Judging Critique

I’d like to thank the show committee for inviting me to judge terriers at their limited show. The rings were spacious and the venue was warm and welcoming. Measures were taken to minimize the spread of kennel cough with all judges asking exhibitors to show their dog’s teeth. Many thanks to my stewards who kept the ring running efficiently and to the many exhibitors who entered under me. There were several dogs I would have loved to take home with me.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier O (1) 1. Moffat’s Mournestaffs Knockcree for Maremmrob, A lovely natured 9 month old black stafford bitch with a good bite and nice white teeth. Good level topline with a nice spring of rib. Tailset ok. A little unsettled today but ring presence will come with more experience and maturity, BOB.

Border Terrier O (3,2) 1. McHardy’s Foxtrot Pickle, This 9 month old boy was another with a lovely nature. He had a lovely shaped head with small ears, a good stop, great bite and big masculine teeth. Narrow of rib with a good thick pelt. Loved his rear angulation and both his side and rear movement, BOB.

Cairn Terrier O (2) 1. Lamb and Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Come Dancing with Macmoon, Lots to like about this 19 month old boy. Good head with nicely defined stop, good bite and teeth. He cast a lovely profile with his depth of chest, level topline and correct tailset, BOB TG3. 2. Lamb and Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Fable of Macmonn Sh.CM Ir Vet Ch, A fit for function dog, you’d be forgiven for not guessing he is almost 10 years old. Well-muscled with the correct harsh coat and good for bone. Moved out with drive and as keen as can be. Handled well.

Fox Terrier (Smooth) O (1) 1. Rougvie’s Zetamaz Storm Warning, This standalone 2 year old dog had a lovely outline. Nice long foreface with a clean flat skull and high ears. Good depth of chest, well sprung ribs, short in back with a beautiful high tailset with correct carriage and lots behind. Well balanced, BOB, TG4.

Airedale Terrier O (3,1) This was a tricky class to place as I really liked a lot about both of these bitches 1. Graham’s Nedella Showtime at Thistleaire Sh.CM, A 3 year old bitch with a thick harsh coat of deep colour and good furnishings. Lovely shaped head with a flat skull and dark eye. She held her ears correctly when she needed to. Good depth of chest and spring of rib. Good turn of stifle and rear angulation. Movement was fluid and with drive. She won on balance and maturity BOB, TG2. 2. Bain’s Unique In All Ways of Malton (IMP NL), A 2 year old bitch who was shorter coupled than 1 and another great mover with long steady strides. Good mouth and bite. Nice level topline, correct coat and good furnishings, preferred her tailset to 1’s.

AVNSC Terrier Grad (3,1) 1. Farmer & Stephen’s Duvessa Rose of Tudor Seayess, Bull Terrier (Miniature), I loved this sparky 9 month old bitch as soon as she entered the ring and my eye kept coming back to her. She has a superb head with her ears bang on top and small dark almond shaped eyes full of alertness. Correct mouth and strong underjaw. Level topline leading to a correct tailset. Moved out steadily and with drive with spot on rear action. Still has maturing and filling out to do but you can see what is to come and it all looks good. BAVNSC, TG1, BTSMP. 2. Rougvie’s Turflindie Kirrie Dumpling, Lakeland Terrier, This smart 3 year old bitch was in tip-top condition despite having a litter 12 weeks earlier. She has kept her topline and coat which was groomed to perfection with full furnishings. Good head and correct earset. Well angulated and muscled hind quarters. One of the most game dogs of the day.

AVNSC Terrier O (5,1) 1. Anderson’s Oregill Hot Rod to Corrievackie, Lakeland Terrier, This keen 5 year old boy cut a lovely masculine profile with his depth of chest, straight front, level topline with tail set high on top. He had a good head, correct earset and a sharp dark eye. His coat had a good texture and was beautifully groomed with suitable furnishings to balance him nicely. 2. Mitchell & Stephen’s Mysibul’s Of Amazing Grace from Seayess, Bull Terrier (Miniature), This 2 year old feminine bitch was all quality and stood out among the others in the class with her drive and movement. Lovely shaped head topped with ears straight up and pleasing expression. Bite and teeth correct. Good barrel shape with a strong front on sturdy straight legs. Solidly built hind quarters that could work all day long.

AV Terrier Special Minor Puppy (2,0) 1. Farmer & Stephen’s Duvessa Rose of Tudor Seayess, Bull Terrier (Miniature) BTSMP, 2. McHardy’s Foxtrot Pickle.

AV Terrier Special Puppy (2,0), 1 Graham’s Thistleaire Touch of Frost, This 9 month old bitch is the full package and I wasn’t surprised to learn that it was her dam who won TG2. A well balanced feminine bitch with depth of chest, level toplinegood turn of stifle, and nicely developed hind quarters. Beautiful rich coloured harsh coat, nicely presented with first-rate furnishings. Excellent shaped head with flat skull and dark alert eyes. Mouth all correct. Moved out with drive and at one with her handler. I was delighted to watch her go on to win Best Special Puppy in Show. 2. Moffat’s Mournestaffs Knockcree for Maremmrob
