Southern Counties Canine Association

Breed: Beagle

Southern Counties Canine Association

1st June 2018

Beagles

Many thanks to the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge the breed. Thanks to my excellent stewards but especially the exhibitors for their sportsmanship in accepting my placements.

For me, the beagle should be just as in the breed standard, "A merry hound"  and this is  exactly what the Beagle should convey in his demeaner, his attitude, the way he looks at you and goes about his business. Confident and well mannered, he should never be aggressive or rowdy but alert and interested in his surroundings, essentially full of life and happy.  All coupled with a soft expression and correct construction.

Minor Puppy – Dog (2)

1st  DEACONFIELD KINGCRAFT (MISS D G TAYLOR)

Lovely boy. Good head and eye, good reach of neck into correct shoulder. Standing and on the move, he kept the correct topline. Very much a baby but sound throughout and showy.

2nd  FALLOWFIELD TREMENDOUS (MRS C LEWIS)

Compact and very close up to winner. On the day, not quite the topline of #1 but this will change as he is very young. Nice head good firm front and nicely angulated.

Puppy – Dog (6)

Very strong class

1st  EARDLEY ALEC TRICITY (MESSRS T N & S A JONES & JEPSON)

A stunning puppy, lovely head and soft expression with a kind eye onto a lovely arched neck. Short coupled good firm straight front. Sound throughout and moved with drive and gusto.

2nd  EVALUX BEATLE GEORGE FOR ROSSUT (MISS P A SUTTON)

Another excellent example of the breed. Lovely head free from frown, superb outline and so well made. Tight feet and in good condition. Scored in body shape and movement. #1 just had the very slight edge with his outlook.

3rd  DAVRICARD HARLEQUIN (MR D R CRAIG)

Junior – Dog (3,1)

1st  DIALYNNE PITCH PERFECT (MISS M SPAVIN)

Upstanding male, liked his head and expression. Well made on good legs and feet. Excelled in body and good topline which he retained on the move. Moved well in profile and fore and aft.

2nd  VIRACOCHA HOT DIGGITY DAWG (MRS C AYRES-COUSINS)

Nice boy of merit, well boned and decent head shape , good angulation but not quite the strength of front or tail carriage of winner

Yearling – Dog (3)

1st  HUNTSHILL TORNADO JW (Messrs MITCHELL & WRIGHT)

Very pleasing in profile although a  little heavy in forequarters for me. Short coupled and with correct bone. Nice head and well set ears. Moved well .

2nd  DUFOSEE YARDBIRD AT CANOWINDRA (MRS V F & MRS L BRADLEY & RICHMOND)

A quality male with a very soft expression. Good neck length and lovely topline and tail carriage. Decent proportions but on the day failed in front action

3rd  LINKENLEES LUCAS (MS C & MS D ROBERTS & SPEARING)

Graduate – Dog (3,1)

1st  WENANNOU SCIROCCO (MR M WENMAN)

Well-made male and in excellent hard condition. Lovely outline, typical head with soft expression framed by correctly hung leathers, well laid shoulders, good depth of chest and spring of rib , excellent bone and well turned stifles, strong quarters and moved soundly and with drive. Res DCC

Post Graduate – Dog (2)

1st  FALLOWFIELD CONNER (MRS C LEWIS)

Well balanced with clean outline, good head and with kind expression, good reach of neck which flows into his shoulders. Well sprung ribs, well angulated quarters which helped him move soundly and with drive.

2nd  LINKENLEES LUCAS (MS C & MS D ROBERTS & SPEARING)

Nice looking dog in profile with a decent topline and spring of rib. However, for me,  I found his head too heavy and  rather weak in forequarters.

Limit – Dog (3,0)

1st  EARDLEY LES CANOODLE (MESSRS T N & S A JONES & JEPSON).

For me he stood out as soon as he came into the ring. Classic outline, well constructed and strongly made male with a fantastic nature and disposition. Lovely compact body and standing fore square from his straight form front , short pasterns , tight feet and lovely head and expression with decent ear set and dark eyes. Lovely reach of neck, nicely arched into well placed shoulders. Firm topline and good stern, well angulated hindquarters and moved with drive. Delighted to award him the CC & BOB. He was later Hound Group 3 – well done.
