JAPANESE SHIBA INU

JUDGE – MRS TRACY MORGAN

My thanks to Leeds Committee for their warm hospitality, and to my two wonderful stewards for keeping things flowing nicely (even through the thunderstorm). Thanks to all for your sportsmanship, it really does make a huge difference to the enjoyment of everyone’s day!

I was incredibly pleased with the soundness in construction and mind of my entry overall, the quality of presentation was also second to none. There are plenty of areas in which the breed has improved substantially over the last two decades since I graced the ring, however I feel compelled to mention areas that did concern me. Urajiro (ghosting/white markings) is a very distinct pattern. Complete white masks are certainly not urajiro. This needs to be considered within breeding programs please as it seems to have become an issue and had quite an effect on my placings. Size has once again become erratic (it seems to do this in cycles), the Shiba is the smallest native Japanese breed and mere centimetres divides them from the medium sized dogs. My final observation for concern was the coat structure and texture. Where has all the hard/harsh outer jacket vanished too? I can appreciate and empathise with any dog being out of coat given our recent climate, but to have dogs carrying a full compliment of undercoat and not a single guard hair is somewhat concerning. The importance of a correct coat becomes all too evident in a shower of rain!

Thankfully tail carriage has improved since I last judged, though handlers purposefully adjusting tails when stacked to make them tighter eludes me? Mouths were sufficiently good all through.

I was more than happy with my line up in both sexes giving me a beautiful BOB, thrilled to see my best puppy take puppy group 2 and my Veteran take Veteran group 3 CONGRATULATIONS

6 month old, handsome baby at his first show. He handled the thunder and lightening with true Shiba spirit, dismissing it’s relevance to the job at hand. A really nice headpiece which is maturing just as it should, a series of harmonious lines and angles, correct ratios and two dark eyes set into the head with that lovely oblique angle to give the most exquisite expression. A proudly arched neck into a moderate shoulder. Good feet propping up adequate straight bone, good topline and underline, strong lion leading to a moderate rear which he used to great effect. Crowned with a high set tail to create a very impressive and balanced outline. Moved well and showed like a seasoned veteran! Turned out in tip top condition. BPD-BPB-PG2

1st: 1575 MAY Miss D M Burwen I Am Bee'lzebub At Ayupduck

11 month old handsome lad who is maturing nicely. Another who handled the thunder with true shiba spirit. A nice head of good angles and ratios. Dark oblique eye and a lovely expression. Neat ears, well set on and carried. Arched neck, moderate shoulder, straight front propped up on good feet. Correct topline, strong loin leading to a moderate rear, crowned with a high set tail which was not too tightly carried. He had a nice balance of outline and moved well when he settled into it. Decided to show in his undies today which detracted slightly, despite his lack of jacket he presented very well!

1st: 1548 BRYANS Miss M L Marilouvale's Storm Rider

Just out of puppy, a really well marked black and tan lad with handsome head properties, a dark eye and gorgeous expression. Arched neck into a moderate shoulder, good feet and front, a strong topline and a moderate rear put to good use, topped with a high set tail. Lacking in harsh top coat today to correctly dress his outline. His quality when viewed from the front is beautiful, would very much like to see him again in full harsh coat. Moved very well and a born showman.

1st: 1580 NIXON Miss L A Hokkaidi Kioshi Kei

A strong male with good head proportions, a dark oblique eye which ideally could be a bit less bold. Neat ears, plump cheeks, a crested neck into a moderate shoulder, straight front of decent width propped up by good feet. Nice topline, a moderate rear put to good use. Topped with a lovely high set tail not too tightly carried. He moved well in all directions and was very well handled

2nd: 1565 FROOME Mrs M & Mr C Jiltrain Jack Tar Is Lykafoxx

Sesame lad with a head of good proportions and nice dark oblique eye giving a nice expression, ears were well set on and carried though could be neater in size. A crested neck into a decent shoulder, nice feet but tends to sink into the pastern when he is not focussed which has an affect on the balance of his outline. A moderate rear used to good effect and a high set, tightly carried tail.

1st: 1562 DUNHILL HALL Miss M S Kaga No Shouji Go Sapporo Kagasou Vormund (Imp)

Gorgeous, well marked red lad of nice size, maturing at a nice steady pace. Head proportions are very good, his dark eyes are set really well and give an exquisite expression. Plump cheeks, neat ears set on and carried well. A proud crested neck leading to a moderate shoulder, tight feet propping up good bone and a nice width of front. Good topline and underline with strong coupling leading to a moderate rear which he used to great effect. A high set, not too tightly carried tail and well textured coat dressed the outline just right to give a beautiful balance. Everything in perfect proportion without any exaggeration. He moved very well coming, going and in profile. He stops four square without any encouragement at all and literally didn’t put a foot wrong. The rapport with his handler means he gives his all and 100% of the time, which is no mean feat for a Shiba. Heading a nice class he somehow stepped his showmanship up a gear in the challenge to demand the CC.

2nd: 1578 MCKINNON Mrs J Jordanelles Breaking Dawn At Cherkhan JW Sh.CM

Another beautiful red who is well marked and of good size. Dark, well set eyes, neat ears set on and carried well. A crested neck into good shoulders and front, propped up by tight feet and good bone. Good topline, a moderate rear used to nice effect, topped by a high set well carried tail. Moved well in all directions well handled and presented.

Another beautiful well marked red lad of nice size. Head proportions are correct, his dark eyes are set really well and give a lovely expression. Plump cheeks, neat ears set on and carried well. A proud crested neck leading to a moderate shoulder, tight feet propping up good bone and a nice width of front. Good topline and underline with strong loin leading to a moderate rear which he used to great effect. A high set tail dressed the outline just right to give a beautiful balance. He moved very well coming, going and in profile. He stops four square without any assistance. He is well marked and has good texture to his jacket. He caused me much hassle in the line up but had to settle for the RDCC when his stable mate cranked it up a notch.

Really pretty 6 month old baby of nice size with super head proportions, a dark oblique set eye. Neat ears, plump cheeks, a crested neck into a moderate shoulder, straight front of decent width propped up by good feet. Nice topline, a moderate rear put to good use. Topped with a lovely high set tail not too tightly carried. She moved well in all directions and was very well handled. Carrying a shade too much weight today which affected her balance of outline moreso in the challenge.

2nd: 1551 BRYANS Miss M L Marilouvales Hachi

A 6 month old very raw baby showing in her bikini. Head is developing in good proportions, she has a dark eye of good shape and set. A moderate shoulder and adequate width of front propped up on good feet. A high set tail not carried too tightly. She had a blast on the move, and did settle to go well in all directions.

1st: 1560 DUNHILL Mrs E Vormund Famous Last Words

Gorgeous, well marked red lass of nice size, maturing at a beautiful rate. Head proportions are bang on, her dark eyes are set really well and give a expression that could melt stone. Plump cheeks, really neat ears which are set on and carried well. A proud crested neck leading to a moderate shoulder, lovely tight feet propping up good bone and a nice width of front. Good topline and underline with strong coupling leading to a moderate rear which she truly used to great effect. A high set, not too tightly carried tail and correct textured coat dressing a wonderful balanced outline. She comes into her own on the move, and is in good hard condition all through, loved her coming, going and in profile. She cannot help but stop four square and literally didn’t put a foot wrong at any given point. She has tremendous rapport with her handler and never stops showing for a split second. Heading my strongest class today she demanded no less that the CC in the challenge. She stole the BOB from under the males nose when she found yet another level to her showmanship. Some dogs are just born with a sense of greatness about themselves, and I believe she has that. BOB

2nd: 1585 SHUTT Mr & Mrs M Jaidev,s Conspiacy Theory With Tapena

Another well marked red lass who is of a nice size and maturing so very nicely. Head proportions are just right, a dark oblique eye that captivates in expression, neat well placed ears and plump cheeks. Her head really is quite exquisite. She has a crested neck and moderate shoulder, good width of front on ample bone propped up by good feet. Nice topline and strong coupling to a moderate rear which she used to great effect. Crowned with a high set tail not too tightly carried. Her handler could get oh so much more out of her, despite this, she pushed very hard to win this class on her attributes alone. I had to call her back into the ring after the BCC was given because I knew how close a call it had been in the class, and I am glad I did as she shone so brightly and I was thrilled to award her the RBCC
