Welsh Kennel Club

Breed: Lagotto Romagnolo

My thanks to WKC for their invitation to judge this breed and especial thanks to all those that supported me with such a quality entry. I thoroughly enjoyed the appointment and appreciated the way that all my decisions were accepted in such a sporting manner. This is a breed very close to my heart and I truly appreciate the help and mentoring I have received in learning more about them. A couple of observations - firstly in some instances there was quite a lot of very close hind movement. Secondly coat - some were a little soft and I felt lacked the necessary curl. In some dogs the guard hairs were more prevalent than in others.

Short neck leading to correct shoulder placement. Length of leg correct in proportion to wither to elbow. Good bend of stifle with hocks well let down. In excellent coat and condition. Well ribbed back to short loin. Coat not quite at its best at the moment. Good length of thigh leading to hocks well let down. Not quite the movement of winner.

1st: NELSON Miss J Il Granaio Dei Malatesta Richard At Nelbekio (Imp). At just over a year old this dog has an excellent outline - totally square with the correct proportions from wither to elbow and from the elbow to the ground. His head is correct length of skull to muzzle. Short neck leading to correct forehand construction. Well sprung ribcage with short loin. Powerful hindquarters with good width of second thigh and well let down hocks. Coat of excellent texture with prevalent guard hairs. Moved accurately both fore and aft with good open side gait when viewed in profile.

2nd: WARD, Mrs J & FRY Ms C Kan Trace Viking Invader (Imp). A very striking youngster who instantly catches the eye. Excellent overall balance with correct length of leg. Excellent head with strong jaw. Neck of moderate length. Short in back with correct tail set and strong hindquarters. A very close call between him and the winner. On the day I felt that the winner had the slightly better rear movement

1st: NELSON, Miss J & FERGUSON, Mrs L & BARKER Mrs M Mizani Dioro Over Savio. The first thing that one notices about this dog is that he is robust and sturdy. No flashiness. He has a square outline and is correct in his dimensions from wither to elbow and elbow to ground. His head is of 3/2 from skull to muzzle. When viewed from the front his chest is of the correct width with his elbows close to the body. Well ribbed back leading to strong loin and powerful well muscled hindquarters. In excellent coat with good curl and the guard hairs prevalent over the back and croup. Moved out well with good open side gait. BD

2nd: MCALLISTER Ms P Mizani Diorbe Of Slovakia Sh.CM. Another great favourite of mine and very close up to the winner. On another day they would change places. Excellent outline. His head is of perfect proportions with well set ears. Strong, short neck leading to correct forehand assembly. Big rib leading to short loin. Well made hindquarters with well let down hocks and good width of second thigh. Today his coat didn’t quite have the “roughness”of the winner and he was a fraction close moving away but very worthy of RBD.

1st: MORT Mrs L Il Granaio Dei Malatesta Strawberry Syrup At Arcti. I was totally captivated by this puppy who showed with all the confidence of an old timer. Although she was the youngest in the class she has true breed type. She has the correct outline when viewed in profile. Her skull to muzzle proportions are totally correct at 3/2 and she has a good width of skull with well set ears. Her forelegs are of the correct length in proportion to her height. Her ribcage is well developed and with a short loin. A coat of excellent texture with guard hairs already coming through well. Good length length of lower thigh with big squarely placed hocks. On the move she was precise both fore and aft and showed good forward extension when viewed in profile. BP.

2nd: FRY Miss C Bedeslea Ticataboo. My notes say “naughty”!!! Initially I thought she would be the winner of this class as she is more forward in development than the winner. She is beautifully balanced with the correct square outline. Excellent head. Short neck. Correct width of chest when viewed from the front. Good topline and correct tail set. On the move she had a different agenda altogether and although displayed a good open side gait she was not co-operating for and aft. Nonetheless a lovely bitch.

1st: MORT Mrs L Radiva Baby Oh Cherrie (Imp) Another favourite of mine and she continues to impress me. Her head is perfectly proportioned with well set ears and strong jaw. Short neck leading to correct forehand construction. To be ultra picky her forelegs could have a fraction more length. Big ribcage with short loin. Strong hindquarters with well developed second thigh and well let down hocks. Moved accurately both fore and aft and showed good forward extension when viewed in profile. Coat has good density - just needs a fraction more curl. RBB

2nd: COLLIS Mr D R & Mrs L C Iteru Riccia Piattone. Well balanced with good square outline when viewed in profile. Her head is dimensionally correct but I would like more strength in muzzle. Correct forehand construction. Narrow through chest leading to good width of ribcage. Coat is a little soft at present. Good topline and tailset. I would prefer a little more moderation in rear angulation. Moved with good drive.

1st: FERGUSON Mrs L & Mr A Mizani Jola Briar. I have not judged this bitch before but I totally loved her. For me she had everything I was looking for. First off she has a totally square outline when viewed in profile and she is what the standard asks for - robust with a rustic appearance - not flashy or overdone in any way. Her head is perfectly proportioned and she has a good width and depth of skull in that when you put your hand over it, it fills the palm of your hand with the widest part being across the zygomatic arches. Her neck is of moderate length and slightly arched leading to well placed shoulders and upper arm of equal length. The height ratio from wither to elbow and elbow to ground is correct and the chest viewed from the front is of the correct width with large elbows placed close to the body. Well sprung ribcage. Slightly falling topline leading to correctly set tail. Her hindquarters are well made and muscular with good width of second thigh. On the move she was accurate both fore and aft and showed good reach of stride when viewed in profile. Her coat is of excellent texture - the undercoat evident and a good spread of guard hairs across the croup area. A total treat to have the privilege of judging her. BB and BOB.

2nd: MONK Mrs L & Mr J Mizani Diorbe Of Vienna. Another top quality bitch from this kennel. She is beautifully in proportion with a square outline and correct height proportions from wither to elbow and elbow to ground. Excellent head shape with correctly set ears. Short neck leading to correct forehand angulation. Well ribbed with short loin and well made hindquarters. Coat needs to just have a little more curl to complete the picture. Moved well fore and aft with good length of stride when viewed in profile.
