Welsh Kennel Club

Breed: Retriever (Labrador)

My thanks to the WKC for their kind invitation to judge Labradors today. As always I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I felt that there was an excellent and very sportsmanlike atmosphere throughout. As a “non breed” person I am loath to comment too much about my particular findings but two things did strike me. Firstly tailsets - especially on the males. Rather than being a continuation of the back line they appeared to have been stuck on in completely the wrong place and this detracted from an otherwise pleasing outline. The other thing was rear movement - some were very close going away and in some instances the back feet were almost crossing over. Temperaments were as I would expect excellent as was presentation. Thank you to all exhibitors for your entry. It was a great privilege to judge your dogs.

GD (8)
1st: BRITTON Mrs A M Llanstinan Louis Lewis Bowstones. I thought this young dog was absolutely stunning. One of my “finds” of the day. He was just what I was looking for - he has the power and strength that the breed requires - but also a decent enough length of leg that would enable him to cross a field of plough with ease. Excellent outline with true head of correct skull to muzzle proportions. Clean neck leading to excellent layback of shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm. His chest is of good width and depth and he has the correct ribcage. Level topline with well set tail. Powerful hindquarters with good width of second thigh and strong parallel hocks. Moved well both fore and aft and demonstrated a good length of stride when viewed in profile. He pushed all the way for the top spot but had to give way to the more mature limit winner. His day will undoubtedly come. Delighted to award him the RCC.
2nd: ALLEN, Mr A C & BOTT Mr R P Tessholly's Explorer With Allenie. Another quality dog. Well balanced all through. Excellent head and expression. Not quite as clean in neck as winner. Good depth of chest. Well ribbed. Strong hindquarters with good width of second thigh. Showed good profile movement - could be a little tidier fore and aft.
3rd: DRUGGAN Miss K Mafia Lab's Taboo Webster At Balladoole JW

PGD (4, 2)
1st: HARVEY-MAJOR Ms L Linjor Rigsby JW. Excellent overall balance. Typical head with clean cheeks and soft expression. Clean neck leading to well laid shoulder. Deep chest. Good length of leg. Well ribbed back with short loin. Strong, well muscled hindquarters with good width of second thigh. Excellent bone and feet. Moved accurately both fore and aft and then really lengthened his stride well to demonstrate an excellent open side gait. Another than I considered for top honours.
2nd: ELLIS, Mr & Mrs A & S W & MATULLA Mr & Mrs D Dolwen Button Moon JW. Another quality well balanced dog. Good head shape with soft expression. Not as clean in neck as the winner and slightly loaded over the shoulder. Excellent depth and width of chest. Well ribbed back to short loin and powerful hindquarters. Moved well with good drive.

LD (11, 2)
1st: JOHNSON Mrs J & Mr G Cremino Chilly Pepper Sh.CM. I loved him as a youngster when I judged the breed two years ago and all he needed then was time. Time has now arrived and today he looked the best I have seen him. He stood out in what was a good class. Excellent overall balance. Typical head with ears well set and the softest of expressions. Clean neck leading to copybook forehand construction. His chest if of good width with the elbows tight to the brisket and well placed under the body. Correct spring of rib with short loin. Level topline with correctly set tail. Powerful hindquarters with correctly turned stifles and good width of second thigh. Excellent coat texture. Presented to perfection and handled to advantage to get the best out of him. His movement was true both fore and aft and covered the ground well when viewed in profile. Totally fit for purpose and another that could cross a field of plough with ease. Although pushed hard by the Graduate winner he had the finish and maturity to take CC and later BOB.
2nd: FELTON-PAGE Mrs A M Marshwiggle Mr Carson JW Sh.CM. Another quality dog who is well balanced throughout. Good head shape. I would prefer a fractionally darker eye. Clean neck into well laid shoulder. Excels in forehand construction. Correct ribcage with short loin and well made hindquarters. Moved well both fore and aft and with good open side gait when viewed in profile.
