct, level with his topline on the move. Handled and presented very well and was today awarded the reserve CC

2nd Dunbar Miss L & Ms I SH CH LINIRGOR TOMICH JW Quite a strong head on this well made male. Dark eye and correct bite. He is totally balanced, and powerful on the move, just a wee bit proud of his tail. His construction is excellent, short coupled and well ribbed. Strong quarters which he uses to full advantage, hocks well let down and straight. He has a correct double coat.

VETERAN DOG (5 Entries, 1 Absent)

1st Brown Mr MR & Mrs S GUNMARSH TAMARIND STAR OVER IPCRESS JW Nine years old and looking absolutely fabulous. Masculine in every respect, but gives a very kindly and happy aura about him. Happy to be in the ring, biddable to his handler and he moved with such precision. Moved straight and true, head up, tail carriage correct. He is straight in front, tidy elbows and excellent bone. Well developed chest and rib with plenty of depth through the heart. His ribs are well sprung. His topline is dead level and one of the best points on this dog is the seamless way his topline carries on to his tail. The tail set and carriage is perfect. All in all a great example of a fully mature Golden Retriever, still looking fabulous at nine years of age, I was delighted to give him his second CC and hope he takes his crown, he deserves to. Needless to say he was our Best Veteran in Breed.

2nd McAleese Mr J & Mrs A LOCHTAYMOR MURRAYMINT FOR GLORMHORCU Longer cast than the winner and a wee bit heavy over the shoulder, but he has good angles and moved out very well. Beautifully handled to full advantage.

KC GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME DOG (2 Entries, 0 Absent)

1st Rose Mrs DE & Neil Ms M GILDAS AMORI INFINITI (IMP SWE) This dog was shown in the most glorious coat and condition, black nose and dark kind eyes. He made me smile... one of those Goldens who was having such a great time it shone out of him, I would imagine he would approach anything and everything with great enthusiasm. One of the points of the breed standard is that they should possess a natural working ability, not an easy thing to judge for in the show ring but when you get a dog like this, wagging his tail throughout the class with his eyes fixed on his handler you just know that if you had him out in the field he would be ready for anything. Agile with strong quarters and well bent stifles. Not a big dog, but he has plenty to offer and I found much to like about him.

2nd Warden Mrs AR EYEVALLEY MACALLAN OF GLENTOCHTY ShCM Rather lethargic in comparison to his class mate, and heavier all through. Good bone and straight front he also has a very well shaped head.

In full agreement with my co-judge our: Best Puppy was Clarkson’s DRUMKILTY ON IMPULSE who presented a more finished picture than the slightly younger dog puppy.

Best of Breed was Brown’s GUNMARSH TAMARIND STAR OVER IPCRESS JW

The bitch ticket winner was a favourite of mine, Clarkson’s CH DRUMKILTY HIBERNIA JW so much to like about this beautiful full champion, but she really was losing her mojo by the time we got to the challenge
