PBGV MANCHESTER 2019- JUDGE GAVIN ROBERTSON

I found this a very challenging entry to sort mainly down the variation of shapes and sizes in both sexes. Straight forelegs which by now should be the norm in the breed were lacking in quite a few. Like the GBGV the tail of the breed is a real hallmark in its length and thickness but more importantly in its carriage. Too many are getting like pipe cleaners and carried bolt upright or certainly not like a sabre.. Whilst it’s important to reward the real compact dogs for type it cannot be to the detriment of movement. Overweight or badly constructed dogs wont do their job of function and whilst i did not have any today that were too long, there was a couple where a shorter loin would have helped. Coat textures were good but I did have a few where there is no density, the standard is quite pricise, this can be addressed and rectified fairly easily. That said i was happy with my 2 winners, both good examples of the breed with many attributes and would happily have them in my kennel...

1)

Eye catching youngster who is very collected already, pleasing head and expression, ear placement is good with a slight fold and not too long, he has good bone and neat feet, well sprung ribs and good body to him, not the finished article yet and needs to come up on leg slightly but he has style, that lovely busy nature the breed should have, super rear quarters with low set hocks, excellent short thick tail with a harsh jacket.BP and DCC

2) another nice typey dog with lots to like, short muzzle, a little weak in underjaw, expressive eyes, good, short ears, just preferred front angles on winner, very good harsh coat all through, thick tail carried well, muscular rear with nice width, good size, steady mover and im sure with time will open up a little more. RDCC

JD

1)lovely shape and proportions. Just the right length of leg to him, good skull, short ears, needs to develop in chest and is a little wide in front. Super topline which he holds on the move, would prefer thicker and better tail carriage, strong rear with low set hocks, harsh coat, lots to like, nice type, moves well in profile.

PGD

1) good size, masculine but not overdone head piece, dark eye, square muzzle,Nice shape under the coat, needs more density to the coat but is harsh, level topline with good ribs, tail a bit long. Low set hocks, active mover,busy attitude.

2)bigger framed dog all through. Nice eye and expression, square muzzle, well sprung ribs, dense coat, thick tail. Moderate angles. Prefer more reach and drive, would just like to scale him down.

LD

1) Balanced skull with short muzzle,good eye shape,ears a tad long, nicely proportioned dog but prefer more angles front and back, super harsh coat with firm topline. Nice size,short thick tail and outgoing temperament but prefer more reach and drive. 

2) masculine dog, eye and ear is good. Tight feet, ideally like a better lay of shoulder. Ok back and loin, short thick tail, deep chest. Coat too soft. Steady mover but lacks animation 

VD

1)masculine dog in lovely condition for 9, his head is balanced but i would like a shorter ear and a little shorter in muzzle. Nice chest and ribs, well angled rear, ok tail. A bit wide in front and tail could be thicker. Purposeful mover.

PB

1)raw puppy but has a nice shape and proportions , detailed head with short folded ear., neat feet, level back, ok bone,neat feet, ribs extending well back, a bit straight in front which makes her loose on the move but overall a typey bitch

2)this bitch has a lovely head piece, correct all through with a lovely soft expression and dark eye, dark with a square muzzle, today she is carrying far too much weight which is spoiling her shape completely and movement. Harsh body coat, lots to like with a strong rear, short tail and big ribs, up to size but i love her type. Would like to judge her again when she has been on a crash diet.

JB

1)feminine bitch, muzzle a little fine, well placed ears, good bone for size, compact feet, ribs extending well back, harsh coat all through. Loin could be a little shorter. Thick tail, has typical pbgv movement and attitude. Pleasing all round

2) compact bitch with good substance and bone. A little heavy today making her look shorter in neck, neat feet, super thick short tail. Ideally like more width in rear angles. Has good breed type, 

PGB

1)won on her overall type, has a feminine head with short ears, square muzzle, well sprung ribs. Neat feet and has good bone for size. Lovely short tail and whilst i would like more reach in front she has good points, typical busy pbgv movement.

2)a taller bitch but still within size, just would like more body, spring of rib and bone to her frame. Good skull, Lovely dark eye, not totally settled, has a well angled rear but not that collected.

LB

1)this bitch has a detailed feminine head with a melting expression, dark eyes, a nice fold to her ear, muscular neck with good lay of shoulder, strong bone with big ribs, she could be a tad shorter in loin. A lovely dense harsh coat all through shown in lovely condition.a strong level back with a short tail carried totally right in a sabre like fashion, she comes into herself on the move with a lovely driving rear holding her topline at all times, lots to like and would happily have her in my kennel. CC and BOB.

2)nicely compacted bitch, a little plain in head, short ears, a bit flat in foot, short level topline, good tail, moderate rear but would like more animation on move which is where winner scored.

 OB

1)mixed class where all 4 have breed qualities but are all different in size and make up, winner is an honest bitch.balanced skull, well placed ears, eye could be darker, lovely dense and harsh coat , well sprung ribs, thick tail. Low hocks, her forelegs could be straighter, would like a little less of her but she is a positive mover with a firm back and good tail carriage 

2)feminine headed bitch but ideally like a bit more bone and substance to her all through,neat feet, level back. Tail could be thicker and carried more sabre like, Low hocks, full of enthusiasm, typically pbgv temperament. I liked her movement and she was the best for size and proportions in this class.
