Bath Canine Society

Breed: Spaniel (Field)

Thanks to the Committee and all their hard work the ground was in fabulous condition which gave all the dogs an opportunity to show off their movement although that did seem to make one or two a little frisky on occasions. I tried not to focus on one particular part of the dog as fault judging, although easy, can blinker a judge into not looking at the dog as a whole but on saying that I was a little concerned at the number of mouth faults that appear to be creeping in which is something that needs to be watched.

1st:  MOSS Mrs A E Fecimus Chase The Dream To Ewtor. Well grown mature puppy, still a baby in head but has good proportions and the promise of chiseling to come. He has a lovely forehand and strong flat bone. He is a good sized boy who doesn’t need to get much bigger. Excelled in topline and rib and once he listened to his handler moved out well with a strong front action. Will be interesting to watch how he matures, pleased to hear after that he achieved his JW today BP

2nd:  WEBBER Mr M & Mrs L Fecimus Star Trooper At Trevoris. Such a shame he decided today was the day to have a teenage strop but managed to assess him with a little patience. Not as forward as 1st but has a pleasing outline and firm topline he held well standing and moving. As with my winner his head needs to develop but has a well-shaped eye and good length to his skull. He was a happy sound mover just not so keen on standing today.

1st:  MCDONALD-WATTS Mr D Cochen Hocus Pocus. This black boy is very masculine in head with the darkest of eyes and balanced proportions. Well set shoulders with enough upperarm and forechest and plenty of bone. Balanced ratios of body to leg and really well muscled rear giving plenty of drive. Just a touch loose in front which I’m sure will tighten with time.

2nd:  RUSSELL, Miss V J & PALM Ms A Kingsmist Endeavour. A taller liver boy who needs to fill out quite a bit at the moment, lovely refined head, good length of neck with a pleasing flow into the shoulder. Moved out well though a little uncoordinated at times but when he gained control of his legs he showed a great action.

1st:  GRIFFITHS, Mrs J P & GRIFFITHS Miss C J Sonnetend Too Funky. A very promising young black dog with a really typey head showing the true nobility of the breed and the most melting expression. A pleasing size with flat bone and tight feet, balanced angulation and gleaming coat, he flowed around the ring and once he stopped being silly he showed lovely footfall front and rear. I gave serious consideration to him for top honours but today he had to give way to the more mature boys.

2nd:  MURRAY Mr K J & Mrs G L Nadavin Wallace. Bigger framed liver boy with substance and bone. He has balanced head planes with good length of foreface and a soft eye, just not quite as refined as 1st. Strong neck leading to a well laid shoulder and firm topline and broad thighs. Good rear action showing drive

1st:  RUSSELL, Miss V J & PALM Ms A Thandiwe Legato Con Moto. Liver roan who has a true Field shape, the more you look at him the more he shouts Field Spaniel. He has a classic head with a gravely noble look from a kindly eye. Firm in neck flowing nicely into a laid back shoulder, good length of upperarm and correct ratios of body to leg. Deep well sprung rib under a firm topline and strong coupling.. He is a fraction let down in rear but carries his tail correctly on the move where he showed off his power and drive. Everything came together today and I was delighted to award him the CC

2nd:  DAVIES Mr J & Mrs P Elgert Let's Dance At Benbreac. Well built liver dog of just the right size with excellent bone and the best of feet, would not want any more weight on him. His head has a stamp of nobility running through it from his roman nose to his well shaped eye, lean cheeks and good length of skull. Firm through the neck and shoulder with a lovely front assembly that is matched by a nicely angulated rear which he used to give plenty of propulsion, a little exuberant at times but settled in the challenge to earn the RCC

1st:  GRIFFITHS Mrs J P Sh Ch Sonnetend Tic Tac Toe WW18. Eye catching black dog put down in the most fantastic condition. He has the best of heads with a melting expression, chiselled brow and lowset ear. Presented a balanced outline with deep rib and strong bone. Smooth driving action and a lovely profile movement but when it came to the challenge he was not quite as positive in front as my winners.

2nd:  SANDERSON Mr M R & Mrs C R NL Ch Thandiwe Arthur Sixpence Bwnl'18. This boy is all power and strength and it certainly showed on the move. Masculine head quite strong all through with a good amount of brainroom. Deep well sprung ribs gave plenty of heart and lung room. Tended to stand over his front a bit which made him stand a little wide but when he relaxed everything fell into place. Not quite in the best of coats today

Another of correct size with a pleasing head of balanced proportions, a kind eye and good depth of muzzle. Nicely balanced in outline and proportion but still needs to fill out a little. Good profile movement just a touch close behind

1st:  MACBAIN, Miss A C L & SHEPHERD Mrs K J Fecimus Written In The Stars. Dainty 9 month girl with bags of enthusiasm, cheeky expression and the happiest of dispositions. Head needs to develop and finish but good length to backskull and lean in cheek. Nicely angulated throughout and really came alive on the move, so balanced and true she was a joy to watch

All at different levels of maturity making a bit of a headache in sorting them out

1st:  HARDING Mr M J & Mrs A E Kingsmist Miss Marple. Black girl of just over 12 months the most mature in appearance but not in outlook as she was determined to have fun today. True Field head with nicely shaped muzzle, well shaped eye of the correct colour and a balanced backskull. Lovely front assembly, just needs to drop in rib and tuckup but her topline was strong and she had a well muscled rear. She was a little erratic on the move but when she did settle she showed a good profile action.

2nd:  REECE Mrs E Kingsmist Phryne Fischer At Broomeece. Smaller framed liver with a pretty head. kind eye and good length of muzzle. Well set shoulder with return of upper arm. Good spring of rib and pleasing flat bone. Moved out ok but just preferred the overall strength of 1st today.

3rd:  PORTER Mrs J Kingsmist Agatha Christie At Winsbrook

1st:  STONE, Miss A H & STONE Mr & Mrs M S Sonnetend Sunday Girl. Such a gorgeous head, soft gentle expression with chiselling under the eye and lean in cheek, muzzle and skull nicely balanced giving that noble expression that so epitomises a Field. Classic outline, just the right size with flat bone and excellent angulation. Plenty of rib under a firm topline and well muscled rear. Showed a fabulous profile movement and was true in both directions. Still needs to finish off but well deserved RCC

2nd:  WARD Mrs N L Elgert Lady Marmalade At Simbarra. Quite a mature liver of good shape and size, she looked a little square but when you get your hands on her the proportions are correct. Feminine head with plenty of work in it and eye of the correct colour and shape, balanced amount of backskull with a clearly defined occiput. Good reach of neck which led into correctly placed shoulders and a pleasing return of upper arm. Strong topline, well developed rear which gave true movement.

She has a good flow from nose to tail, well developed forechest and her ribcage has depth with good length, lovely forechest with width behind, showed ground covering movement would just like her feet to be tighter

2nd:  WARD Mrs N L Elgert Lady Marmalade At Simbarra (repeat)

1st:  OSBORN Ms G Elgert Lady Sta'dust JW A cracking black bitch who really catches the eye, she has lovely body lines combining elegance and strength. She has such a feminine head, correct eye shape, well chiselled and lean with a lot of brainroom. Impressed by her body depth and spring of rib, correct ratios and super flat bone, ribs carried well back and strong hindquarters. Moved out steadily with an unhurried stride that really covered the ground CC BOB

2nd:  HARRIS Ms J M Thandiwe Lady of the Knight Just loved this bitches head, most melting expression, correct eye shape, well chiselled and lean set off by long lowset ears. Well set shoulders with good forechest, presented a strong outline with loads of depth and lovely quarters, lacked a little muscling and tended to move a little wide behind today
