Breed: Working Group

Working Group It was a great honour to be invited back to Peterborough to judge the Working Group on this beautiful Summers day. A full compliment paraded for my inspection and all bar one coped admirably with the warm conditions. Faced with a plethora of top quality dogs I had my work cut out arriving at a short list and I could have called in many more than the nine that I arrived at, namely, BMD, Boxer, Bullmastiff, Canadian Eskimo, Mastiff, Newfoundland, Rottweiler, St Bernard and Tibetan Mastiff. After a final run off I felt the Rottweiler stood away for Group 1, Dunhill & Dunhill-Halls Ch Cammcastle’s Quarterback Fantasa, I found him to be really well proportioned enabling such an easy and meaningful gait when viewed from any direction, his head is all male yet clean without a hint of exaggeration and his eye alert to everything around him, set on a powerful neck but again nothing overstated and completing the package. Into Group 2 came the Newfoundland, Chapmans Ch Merrybear D’Artagnan, one I have admired in groups before and thought him in top form, possibly not carrying quite so much coat today which suited him and gave an even better overall balanced picture, put in a great performance and pushed hard for the top spot. Group 3 went to the ultra feminine fawn Bullmastiff, Lindleys Ch Hyerdunscar The Big Tease, carries a classical head with all its features beautifully laid out to give that desired forbidding expression, carried on an excellent front assembly with gun barrel straight forelimbs down to best of tight feet, hindquarters are in suitable harmony which is confirmed in her accurate easy action. Completing the line-up as Group 4 was the striking BMD, Bird & Bridges Ch Kernow Something, very typical of his breed with width to his flat skull and well placed eye giving soft expression, powerful neck and shoulder, firm body, well muscled, steady mover. My thanks to the Officers of the Society for their kind invitation. Rodney Oldham (Judge)
