Judge Standard Wire Haired Dachshunds.
My first time awarding CC’s in Dachshunds and I didn’t find it an easy task. I would think this was a fairly representative entry of the breed as it stands at the moment. The overriding impression I came away with was of two fairly distinct types. In general there is the shorter bodied cobbier type, as against the houndier type. The cobbier ones have a capacious (in most cases) oval ribcage which doesn’t go as far bac kas I would wish but most importantly , in my view, the sternum is fairly short too giving very little bone upon which to ‘rest’ when gone to ground. The houndier types , on the other hand, have ribcages which tend to go further back and have proportionate sternum bones, however the capacity in ribcage is lacking. Given that the ribcage must have heart and lung room we must not forget it is also the protection of these organs that is paramount enabling the form follows function of the breed. It was in this area that the majority of ‘judging compromises’ had to be made on the day. Almost all heads were ‘very acceptable’ to ‘good’, just two exhibits being a little weak in strength of jaw. Coats and preparation were all over the place. I certainly know it is not easy to achieve the ‘smooth’ look but the wire coat goes from tip of nose to tip of tail, don’t just concentrate on the headpiece and ‘make do’ with the rest. Movement , on the whole. Was fair to good.
